Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet Jan 2012

Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper will use an existing model from Amiti and Wei (2009) to illustrate the potentially positive effects that offshoring will have on the productivity of American IT workers and the IT industry. The inputs that will be used to measure productivity are labor, capital, materials, service inputs, and the offshoring of materials and services and were collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on a previous study from Amiti and Wei (2009), the results may suggest that there is a positive correlation from offshoring and productivity.

Does Money Matter? An Empirical Analysis On The Effects Of Campaign Financing In Recent Senatorial Elections, Joseph Cunningham

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This empirical analysis quantifies political science variables and tests to see if the sources of campaign finance money matters and ultimately determines the most important factors affecting a candidate’s chances of becoming elected. Using data from the 2004 and 2010 Senate elections, this paper tests the importance of a number of political science variables including party affiliation, sources of campaign financing, and incumbency, among others. The effects of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and its democratic implications are also analyzed to see if money in politics weakens America’s democratic process. There are few studies in the field that are …

Social And Economic Factors Leading To Differences In Us State Unemployment, Taylor Neighbours

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper dives into the socio-economic factors that lead to differences in U.S. State unemployment rates. The study will look at and evaluate prior economic literature, including regression analysis, comparative statistics, and raw data from the BLS and Census Bureau. Further, it will take select parts from past models to create and analyze an economic regression model. The data to be found below is a cross-sectional interpretation of each of the 50 states for the years 2000 & 2010. The root causes for fluctuations in unemployment can help economists better understand how to monitor and manage unemployment levels on a …

Three empirical models are run, one for 2009, one for 2005 and one for 1999 data, to account for differences in household income, age of the head of household, employment status, and mortgage information. The results indicate that whether the home is owned or rented has a significant impact on household savings in each year.

Death By Religion? Individual Differences In Attitudes About Capital Punishment, Heather Johnston Jan 2012

Death By Religion? Individual Differences In Attitudes About Capital Punishment, Heather Johnston

UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses

There is evidence that a relationship between religiosity (intrinsic, extrinsic, indiscriminately pro-religious or indiscriminately anti-religious orientation toward one’s religious beliefs) and differences in attitudes about life and death social issues exists. Mainstream religions (e.g., Catholic and Protestant) have officially stated opposition to capital punishment while most individuals who are part of these mainstream religions favor capital punishment. In this study, 150 college students completed two different measures of religiosity and one measure of attitudes about capital punishment. Participant’s scores on two measures of religiosity were predictive of attitudes toward capital punishment. Intrinsically oriented individuals indicated more than extrinsically oriented individuals …

Early Postnatal Overnutrition: Potential Roles Of Gastrointestinal Vagal Afferents And Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Edward A. Fox, Jessica E. Biddinger

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Early postnatal overnutrition: Potential roles of gastrointestinal vagal afferents and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. PHYSIOL BEHAV 00(0) 000-000, 2012. Abnormal perinatal nutrition (APN) results in a predisposition to develop obesity and the metabolic syndrome and thus may contribute to the prevalence of these disorders. Obesity, including that which develops in organisms exposed to APN, has been associated with increased meal size. Vagal afferents of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract contribute to regulation of meal size by transmitting satiation signals from gut-to-brain. Consequently, APN could increase meal size by altering this signaling, possibly through changes in expression of factors that control vagal afferent …

The Influence Of Resonant Leadership Styles On Employee Engagement Within A Financial Services Organization, Ryan D. Maddux Jan 2012

The Influence Of Resonant Leadership Styles On Employee Engagement Within A Financial Services Organization, Ryan D. Maddux

Theses and Graduate Projects

Researchers suggest that job dissatisfaction in the United States is escalating rapidly. This is due in part to current economic issues but also to a growing disconnect between managers and employees. A recent study found that less than half of all employees are happy at work--the lowest satisfaction ratings in 22 years (Neal, 2010). This action research project focuses on one business line within a large international financial services organization and examines the relationship between resonant leadership styles and employee engagement. Internal surveys and interviews were conducted to establish a baseline understanding of organizational concepts including: Emotional intelligence, Resonant Leadership, …

Driving Employee Engagement: Contemporary Trends In Engagement, Sarah A. Nelson Jan 2012

Driving Employee Engagement: Contemporary Trends In Engagement, Sarah A. Nelson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Employee engagement is an important concept in today's workforce. Engaged employees work harder and more efficiently, while disengaged workers may in fact work against the company's mission. Employee engagement can be increased with a number of different interventions and initiatives. Internal social media platforms promote communication and collaboration among employees. Employees who have had additional training and development are more engaged, as well as employees who receive feedback from managers. Promoting a balance between work and life also leads to more engaged employees, as well as recognizing employees for the work they do. Managers can also learn ways to increase …

Image And Ability: The Role Of Image In Female Leadership, Emily Loiacano Jan 2012

Image And Ability: The Role Of Image In Female Leadership, Emily Loiacano

Theses and Graduate Projects

In a world where image is a pervasive part of society, research shows that the presentation of a personal image plays a critical role in the psychological and social contexts of leaders. The hypothesis of this study is that the image a leader projects can have significant influence over the perception of their capabilities, and the role that image plays is even more critical in female leaders. By being aware of image as a projection of their leadership qualities, a leader can make best use of the impression that they present.

Purpose: Compulsive Internet Use (CIU) has increasingly become an area of research among process addictions. Largely based on data from cross-sectional studies, a positive association between CIU and substance use has previously been reported. This study presents gender and country-specific longitudinal findings on the relationships between CIU and substance use. Methods: Data were drawn from youth attending non-conventional high schools, recruited into two similarly implemented trials conducted in China and the USA. The Chinese sample included 1,761 students (49% male); the US sample included 1,182 students (57% male) with over half (65%) of the US youth being of Hispanic ethnicity. …

Force Protection And Suicide Bombers: The Necessity For Two Types Of Canadian Military Red Teams, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2012

Force Protection And Suicide Bombers: The Necessity For Two Types Of Canadian Military Red Teams, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article will discuss why the use of two types of red teams - analytical and physical - to identify and then simulate ‘suicide bomber threat scenarios’ is necessary for the force protection training of deploying Canadian military units. Red teaming as a discipline can be divided into two basic forms: (1) analytical red teaming, which is diegetic in nature; that is, based upon descriptive products and decision support functions and (2) physical red teaming, which is mimetic in nature; that is, derived from live-action and role playing-based training with an opposing force (OPFOR) deployed against a friendly military unit. …

Cultural Relativism And Afghanistan: A Failure Of Policy Not Counterinsurgency Efforts, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

While it may be true that many Afghani people yearn for our freedoms and system of governance, such nation building cannot be done without radically reengineering Afghani tribal society. Incising only the offending portions of Afghani culture, as the sergeant suggests, will not work. Do we eliminate blood feuds but not child brides and the honor killings of soiled daughters? Do we stop the execution of Muslim converts to Christianity?

A Crucible Of Conflict: Third Generation Gang Studies Revisited, John P. Sullivan, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2012

A Crucible Of Conflict: Third Generation Gang Studies Revisited, John P. Sullivan, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This essay briefly recounts the evolution of the gangs that occupy failed communities and states, further discusses and updates the model of third generation street gangs discussed in an earlier Journal of Gang Research article—typically described simply as third generation gangs (3 GEN Gangs), and suggests strategies for coping with and mitigating this evolved form of gang violence. Of note is the lack of impact 3 GEN Gangs studies have had on domestically focused U.S. academic gang research while, at the same time, becoming a dominant model in use by defense analysis and scholars focusing on increasingly politicized non-state threat …

The Effects Of Adolescent Heavy Drinking On The Timing And Stability Of Cohabitation And Marriage, Lela Rankin Williams, Laura Wray-Lake, Eric Loken, Jennifer L. Maggs Jan 2012

The Effects Of Adolescent Heavy Drinking On The Timing And Stability Of Cohabitation And Marriage, Lela Rankin Williams, Laura Wray-Lake, Eric Loken, Jennifer L. Maggs

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Based on prospective British Cohort Study data, adolescent alcohol use predicted the timing and stability of committed partnerships between 16 and 34 years (n = 3278; 59% female). Propensity score methods balanced age 16 heavy drinkers (32.4%) and nonheavy drinkers on a range of relevant risk factors assessed in infancy and childhood. Adolescent heavy drinking predicted having ever cohabited, earlier transitions into cohabiting and marital relationships, more breakups, and an increased likelihood of divorce. Gender and social class moderated these relationships; heavy-drinking working-class males were especially likely to cohabit and to experience early entry into cohabitation and marriage. Implications …

Changing Forms Of Insurgency: Pirates, Narco Gangs And Failed States, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2012

Changing Forms Of Insurgency: Pirates, Narco Gangs And Failed States, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The primarily bipolar world that helped to characterize the decades long Cold War has begun to realign itself. The information revolution, increasing globalizations, the ongoing expansion of transnational terrorist and insurgent networks, and many other elements of this systemic level change have continued to take place into the early twenty-first century. Within the context of this large-scale shift in human and state relations, one question that has often been asked by analysis is whether changing forms of insurgency are taking place. If this is so, these changing forms of insurgency would be distinct from the currently dominant political form of …

The Sidis Case And The Origins Of Modern Privacy Law, Samantha Barbas Jan 2012

The Sidis Case And The Origins Of Modern Privacy Law, Samantha Barbas

Journal Articles

The American press, it’s been said, is freer to invade personal privacy than perhaps any other in the world. The tort law of privacy, as a shield against unwanted media exposure of private life, is very weak. The usual reason given for the weakness of U.S. privacy law as a bar on the publication of private information is the strong tradition of First Amendment freedom. But “freedom of the press” alone cannot explain why liberty to publish has been interpreted as a right to print truly intimate matters or to thrust people into the spotlight against their will. Especially in …

Growing Social Inequalities In Youth Civic Engagement? Evidence From The National Election Study, Laura Wray-Lake, Daniel Hart Jan 2012

Growing Social Inequalities In Youth Civic Engagement? Evidence From The National Election Study, Laura Wray-Lake, Daniel Hart

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Social class differences in civic engagement persist for both youth and adults. Although empirical evidence is mixed, several recent social changes pertaining to youth suggest that social inequalities in civic engagement may be growing over time for young people. Using data from the National Election Study, we compared trends for youth and older adults of varying education levels and tested the hypothesis of an increasing educational disparity in youth political participation. Results for voting supported our expectations: declines over time were found for less-educated youth only. Unexpectedly, participation in other political activities for more-educated youth declined more over time compared …
