Domestic violence is a serious issue that can be predominantly challenging for undocumented immigrants to surpass given their citizenship status in the country. Immigrant victims of domestic violence, in particular, are in a foreign country exposed to an unknown language, culture, and legal system, as well as being isolated from family, friends, or any other possible support systems. Due to these circumstances immigrant victims of domestic violence rarely leave their homes largely due to mistrust for law enforcement and service agencies. The Struggle And Strength Of Sexual Minorities And Suicidality: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis, Albert L. Crump

The researcher conducted a Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis (QIMS) of the intersection of sexual minority status and suicidality. Seven qualitative research studies were identified which included the stories of members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community (n=96). Five overarching themes were discovered: Internal Struggle, External Struggle, Isolation, Internal Strength, and External Strength. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide was used to guide the interpretation of the findings of this QIMS in order to expand the understanding of suicide as it applies to the GLBT community. Implications for research, practice, and policy are discussed.

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has voted in favor of a revised version of the amendment to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature that was proposed in 2008. The purpose of the amendment is to expand and refine the methods of publication allowed by the Code, particularly in relation to electronic publication. The amendment establishes an Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature (with ZooBank as its online version), allows electronic publication after 2011 under certain conditions, and disallows publication on optical discs after 2012. “Wicked problems” are urgent, high-stake socioeconomic-environmental challenges that often involve ideological conflict and have no “best solutions.” Using examples from Maine’s Sustainability Solutions Initiative projects, Tim Waring describes how scientific models can be used to address these kinds of problems. When well-constructed and tested models are used to address policy-relevant issues, include input from stakeholders, and integrate social, economic and environmental dynamics, they can become “wicked tools” to address some of society’s biggest challenges.

Water is essential both to human survival and to the ecosystems on which people depend. Although Maine is blessed with abundant water sources, managing them is crucial for both short and long-term uses. The authors describe the varying time and spatial scales involved in managing water resources, pointing out that policy decisions made at one time can have far-reaching consequences. They provide illustrations of water-resource projects from Maine’s Sustainability Solutions Initiative, ranging in size from Sebago Laketo vernal pools on individual properties.

Using interviews, targeted questionnaires, and histori­cal documents, James Fleming and Erin Love show how history and “sense of place” can help encourage individuals to support environmental protection. The project they describe focuses on watershed protection in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine, and is part of a larger Sustainability Solutions Initiative project in that region. They argue that “connection to place leads to caring about it.”

Understanding environmental worldviews is impor­tant because values can play a strong part in defining and resolving policy debates. Mark Anderson, Caroline Noblet and Mario Teisl present analysis of a survey that included questions about Mainers’ environmental values. They note that people can value the environment in multiple ways at the same time, and that these values are not necessarily mutually exclusive. In the end, they say, “values matter” in environmental policy.

Given the likelihood of the development of offshore wind farms in Maine and the increasingly politicized nature of discussions about wind power in general, there is a need for more systematic information on Mainers’ opinions about offshore wind power. In this article, James Acheson provides information on the range of public opinion about offshore wind power based on a survey of fishermen, tourism-related business owners and coastal property owners in Midcoast Maine. He assesses the accuracy of some public concerns and discusses the broader policy issues raised about offshore wind development.

Superhero comic book characters have historically engaged issues of social concern. From Superman’s opposition to the Ku Klux Klan in 1947 (Bowers, 2011) to Captain America’s acceptance of a gay soldier in 1982 (Witt, Sherry, & Marcus, 1995) to Batman’s stance against landmines in 1996 (O’Neil, 1996), stories involving superheroes have frequently demonstrated a developed social awareness on national and international problems.
