Weaving And Scheming: Adventures On Planet Mosuo, Melissa Judson
Weaving And Scheming: Adventures On Planet Mosuo, Melissa Judson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This past month, not only did I learn to weave fabric, but also I learned to weave lies about why I couldn’t eat any more chicken feet, weave tales about American culture and weave clouds of smoke to mask my inability to drink copious amounts of alcohol, though nearly all of my handiwork was shoddily crafted. I studied weaving in a small Mosuo village about an hour outside of Yongning, on the borders of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Although the Chinese government classifies the Mosuo as a part of the Naxi minority people, they have many of their own distinctly …
Cool Head, Warm Heart: Governance And The Mission Of Microfinance In The Case Of Mc2 Micro-Banks, Cameroon, Claire Ruffing
Cool Head, Warm Heart: Governance And The Mission Of Microfinance In The Case Of Mc2 Micro-Banks, Cameroon, Claire Ruffing
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The concept of a cool head and a warm heart co-existing is a Buddhist principle which attempts to illustrate compassion and pragmatism as mutually compatible, not mutually exclusive. Without intelligent management, compassion is lost in its ineffectiveness, and without compassion, intelligence is purposeless reason. This equilibrium is exactly the vision of microfinance that drives this paper: an important social and moral idea that is nevertheless affected by the world and environment in which it operates. By examining the governance mechanisms affecting microfinance in Cameroon, namely the Ministry of Finance and the management structure of the firms themselves, an idea emerges …

This is Old Dominion University's 10th annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Strategic Supply Function Competition With Private Information, Xavier Vives
Strategic Supply Function Competition With Private Information, Xavier Vives
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A finite number of sellers ( n ) compete in schedules to supply an elastic demand. The costs of the sellers have uncertain common and private value components and there is no exogenous noise in the system. A Bayesian supply function equilibrium is characterized; the equilibrium is privately revealing and the incentives to acquire information are preserved. Price-cost margins and bid shading are affected by the parameters of the information structure: supply functions are steeper with more noise in the private signals or more correlation among the costs parameters. In fact, for large values of noise or correlation supply functions …
Default Penalty As A Disciplinary And Selection Mechanism In Presence Of Multiple Equilibria, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder
Default Penalty As A Disciplinary And Selection Mechanism In Presence Of Multiple Equilibria, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Closed exchange and production-and-exchange economies may have multiple equilibria, a fact that is usually ignored in macroeconomic models. Our basic argument is that default and bankruptcy laws are required to prevent strategic default, and these laws can also serve to provide the conditions for uniqueness. In this paper we report experimental evidence on the effectiveness of this approach to resolving multiplicity: society can assign default penalties on fiat money so the economy selects one of the equilibria. Our data show that the choice of default penalty takes the economy to the neighborhood of the chosen equilibrium. The theory and evidence …
Identification Of A Heterogeneous Generalized Regression Model With Group Effects, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile
Identification Of A Heterogeneous Generalized Regression Model With Group Effects, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider identification in a “generalized regression model” (Han, 1987) for panel settings in which each observation can be associated with a “group” whose members are subject to a common unobserved shock. Common examples of groups include markets, schools or cities. The model is fully nonparametric and allows for the endogeneity of group-specific observables, which might include prices, policies, and/or treatments. The model features heterogeneous responses to observables and unobservables, and arbitrary heteroskedasticity. We provide sufficient conditions for full identification of the model, as well as weaker conditions sufficient for identification of the latent group effects and the distribution of …
Uniform Topologies On Types, Yi-Chun Chen, Alfredo Di Tillio, Eduardo Faingold, Siyang Xiong
Uniform Topologies On Types, Yi-Chun Chen, Alfredo Di Tillio, Eduardo Faingold, Siyang Xiong
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study the robustness of interim correlated rationalizability to perturbations of higher-order beliefs. We introduce a new metric topology on the universal type space, called uniform weak topology, under which two types are close if they have similar first-order beliefs, attach similar probabilities to other players having similar first-order beliefs, and so on, where the degree of similarity is uniform over the levels of the belief hierarchy. This topology generalizes the now classic notion of proximity to common knowledge based on common p-beliefs (Monderer and Samet (1989)). We show that convergence in the uniform weak topology implies convergence in the …

Human Rights & Human Welfare
I read the “Women’s Crusade” article that forms the centrepiece of this month’s roundtable with initial interest, gradually turning to a vague sense of disquiet spiced with occasional disbelief. After a few more readings, I tried highlighting the passages that bothered me and stringing them together. Countries “riven by fundamentalism”— that’s presumably the Islamic variety, rather than the Christian variant which holds such sway in the US. The suggestion that “everyone from the World Bank to the US [...] Chiefs of Staff to [...] CARE” now thinks that women are the answer to global extremism hides too many questionable assumptions …

A Service Choice Model For Optimizing Taxi Service Delivery, Shih-Fen Cheng, Xin Qu
A Service Choice Model For Optimizing Taxi Service Delivery, Shih-Fen Cheng, Xin Qu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Taxi service has undergone radical revamp in recent years. In particular, significant investments in communication system and GPS devices have improved quality of taxi services through better dispatches. In this paper, we propose to leverage on such infrastructure and build a service choice model that helps individual drivers in deciding whether to serve a specific taxi stand or not. We demonstrate the value of our model by applying it to a real-world scenario. We also highlight interesting new potential approaches that could significantly improve the quality of taxi services.

The article informs that the Georgia Public Library Services (GPLS) has created a Twitter account, Georgialibs. According to GPLS Webmaster Darin Givens, the GPLS Twitter feed will be useful communications tool for getting brief reminders about upcoming library events, conferences and workshops. Given adds that it will also be used for linking public library news items.
