Programming Serving The Needs Of Homeless Adults And Families: A Survey To Determine Current Practices In Transitional Housing Programs Within The Interfaith Hospitality Network, Nathan A. Paro

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Over the last decade the rate of homelessness has continued to rise, putting an increased demand on services for the homeless such as transitional living programs. There appears to be little information about the standards of practice within the field of transitional living programs for the homeless. The current study surveyed directors of transitional living programs that serve women and children within the Interfaith Hospitality Network across the country, in order to compile information such as programing offered, services offered, and outcome measures which are used by the programs to determine success. The results of the survey suggested that there …

An Examination Of The Interactive Effects Of Mindfulness And Stress On Negative Health Habits In A Primary Care Population, Christina J. Dichiara

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The overarching goal of this study was to better understand relationships between health habits, stress, and mindfulness. In doing so, this research examined the interaction of mindfulness with responses to stress as it affects negative health habits. There was also a psychometric development study conducted, using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) to test the applicability of the two-factor model of the PHLMS to a primary care population. Data were collected from 198 adult patients in a primary care medical practice. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 89 years old, were 51% female, and 92% Caucasian. For CFA analyses, three fit …

In efforts to address the need for effective treatment, Eli Lilly and Company developed the Solutions for Wellness program. The aim of this study was to examine if the Solutions for Wellness nutritional program was effective in increasing wellness knowledge and increasing healthy lifestyle choices within a small sample of obese individuals with serious mental illnesses. Social Skills And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Barbara Liberi Jan 2012

Social Skills And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Barbara Liberi

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Children on the autistic spectrum display significant social deficits that negatively impact daily functioning and may lead to serious mental health problems. Research on the effectiveness of school based social skills programs and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), specifically children identified with Asperger Disorder (AS) and high functioning Autism (HFA), has yielded limited positive outcomes. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a school based social skills program, the Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS), over a 7 month period with six 8th grade middle school students who had been identified with autism or a social disability. Outcome data and program …

Does Proximity To Wind Farms Affect The Value Of Nearby Residential Properties? Evidence From Washington And New York States, Natalie Camplair Jan 2012

Does Proximity To Wind Farms Affect The Value Of Nearby Residential Properties? Evidence From Washington And New York States, Natalie Camplair

Award Winning Economics Papers

The rapid growth of wind farms across rural communities in the U.S. has spurred concerns over the effect of wind turbines on residential property values. This paper presents a hedonic regression analysis of property values using a partial panel of properties from two counties in the United States. A total of 24 models are estimated. This paper compares the results of market and county-assessed data, interaction terms, and varying assumptions about the effect of wind turbines. This study finds weak evidence that property values near wind turbines are lower than nearby areas, but given methodological limitations and likely endogeneity bias …

U.S. Monetary Policy Announcements And Foreign Exchange Market Behavior, Qianyi Yang Jan 2012

U.S. Monetary Policy Announcements And Foreign Exchange Market Behavior, Qianyi Yang

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines the time-varying and currency-dependency nature of exchange rate responses following the U.S. monetary policy announcements. Using high frequency exchange rate data in the past decade, we find that the exchange rates of most major currencies against the US Dollar respond negatively to the monetary surprises in the 2001 recession, while the response becomes positive during the 2008 recession. Meanwhile, the JPY has the opposite response than the other major currencies in the 2008 recession. These results further confirm the nonlinearity in the relationship between exchange rate dynamics and fundamental news announcements.

Open Textbooks And Provincial Government Policy: A Look At The Issues, Lisa Di Valentino

FIMS Publications

In 2012, the British Columbia government announced a plan to fund a program that will result in the creation of open access textbooks for 40 lower-year university courses — the first such program in any of the provinces. This paper will argue that Ontario should follow British Columbia’s lead and invest in the development of a project to create and promote the use of open textbooks. The introduction will discuss the concept of open textbooks and the various initiatives and legislation that have been introduced in the United States, and British Columbia’s plan will be described in more detail. ‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor Jan 2012

‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor

FIMS Publications

The Obama administration has embraced ‘engagement’ as the dominant concept informing US public diplomacy. Despite its emphasis on facilitating dialogue with and among Muslims overseas, this article demonstrates that, in practice, engagement aims to leverage social media and related technologies to persuade skeptical audiences to empathize with American policies. Indeed, its primary means of implementation – participatory interactions with foreign publics – is inherently duplicitous. Through the authors’ description of how engagement is rooted in long-standing public relations and corporate marketing discourses, and in light of the historical and structural foundations of anti-Americanism, this contemporary public diplomacy strategy is shown …

Development And Application Of Methods Used To Source Prehistoric Southwestern Maize: A Review, Larry Benson Jan 2012

Development And Application Of Methods Used To Source Prehistoric Southwestern Maize: A Review, Larry Benson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Archaeological cobs free of mineral contaminants should be used to source the soils in which they were grown. Mineral contaminants often contain much higher concentrations of metals than vegetal materials and can alter a cob’s apparent metal and heavy-isotope content. Cleaning a cob via immersion in an acid solution for more than a few minutes will result in the incongruent and sometimes complete leaching of metals, including strontium (Sr), from the cob. When using 87Sr/86Sr to determine the location of potential agriculture fields, it is best to either integrate several depth-integrated soil samples or to integrate several …

Marps Sensitization: A Diversity Training Guide For Health Care Providers In Nigeria, Enhancing Nigeria's Hiv/Aids Response (Enr) Programme Jan 2012

Marps Sensitization: A Diversity Training Guide For Health Care Providers In Nigeria, Enhancing Nigeria's Hiv/Aids Response (Enr) Programme

HIV and AIDS

Men who have sex with men (MSM) present specific diagnostic and management challenges to counselors and health-care providers. High prevalence of HIV infection has been reported among MSM in Nigeria, driven partly by stigma, discrimination, lack of appropriate prevention strategies, limited research evidence, little recognition by policymakers, and inadequate knowledge and skills in dealing with MSM clients. In Nigeria, where homosexuality is illegal, the risk embodied in same-sex activities is high and makes hiding MSM activities almost a norm. Currently, health-care provider training materials that address most at-risk populations’ (MARPs) specific health needs are nonexistent in Nigeria. Knowledge of these …

The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act And Medicaid Expansion: Leadership Strategies For Effective Change Management In Managed Care Organizations, Emily Aurand

Theses and Graduate Projects

As a result of tlie 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), eligibility requirements for the Medicaid program were revised resulting in a greater number of people eligible to enroll in tlie government healthcare program. These circumstances require numerous organizational changes for Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) that administer the Medicaid program in order to accommodate the healthcare needs of the growing Medicaid population and comply with applicable regulatory requirements. This case study sought to identify effective leadership strategies employed by Minnesota Medicaid MCO change leaders guiding organizational change processes and seeking quality change outcomes, resulting from the externally …

Access To Higher Education For Undocumented Students, Meghan Flores Jan 2012

Access To Higher Education For Undocumented Students, Meghan Flores

Theses and Graduate Projects

The framework for this research comes from my professional experiences with the undocumented student population at three small, private, liberal arts institutions. Through these experiences, I have encountered that due to the lack of policy and/or communications of policy, treatment of financial aid resources are not equitable among these students within the same setting. The agenda for the research comes from direct work with undocumented students who are seeking clarity on their options. There are no published data on how private higher education institutions are addressing the issue of access for undocumented students. Therefore, the purpose of this research was …

Time For Myself, Time For Others: Gender Differences In The Meaning Of Retirement, Kate L. Lanning Jan 2012

Time For Myself, Time For Others: Gender Differences In The Meaning Of Retirement, Kate L. Lanning

Sociology Honors Projects

Research has demonstrated that work is a meaningful activity that contributes to peoples' identities. This meaning, however, may depend on the stage of the life course that one is in, and may be gendered. To contribute to understanding the social meaning of work and potentially gendered life-course transitions, I examine the experiences of older adults with work and retirement. Through interviews with both retired and working older adults, I examine whether and how older men and women differ from each other in the workplace and in retirement. Men and women face different challenges if they continue to work and when …

The Walls We Build: Borderwork And Manipulation Of Power Relations In Hebron, Shahar Eberzhon Jan 2012

The Walls We Build: Borderwork And Manipulation Of Power Relations In Hebron, Shahar Eberzhon

Sociology Honors Projects

Although borders mark the beginning on one political administrative unit and the ending of another, individuals who live in borderlands translate the abstract ideas of borders into part of their daily, physical reality. Conflicts about borders indicate that despite their static representations on maps, people in borderlands may challenge the legitimacy and meaning of these boundaries. Social interactions that are created through the borderwork of using, resisting, and avoiding borders and through practices of exclusion and inclusion affect the daily lives of communities. The main question this research will therefore answer is how borderwork in contested borderlands produces the types …
