The familiarity of faces is one of the key factors that come into play during human face analysis. However, there is very little research that studies face familiarity. In this paper, two methods are proposed to quantitatively measure the degree of familiarity of a face with respect to a known set. The methods are in accordance with the psychological study. In particular, non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is extended to learn a localized non-overlapping subspace representation of commonly experienced facial patterns from known faces. Contemporary Information Systems Development (ISD) takes place in a dynamic environment and is generally acknowledged as a complex activity. We investigate whether complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is relevant as a theoretical foundation for understanding ISD, and if so, what kind of conception can be achieved by utilizing the theory? Current network infrastructures are over-provisioned and thus exhibit poor power efficiency at low traffic load. In this paper, we consider networks comprising of bundled links, whereby each link has one or more physical cables that can be switched off independently. The problem at hand is then to switch off redundant cables during off peak periods, while retaining the QoS provided to existing traffic demands. Unfortunately, the problem to maximally shutdown redundant cables is an NP-complete problem. In this paper, we examine the use of image segmentation approaches for target detection in TWRI. The betweenclass variance thresholding, entropy-based segmentation, and Kmeans clustering are applied to segment target and clutter regions. Real 2D polarimetric images are used to demonstrate that simple histogram-based segmentation methods produce either comparable or improved performance over the Likelihood Ratio Tests (LRT) detector. Specifically, the results show that, for the cases considered, the entropy-based segmentation outperforms the other image segmentation methods and the LRT detector.

Purpose: A recent field safety notice from TomoTherapy detailed the underdosing of small, off-axis targets when receiving high doses per fraction. This is due to angular undersampling in the dose calculation gantry angles. This study evaluates a correction method to reduce the underdosing, to be implemented in the current version (v4.1) of the TomoTherapy treatment planning software. Methods: The correction method, termed "Super Sampling" involved the tripling of the number of gantry angles from which the dose is calculated during optimization and dose calculation. The coercivity and exchange bias field of ferro-/antiferromagnetic Co 90Fe10/CoFe-oxide bilayers were studied as function of the surface morphology of the bottom CoFe-oxide layer. The CoFe-oxide surface structure was varied systematically by low energy (0-70 V) Argon ion-beam bombardment before subsequent deposition of the Co90Fe10 layer. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that the bilayer consisted of hcp Co90Fe10 and rock-salt CoFe-oxide. At low temperatures, enhanced coercivities and exchange bias fields with increasing ion-beam bombardment energy were observed, which are attributed to defects and uncompensated moments created near the CoFe-oxide surface in increasing amounts with larger ion-beam bombardment energies. This paper presents an emergency control approach for preventing wide spread power interruption using multi-agent system. The proposed control algorithm is based on decentralized architecture of intelligent agents to achieve fast and accurate response when a catastrophic disturbance is identified in the system. By dividing the network into several areas, the voltage instability problem can be localized and countermeasures can be directed to the most affected area by the authorized local agent. This facilitates quick decision making within the system. The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been proved by a simulation of IEEE 57 bus test power system.

Self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signals are observed from a laser diode (LD) with optical feedbacks induced by an external target. SMI signals carry information related to both of the target and parameters of the LDs. However, the noise contained in SMI signals greatly degrades the applications of the SMI systems. In an MMSE based turbo equalization system, a soft mapper calculates the symbol mean and variance based on extrinsic Log-Likelihood-Ratios (LLRs) information coming from a Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) decoder. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of this module, and in particular, we employ a 3-segment linear approximation approach to calculate the mean and variance of data symbols from LLRs. In wireless communication, idle listening, receiving and transmitting are the main source of consumption of energy. This paper gives an overview of several techniques used for wireless networks. We incorporated PSM and PC to gain the advantage of PSM (reduce idle listening) and PC (reduce receiving and transmitting power) and implemented them in the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. The results show that the new hybrid technique saves more power than PSM and PC individually. © 2012 IEEE.

We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spinc manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spinc structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.

Recently, cooperative communication and Space-Time-Frequency-Codes (STFCs) have been introduced into the Multiband OFDM Ultra-Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) to improve the reliability, data rate and system capacity. This paper proposes a cooperative communication scheme for a four source node MB-OFDM UWB system using Quasi-Orthogonal STFCs, which is referred to as order-4 Quasi-Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-QOCCS). Simulation results show that the proposed 4-QOCCS provides significantly better error performance over the conventional MB-OFDM UWB and our order-2 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (2-OCCS) using the Alamouti STFCs, and even better than the order-4 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-OCCS), which we have been recently proposed, …
