Marketing Japanese Products In The Context Of Chinese Nationalism, Hongmei Li
Marketing Japanese Products In The Context Of Chinese Nationalism, Hongmei Li
Hongmei Li
This paper examines the rise of consumer nationalism in China through an in-depth analysis of two recent controversial Japanese ad campaigns. I situate the analysis in the sociopolitical and cultural contexts of contemporary China. I argue that Japanese producers shoulder a particular burden of history as expressed in consumer nationalism, which is a combination of the production and reproduction of Japanese imperial history, the construction of Chinese identity, the expression of dissatisfaction toward the Chinese government and consumerist ethos in the context of globalization. The Internet has become a crucial space that organizes Chinese consumer nationalism and enables consumers to …
Drivers Of Agricultural Diversification In India, Haryana, And The Greenbelt Farms Of India, Amarnath Tripathi, Brajesh Jha
Drivers Of Agricultural Diversification In India, Haryana, And The Greenbelt Farms Of India, Amarnath Tripathi, Brajesh Jha
amarnath tripathi
The present study discusses factors responsible for agricultural diversification at different levels: country (India), state (Haryana) and farms of Kurukshetra district in Haryana. The study regressed alternate measures of diversification namely, the Simpson index and concentration of non-food crops, on several possible factors such as income, land distribution, irrigation intensity, institutional credit, road density, urbanization and market penetration. The regression analysis suggests that increased road density, urbanization encourages commercialization of agriculture and with commercialization, farms in a region are increasingly specialized under certain crops and crop-groups as per the resource, infrastructure and institutions of the region.

The Homo Floresiensis Controversy, Robert Cribb
The Homo Floresiensis Controversy, Robert Cribb
Robert Cribb
The 2004 announcement of the discovery of a new species of hominin in the form of sub-fossil remains from Liang Bua cave in Flores aroused immediate excitement and controversy. The discovery attracted sceptical attention from dissenting palaeontologists. The sometimes acrimonious debate addressed the relative importance of apparently archaic and apparently modern features of the remains.
The Criminal Investigator, Terry Goldsworthy
The Criminal Investigator, Terry Goldsworthy
Terry Goldsworthy
Extract:
The words of Sherlock Holmes illustrate that it is the attention to detail that makes for a successful investigator. The investigator is a story teller, charged with telling the story of the victim in such a way that it is impervious to criticism or doubt. Many cogs make up the machinery of the justice system, yet the most important is the investigator, without whom, many crimes would go unsolved.
Obstacles To Registering: Necessity Vs. Opportunity Entrepreneurs, Mohammad Amin
Obstacles To Registering: Necessity Vs. Opportunity Entrepreneurs, Mohammad Amin
Mohammad Amin
Using a new dataset on informal or unregistered firms in three African countries, this paper identifies the type of firms or entrepreneurs that experience greater obstacles to registering. We find important differences between necessity and opportunity entrepreneurs. Averaged over six different obstacles, the severity of obstacles to registering is much higher for necessity compared with opportunity entrepreneurs. This finding appears to be driven by important obstacles including taxes that registered businesses have to pay, registration fees and information required to complete registration procedures. We argue that our results have important policy implications.

Clusters And Strategy In Regional Economic Development, Edward Feser
Clusters And Strategy In Regional Economic Development, Edward Feser
Edward J Feser
Many economic development practitioners view cluster theory and analysis as constituting a general approach to strategy making in economic development, which may lead them to prioritize policy and planning interventions that cannot address the actual development challenges in their cities and regions. This paper discusses the distinction between strategy formation and strategic planning, where the latter is the programming of development strategies that are identified through a blend of experience, intuition, and analysis. Cluster theories and analytical tools can provide useful informational inputs into a strategy making effort and they can also be helpful for programming specific interventions (i.e., strategic …

That Could Be Me: The New Voices Of Poverty In Idaho, Stephanie Witt, Lisa Wennstrom, Carole Nemnich
Research and Reports
In fall of 2009, Boise State University Radio aired a series of stories highlighting the impacts of the changing economy on ordinary Idahoans. The stories were part of a larger project funded in part by the National Center for Media Engagement. The project culminated in a community roundtable held in September of 2009 at which advocates and policy makers discussed the stories, the larger context of poverty here in Idaho, and made policy recommendations. The Public Policy Center at Boise State University was contracted by Boise State Radio to prepare this short white paper. The paper is divided into three …

The Impact Of Third Places On Community Quality Of Life, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Cheryl Campanella Bracken, Guowei Jian, Mary F. Casey
Communication Faculty Publications
Older cities struggling with issues of survival focus on jobs and the economy, but competition requires all cities to pay attention to the quality of life that attracts residents. Creating such an inviting environment includes “third places” that foster community and communication among people outside of home and work, yet we have little empirical evidence that speaks to the subject, or their importance for a community’s quality of life. Here we report on a national U.S. survey that asked people to identify such places in their community, producing a wide variety of “third places” that ranged from the most popular …

NAGPRA (lovely acronym) is a federal law, passed in 1989, that requires agencies receiving federal support to allow federally recognized tribes to obtain “culturally affiliated” Native American human remains and artifacts - in other words, to reclaim bones, body parts, and burial objects from museums, research organizations, and other current owners. [...] decisions will be made on the basis of religious belief, not a showing of fact.
Neural Replay : A Possible Mechanism For Differing Rehersal Strategies Across Parity, Cassie Brooke Jones
Neural Replay : A Possible Mechanism For Differing Rehersal Strategies Across Parity, Cassie Brooke Jones
Master's Theses
All mammalian females undergo behavioral and neurological changes during pregnancy and motherhood. Many of these changes lead to an enhanced ability to be an effective mother including: increased memory, foraging behaviors, and boldness. Here, we examined the differences in rehearsal strategies between mother and virgin rats. Stops made by rats when exploring their environment have been found to result in reverse replay activity in the hippocampus (Foster & Wilson, 2006). Reverse replay is sequential replay that occurs in the hippocampus immediately after a spatial experience; this replay/activation is in reversed order of the initial spatial episode (Foster & Wilson, 2006). …

Architecture Senior Theses
The identity associate with the inhabitants of the "Bidonvilles" of Haiti is arguably nonexistent aside from its connection to the impoverished conditions of the Haitian slum/shantytown. This thesis contends that with the insertion of a reformative intervention in the heart of the community promoting a conducive and educational environment while overlaying a currently absent infrastructure, will help in creating a positive inner growth within the informal typology. More specifically architecture will act as a form of "pride of place," enticing interaction through the direction connection to culture.
Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst
Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
It has been well established in the anthropological literature that reciprocity, in its various cultural forms, is simultaneously produced by and productive of social relationships; it both comments upon social relationships and plays a role in creating them. However, this has generally been demonstrated using positive forms of reciprocity. In this paper I examine how theft, as a form of negative reciprocity, fit with a wider set of positive reciprocal obligations among the Tacana in northeastern Bolivia in 2001-2002. Theft, I argue, was part of a coherent cultural system in which a material basis, social norms, and values and beliefs …
