Efficiency Of Financial Markets And Algorithmic Complexity, Ricardo Giglio, Sergio Da Silva, Iram Gleria, Adhemar Ranciaro, Raul Matsushita, Annibal Figueiredo

Sergio Da Silva

In this work we are interested in the concept of market efficiency and its relationship with the algorithmic complexity theory. We employ a methodology based on the Lempel-Ziv index to analyze the relative efficiency of high-frequency data coming from the Brazilian stock market.

Does Foreign Aid Promote Growth? Exploring The Role Of Financial Liberalization, James B. Ang Dec 2009

Does Foreign Aid Promote Growth? Exploring The Role Of Financial Liberalization, James B. Ang

James B Ang

This paper examines the impact of foreign aid on the process of economic development in India by controlling for the degree of financial liberalization. A composite index is constructed using the method of principal component analysis to capture the joint influence of various financial sector policies. The results show that while foreign aid exerts a direct negative influence on output expansion, its indirect effect via financial liberalization is positive. Therefore, an important implication of the findings in this paper is that adequate liberalization in the financial system of the host country is a crucial requirement for effective foreign aid. Our …

Normative Dynamics Of Competition Laws, Piyabutr Bunaramrueang Dec 2009

Normative Dynamics Of Competition Laws, Piyabutr Bunaramrueang

piyabutr bunaramrueang

This article aims at providing a review on normative dynamics of competition laws. Although legal norms seem to be very stable, those norms governing economic activities are changing relatively fast. It is therefore an attempt to illustrate dynamic quality of laws by using competition laws as a major example of laws governing economic activities. I would like to discuss mainly over U.S. antitrust laws as the major model of competition laws, perhaps, for all other countries pursuing economic growth of free market. The dynamic quality of U.S. antitrust laws is essentially derived from its legal tradition that invites legal reasoning …

Breast And Cervical Cancer Screening Among Asian American Women And Latinas: Does Race=Ethnicity Matter?, Pa Der Vang, Hee Yun Lee, Melissa Lundquist Dec 2009

Breast And Cervical Cancer Screening Among Asian American Women And Latinas: Does Race=Ethnicity Matter?, Pa Der Vang, Hee Yun Lee, Melissa Lundquist

Pa Der Vang, PhD, MSW, LICSW

Background: Ethnic minorities are frequently considered as one homogeneous group in research, and this trend
is particularly true for Asian Americans. This article seeks to uncover the intragroup differences in cancer
screening behavior among subgroups of Asian American women by disaggregating them into six subgroups.
The subgroups were compared with non-Latina white women to examine differences in breast and cancer
screening rates and relevant factors associated with receiving these screenings.
Methods: Three-year merged data from the 2001, 2003, and 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS)
were used to investigate the subgroup differences. Samples for the current study were restricted to …

Forensic Analysis Of A Playstation 3 Console, Scott Conrad, Greg Dorn, Philip Craiger Dec 2009

Forensic Analysis Of A Playstation 3 Console, Scott Conrad, Greg Dorn, Philip Craiger

J. Philip Craiger, Ph.D.

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a powerful gaming console that supports Internet-related activities, local file storage and the playing of Blu-ray movies. The PS3 also allows users to partition and install a secondary operating system on the hard drive. This “desktop-like” functionality along with the encryption of the primary hard drive containing the gaming software raises significant issues related to the forensic analysis of PS3 systems. This paper discusses the PS3 architecture and behavior, and provides recommendations for conducting forensic investigations of PS3 systems.

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser Dec 2009

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser

pablo rosser

Yolanda Carrion & Pablo Rosser Six wells at Tossal de les Basses in Spain captured a large assemblage of Iberian woodworking debris. The authors’ analysis distinguishes a wide variety of boxes, handles, staves, pegs and joinery made in different and appropriate types of wood, some – like cypress – imported from some distance away. We have here a glimpse of a sophisticated and little known industry of the fourth century BC.

Racial/Ethnic Composition, Social Disorganization, And Offsite Alcohol Availability In San Diego County, California, Michael T. French, Amie L. Nielsen, Terrence D. Hill, Monique N. Hernandez Dec 2009

Racial/Ethnic Composition, Social Disorganization, And Offsite Alcohol Availability In San Diego County, California, Michael T. French, Amie L. Nielsen, Terrence D. Hill, Monique N. Hernandez

Michael T. French

We draw upon social disorganization theory to examine the effects of community characteristics on the distribution of offsite alcohol outlets in San Diego County, California. Of particular interest is whether alcohol availability varies according to neighborhood racial/ethnic composition once measures of social disorganization (socioeconomic disadvantage, residential instability, and racial/ethnic heterogeneity) are controlled. Using data from the 1990 Census and 1993 alcohol license reports, we estimate a series of negative binomial regression models with corrections for spatial autocorrelation. The results show that percent Asian is associated with lower offsite alcohol outlet density. Once socioeconomic disadvantage is controlled, percent Latino is related …

Popularizing Achievement: The Role Of An Hbcu In Supporting Academic Success For Underprepared Black Males, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd Dec 2009

Popularizing Achievement: The Role Of An Hbcu In Supporting Academic Success For Underprepared Black Males, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Both predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are experiencing low academic persistence rates among Black males. While researchers have focused on factors facilitating the retention and persistence for Black males at PWIs, a paucity of contemporary research has focused on the academic and social experiences of Black males at HBCUs. We used in-depth interview methods to investigate the academic and social experiences of 11 Black males, who entered a public HBCU through its remedial or developmental studies program and persisted to graduation. Although several themes emerged from this study, special attention was placed on the …

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel Jul 2009

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel

Alberto Pepe

In the process of scientific research, many information objects are generated, all of which may remain valuable indefinitely. However, artifacts such as instrument data and associated calibration information may have little value in isolation; their meaning is derived from their relationships to each other. Individual artifacts are best represented as components of a life cycle that is specific to a scientific research domain or project. Current cataloging practices do not describe objects at a sufficient level of granularity nor do they offer the globally persistent identifiers necessary to discover and manage scholarly products with World Wide Web standards. The Open …
