The Experience Of Social Workers Who Use Thought Field Therapy Or Emotional Freedom Technique, Tara Nicotra Aug 2009

The Experience Of Social Workers Who Use Thought Field Therapy Or Emotional Freedom Technique, Tara Nicotra

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis explores social workers' experiences with their use of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) with their clients. These techniques, which are also known as tapping, involve tapping one's own fingers in a specific sequence on specific points on the body while tuning into undesired feelings in an effort to eliminate feelings of distress. For this study, I conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve clinical social workers. The study participants had been practicing either EFT or TFT for an average of eight years, with three years being the least amount of time that a participant had been …

Critical Foundations: Providing Australia’S 21st Century Infrastructure, Michael Regan Aug 2009

Critical Foundations: Providing Australia’S 21st Century Infrastructure, Michael Regan

Michael Regan

Extract:

Infrastructure is undoubtedly the least understood of the major asset classes in Australia. A tradition of public ownership and operation, its status as a public good and a lack of information about its investment characteristics in both public and private hands has contributed to limited recognition of its role in national and regional economies. However, this situation is changing. A coincidence of political, economic and financial events in the lead up to the worldwide economic recession of the late 1980s and Australia's microeconomic reforms of the 1990s b[r]ought into sharper focus the central role that infrastructure plays in both …

Temporal Aggregation, Cointegration And Causality Inference, Gulasekaran Rajaguru, Tilak Abeysinghe Aug 2009

Temporal Aggregation, Cointegration And Causality Inference, Gulasekaran Rajaguru, Tilak Abeysinghe

Gulasekaran Rajaguru

Temporal aggregation creates contemporaneous correlations, alters dynamic links and may distort causality inference. Since cointegration is invariant to temporal aggregation and implies Granger causality this paper presents a sign rule for causal inference and contemporaneous conditioning in regression models.

Reordering Diplomatic Theory For The Twenty-First Century: A Tripartite Approach, Stuart Murray Aug 2009

Reordering Diplomatic Theory For The Twenty-First Century: A Tripartite Approach, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

The central aim of this thesis is to deconstruct and reconstruct the dominant theoretical perceptions of diplomacy, by reworking radically existing theories of diplomacy. This thesis achieves reconceptualisation of diplomatic theory by critiquing the thoughts and ideas of theorists postulating on modern diplomacy. Consequently, this thesis is concerned (largely) with the theoretical terrain of diplomacy studies. The purpose of this intended deconstruction and reconstruction is to introduce and construct three lucid types of diplomatic theory. These three types or categories introduced in this thesis are Traditional, Nascent and Innovative Diplomatic Theory. By categorising these three distinct types of theories, it …

Firm Performance And Macro-Economic Variables, Ray Mcnamara, Keith Duncan Aug 2009

Firm Performance And Macro-Economic Variables, Ray Mcnamara, Keith Duncan

Ray McNamara

The purpose of this research is to predict the fundamental performance of a firm as measured by the rate of return on assets (ROA). The paper presents a model relating ROA to prior year ROA and to the level of activity in the economy. A principal components' analysis of thirty-three economic indicators was used. The variables used were drawn from the main theories/perspectives on macro economic behaviour. These were the Leading and Coincident Indicators perspective, Supply or Cost-Push Theories, Monetary Economics, and Savings-Investment theories. Three factors emerged and were labelled as an Output Factor, Interest Factor, and a Corporate Activity …

I received a note on the H-Asia listserv last week from the Asian Studies WWW Monitor (which provides regular summaries of online teaching resources on Asia). The note flagged a fabulous archive of photographs of daily life taken by Wellesley Political Science Professor William A. Joseph in 1972. Below, a few images from this intriguing resource.

Free To Act Any Way He Wanted : Male Gender Identity And Professional Wrestling, Daniel Sarnat Millman Aug 2009

Free To Act Any Way He Wanted : Male Gender Identity And Professional Wrestling, Daniel Sarnat Millman

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explores professional wrestling as a performance of masculinity. After briefly outlining what American professional wrestling is, and why its study is highly relevant to the field of social work, this study considers how professional wrestling may meet needs of its male fans related to their experiences of gender identity development. This study draws on Sharon Mazer's work of conceptualizing professional wrestling as a performance of masculinity. It draws on a body of feminist, postmodern, psychoanalytic theory which critiques the notion of gender as a binary, essential, and biologically determined category, and asserts that each person's development of …

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski Aug 2009

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

A mixed-methods evaluation of a racism training examined whether education about a social identity development model predicated on critical race theory influenced white clinicians' attitudes regarding white privilege, level of positive self-regard, and attempted to explore how participants processed their social identity development in a follow up questionnaire. Fourteen self-identifying white clinicians completed pre and post surveys the day of a two and half hour work-shop based training. Five of those participants went on to complete the final survey including qualitative questions regarding their identity development. White privilege attitudes were measured by the White Privilege Attitudes Scale (WPAS; Pinterits, Poteat …

Therapist As Client : Revisiting The Idea Of Clinicians In Therapy, Laura Elisabeth Mowrey Aug 2009

Therapist As Client : Revisiting The Idea Of Clinicians In Therapy, Laura Elisabeth Mowrey

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The subject of graduate students undergoing their own therapeutic process in order to become more competent clinicians is a subject of much debate in the literature. There is evidence to suggest both benefits and risks to clinicians undergoing the therapeutic process. This study was undertaken to further explore how clinicians perceive their own mental health, if they have been in therapy previously, found it to be helpful, or unhelpful, and if they think that personal therapy should be a requirement for graduate students who are studying to be clinicians. This was a mixed methods study, which was exploratory in nature. …

Supporting Father Involvement Project : From Research To Action : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At University Of California, Berkeley, Yale University Child Study Center And Smith College School For Social Work, Katherine Lindsay Mcdonnell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine the most effective dissemination strategies used by the Supporting Father Involvement's (SFI) Project Directors to encourage Partner Agencies to adopt father friendliness and the SFI curriculum into their family resource centers (FRC) in five pilot California counties. This qualitative study aims to inform SFI's investigators about what works in dissemination approaches for a social service intervention, and what hinders those efforts. Sponsored by the California Office for Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP), the Supporting Father Involvement Project (SFI) is the first randomized clinical trial demonstrating that strengthening the couple as parents and partners benefits the …

Having Our Say : Stressors And Readjustment Issues Of Veterans Of The Wars In Iraq And Afghanistan From The Perspective Of Loved Ones, Karen Davis Mcginty Aug 2009

Having Our Say : Stressors And Readjustment Issues Of Veterans Of The Wars In Iraq And Afghanistan From The Perspective Of Loved Ones, Karen Davis Mcginty

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores the stressors and readjustment issues experienced by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from the perspective of loved ones. A review of the literature on veterans' experiences is vast; however there is little literature that discusses the stressors from the perspective of a loved one. This study examines the "common" post-combat stressors, psychosocial issues, and mental illnesses impacting combat veterans in the words and observations of those closest to them. Twelve loved ones of veterans of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan participated in this study, providing narrative data based on their veterans' …

Lovers Without Borders : Self-Reflections On The Relationships Of Cross-National And Cross-Cultural Couples Of Korean Women Partnered With North American Non-Asian Men, Omer Astar Mendelson Aug 2009

Lovers Without Borders : Self-Reflections On The Relationships Of Cross-National And Cross-Cultural Couples Of Korean Women Partnered With North American Non-Asian Men, Omer Astar Mendelson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how couples, composed of a Korean woman and a non-Asian North American man, who are in long-term relationship, perceive the challenges and benefits of their relationship, and to gain an understanding of how they negotiate, interweave and construct their relationship. Six intermarried couples, where the female partner had been born and was raised primarily in Korea, and the male partner came from the United States were interviewed. Special emphasis was placed on how the woman's experiences of migration, including loss and adaptation to a new culture, have affected her and have …

Racial And Ethnocultural Considerations In The Treatment Of Combat Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder With Servicemembers And Veterans Of Color, Nada Michael Aug 2009

Racial And Ethnocultural Considerations In The Treatment Of Combat Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder With Servicemembers And Veterans Of Color, Nada Michael

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Research from past wars has shown that veterans of color have significantly higher rates of PTSD than their white counterparts and a higher prevalence over their lifetime. Studies have sought to explain these differences and have found that while there are perhaps no racial genetic predispositions to the development of PTSD, ethno-cultural factors which are often associated with race play a significant role in the etiology and treatment of PTSD and therefore are important to consider when working with this population. This purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which clinicians who work with servicemembers and veterans …

Better City, Better Life, Anna Greenspan Aug 2009

Better City, Better Life, Anna Greenspan

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Since in Shanghai Expo preparation is now ubiquitous, and because I share China’s love of numbered lists, here are my top 8 suggestions for how Shanghai could implement its promise–now posted everywhere–of a ‘better city, better life.’

I’ve deliberately not included things that are a) already underway (e.g. more subway stops), b) up to the whim of a single entrepreneur (e.g. a decent bagel shop) and c) too obviously political (e.g. a more open media).

As those of us who love the city know, there is much that Shanghai–with its safe, pedestrian friendly, tree lined streets and spectacular skyline–gets right. …

Indonesia Diagnosis Related Groups, Ronnie Rivany Aug 2009

Indonesia Diagnosis Related Groups, Ronnie Rivany

Kesmas
