Effects Of Image Congruency On Persuasiveness And Recall In Direct-To-Consumer Prescription Drug Advertising, Kristen M. Kiernicki

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

This study builds on previous studies by Baird-Harris and Smith and Shaffer (2000) and aims to test the relationship between image congruency in televised DTC advertisements, recall of risks and benefits, and perceived ad persuasiveness. Selective Asymmetric Capital Financing Behavior: Preference Towards Equity Financing, Donald Lien, Melody Lo, Jinlan Ni Jan 2012

Selective Asymmetric Capital Financing Behavior: Preference Towards Equity Financing, Donald Lien, Melody Lo, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

Using data from 1,217 publicly traded Chinese companies from 1994–2006, we show that the capital financing behavior of Chinese firms deviates substantially from the pecking order theory in that equity issues are always the preferred financing source for funding requirements. We further document the existence of a stylized asymmetric financing pattern — equity issues are used much more heavily over debt issues under the condition of a fund flow surplus versus a fund flow deficit, which is the result of Chinese firms selecting the degree of inherent equity-issue preference feasible to pursue given their fund flow condition.

The International Criminal Court, The United States, And What Next., Alexandria Russell Jan 2012

The International Criminal Court, The United States, And What Next., Alexandria Russell

The Corinthian

The International Criminal Court was set up in order to dissuade state officials from participating in behaviors that are considered war crimes and crimes against humanity. The U.S. is a major super power but not a pivotal character in the ICC institution. This fact has had negative effects on U.S. international policy. This paper explores first what the ICC is and how it came to be, and then addresses the weaknesses of the institution, U.S. relations with the ICC and how they effect U.S. international relations, and finally what policy changes need to be made in order to make the …

The Effects Of Dual Enrollment Courses: Do They Prepare Students For College?, Ernesto Soto Jan 2012

The Effects Of Dual Enrollment Courses: Do They Prepare Students For College?, Ernesto Soto

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The focus on academic success starts early for many students. For example, many high school students have clear career goals and may take steps to ensure success at the collegiate level in order to achieve their goals (McWhirter, Torres, Salgado, & Valdez, 2007). Studies have shown that students who rate high on academic self-efficacy while in high school continue to succeed in their postsecondary education (Eccles, Vida, & Barber, 2004; Eccles & Wigfield, 2002). One method in which high school students can be better prepared for postsecondary education and increase their academic self-efficacy (Margolis & McCabe, 2004) is by participating …

The sample for the study had an even fifty percent split between firstgeneration and non-first-generation college students. …

The Effect Of Working Memory (N-Back) Training On Fluid Intelligence, David Preece Jan 2012

The Effect Of Working Memory (N-Back) Training On Fluid Intelligence, David Preece

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this thesis is to report on a study that examined the effect of working memory training (using the n-back task) on fluid intelligence (Gf). Recent research by Jaeggi and colleagues (2008; 2010) found that training in a visualspatial n-back task resulted in gains on two different matrix reasoning tests of fluid intelligence (compared to participants who did no task). The present study replicated and extended these results by testing the fluid intelligence construct using a different type of fluid intelligence test, and employing an ‘active’ rather than ‘no-contact’ control group to account for motivational effects on intelligence …

Book Review: Making Chastity Sexy: The Rhetoric Of Evangelical Abstinence Campaigns, By Christine J. Gardner, Kelsy Burke Jan 2012

Book Review: Making Chastity Sexy: The Rhetoric Of Evangelical Abstinence Campaigns, By Christine J. Gardner, Kelsy Burke

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Evangelical messages about adolescent sexuality appear straight-forward: unless they are married (and heterosexual), teens should not have sex. However, as communications scholar Christine J. Gardner shows in her book, Making Chastity Sexy: The Rhetoric of Evangelical Abstinence Campaigns, how evangelicals go about promoting abstinence is both complicated and unexpected. Gardner focuses on how social meanings about religion and sexuality are constructed in evangelical abstinence campaign by examining the rhetoric of three U.S. campaigns (the primary focus of the book) and one African campaign. One of her most surprising findings—and the one for which the book’s title is based—is that U.S. …

India's Neoliberal Progress And Food Insecurity, Surat Horachaikul Jan 2012

India's Neoliberal Progress And Food Insecurity, Surat Horachaikul

Asian Review

Two decades ago India's then finance minister and current prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh set India on a new course of liberalization, privatization and globalization. This paper argues that the economic reform of 1991 was based on the concept of progress in the philosophy of neoliberalism, realized through the typical structural adjustment imposed by the World Bank and IMF, combined with Manmohan Singh's own vision of reform. This paper also evaluates the effects of neoliberal reform on food security in India. Despite high economic growth as measured by traditional GDP, food insecurity in India has shown little or no signs …

An Excuse For Common Goods: The Multipurposeness Of The "Human Security" Concept In Japan's Foreign Policy, Teewin Suputtikun Jan 2012

An Excuse For Common Goods: The Multipurposeness Of The "Human Security" Concept In Japan's Foreign Policy, Teewin Suputtikun

Asian Review

This article examines the functions of the concept of human security in Japans foreign policy. Tracing the process by which Japan internalized the idea into policy formation and public discourse, the article shows that human security as a concept has served multiple purposes in the national quest for appropriate international roles. On one hand, the concept is used to resist the twin forces pulling Japanese roles away from the desirable status quo. These forces are the external pressure for a more active military contribution from Japan; and the domestic constraint against contribution policy in general. On the other hand, the …

Human Security And Chinese Political Economy, Vorasakdi Mahatdhanobol Jan 2012

Human Security And Chinese Political Economy, Vorasakdi Mahatdhanobol

Asian Review

This article examines how China looks at the issue of human security and the change of their internal and external policies toward human security. Chinas repressive regime is now having a hard time maintaining itself while trying to enter into the world market. Opening up the country involves applying international versions of human rights for their citizens, adjusting their production system to suit international standards, cooperating with foreign countries, and so on. Changes that came with economic liberalization are shifting China into a new phase of development and governance with problems of ethnic conflict, corruption, and abuse of authority by …
