Algorithmic Complexity Theory Detects Decreases In The Relative Efficiency Of Stock Markets In The Aftermath Of The 2008 Financial Crisis, Cleiton Taufemback, Ricardo Giglio, Sergio Da Silva

Sergio Da Silva

The relative efficiency of financial markets can be evaluated using algorithmic complexity theory. Using this approach we detect decreases in efficiency rates of the major stocks listed on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.

Gestión Electoral Comparada Y Confianza En Las Elecciones En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Dec 2010

Gestión Electoral Comparada Y Confianza En Las Elecciones En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Hmong Women, Marital Factors, And Mental Health, Pa Der Vang, Matthew Bogenschutz

Pa Der Vang, PhD, MSW, LICSW

#2;Summary: An online survey was completed by Hmong women in the United States
(n¼186). The survey was distributed via listserves and websites frequently used by
Hmong women, and solicited information about marital factors, presence and intensity
of depressive symptoms, and socio-demographic circumstances.
#2;Findings: The findings of this article indicate a significant relationship between marital
abuse and depression among women married as teenagers when compared to nonabused
women who married in adulthood. Excessive worry and feeling like everything
takes great effort were the two most frequently reported indicators of depression
reported by Hmong women in this sample. Additional marital and socio-demographic …

Neither Morality Nor Law: Ritual Propriety As Confucian Civility, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2010

Neither Morality Nor Law: Ritual Propriety As Confucian Civility, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

It is common for recent authors on the topic of “civility” to spend some time sketching
the history of their subject.1 One narrative goes like this: civility emerges in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is part of a larger trend toward disciplining bodily appetites that enables a new kind of cooperation among individuals. Civility interweaves politeness and political respect; it undergirds modern notions of republicanism, civil society, and the public good. In more recent decades—some writers point to World War I as a turning point, but for others, it is the 1960s—civility has declined or at least changed …

Forensic Analysis Of Plug Computers, Scott Conrad, Greg Dorn, Philip Craiger

J. Philip Craiger, Ph.D.

A plug computer is essentially a cross between an embedded computer and a traditional computer, and with many of the same capabilities. However, the architecture of a plug computer makes it difficult to apply commonly used digital forensic methods. This paper describes methods for extracting and analyzing digital evidence. from plug computers. Two popular plug computer models are examined, the SheevaPlug and the Pogoplug

Zizek/Questions/Failing, Nick J. Sciullo Dec 2010

Zizek/Questions/Failing, Nick J. Sciullo

Nick J. Sciullo

In this article I am primarily concerned with presenting Slavoj Žižek3 as a legal theorist. Žižek has been a valuable contributor to critical theory and deserves a place in the pantheon of legal thinkers.

While his diverse writings are often relegated to other disciplines, they also position him as an important contributor to law and public discourse. I seek to illuminate how he mediates and interrogates the law by demonstrating how his scholarship is important to the lives of legal thinkers, questions of success and the law, capitalism, political practice, and terrorism. Because Žižek’s work is interdisciplinary and expansive, this …

Global Trends In Servicisation And Comparative Hrm In Europe, Anton Kramberger Dec 2010

Global Trends In Servicisation And Comparative Hrm In Europe, Anton Kramberger

Anton Kramberger

The chapter focuses on a comparative snapshot of the level of organisational servicisation from an HRM and business performance perspective, using the 2004 Cranet data. Main research question is the following: How is increase in services associated with HRM practices within the EU organisations? Twenty countries are divided into two clusters: fourteen West European countries and six East European countries.

The study finds a clear dual pattern of different effects of servicisation on organisations. With increase in services, Western part already succeeds to include many of the high-road HRM practices, especially in Scandinavia. However, in Eastern part the old efficiency …

Does Having A Dysfunctional Personality Hurt Your Career? Axis Ii Personality Disorders And Labor Market Outcomes, Michael T. French, Johanna Catherine Maclean, Susan L. Ettner

Michael T. French

Despite recent interest in how psychiatric disorders affect work outcomes, little is known about the role of personality disorders (PDs), which are poorly understood yet prevalent (15%) and impairing. We used nationally representative data for 12,457 men and 16,061 women to examine associations of PDs with any employment, full-time employment, chronic unemployment, being fired or laid off, and having trouble with a boss or co-worker. Antisocial, paranoid, and obsessivecompulsive PDs demonstrated the broadest patterns of associations with adverse outcomes. Findings suggest that PDs may have implications for the productivity of co-workers as well as that of the disordered employees themselves.
