The Landscape Within: Shanghai Photography By Howard French

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Howard French, former Shanghai bureau chief for the New York Times, has recently posted a new collection of black-and-white photographs on his website. The photo gallery, entitled “Disappearing Shanghai Part Two: The Landscape Within,” is accompanied by an essay written by French. Below, an excerpt from “The Landscape Within” and a sample of French’s photography to whet your appetite:

As many times as I have tread those asphalt streets, my mission this summer was altogether different from my photographic explorations of the past. It was inspired, in part, by a suggestion from a friend, the photographer Danny Lyon, that sounded …

Three Generations

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Today we are debuting a new feature. China Beat will be occasionally running a photo with a short gloss from one of our contributors. Today, we feature a photo from one of the regular contributors to this new feature, Alec Ash of Six.

Three generations: Confucius, welcoming visitors to his temple in Beijing; a sweeper, most likely taught to hate everything Confucian when he was young; and a little girl, with other things on her mind. Of them all, it’s the girl who will have the biggest impact on China’s future.

Price Discovery In Nebraska Cash Cattle Markets, Matthew Stockton, Roger Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Over three quarters of a million head of cattle were sold in livestock auction markets in or near the Nebraska Sandhills during the 2008 market year. These markets range from as far south as McCook, as far north as Valentine, as far west as Ogallala and as far east as Columbus. Each sale is associated with many different expectations by both buyers and sellers. Those expectations engage these stakeholders in a study of the markets. One of the most important questions that many of these market participants want to know the answer to is, “What are the key factors driving …

Of Facebook, Twitter And Social Networking Sites, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

For those who have read even one of my musings, it will come as no surprise that I find Facebook, Twitter, social networking sites (SNS), and the rest of Webology less than inspiring. If you had read nothing other than the screed I blathered about Google a few columns back, you’d know that I find all this talk about the Web replacing libraries more than a little silly; I find it downright idiotic. Still, one must keep an open mind.

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Fall is in the air-football, back-to-school activities, pumpkins, and the annual Reference Books Bulletin "Encyclopedia Update." This year we get to highlight a new encyclopedia. Gale, part of Cengage Learning, acquired HighBeam Research in December 2008, and with that acquisition, the ownership of a fabulous URL EncycLopedia.com, a free resource with more than half a million entries on a variety of topics. The best part? The information is from vetted reference sources. In fact, more than 200 dictionaries and encyclopedias are used to verify content on the site, with many more to follow. This is great news for librarians and …

Searching for a library job can be a life-changing ordeal, but try not to let that bother you. The scars that it will leave on your psyche are likely to heal in time. When I was starting the job search process, I found that the professional literature had a lot to say about writing good cover letters and developing solid interview skills but not a lot of information about what searching for a job was really like on a daily basis. Hopefully, after reading this article, you have a little better sense of what to expect during your search, pick …

Home Care Workers: Keeping Granite Staters In Their Homes As They Age, Kristin Smith Sep 2009

Home Care Workers: Keeping Granite Staters In Their Homes As They Age, Kristin Smith

Carsey School of Public Policy

Using data from the New Hampshire Direct Care Workforce Survey, this brief shows that New Hampshire's demand for home-based care workers outpaces supply because its population is aging at a faster rate than the average. These workers play a critical role and face many challenges, including low pay, little or no paid time off, and lack of access to health insurance.
