Barack Obama: The Inevitable Nominee, Bradley M. Forsythe

Masters Theses

The 2008 Democratic primary is often regarded as a once-in-a-lifetime political event. Democratic frontrunner and former first lady Hillary Clinton faced off against Illinois junior Senator Barack Obama. Despite a commanding position in national polling that led many pundits to declare the race Clinton's to lose, her campaign faltered during the primary, allowing Obama to find himself in a commanding position to be the Democratic Party's nominee for president. An exploration of the two campaigns, however, reveals stark differences in strategy, messaging, fundraising, and the use of technology.

In terms of strategy, Hillary Clinton's campaign was unprepared to contest the …

Dynamic Crisis Modifiers: Bp's Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill, Catherine G. Bocke Jan 2012

Dynamic Crisis Modifiers: Bp's Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill, Catherine G. Bocke

Masters Theses

When an organizational crisis emerges, crisis communicators must craft specific messages for their stakeholders and the public. While an organization is attempting to shape how the public perceives it during a crisis, the media work to frame the public's perception of the crisis through news coverage. Situational crisis communication theory (SCCT) is a prescriptive theory that assesses a crisis situation to determine which crisis response will best protect the organization's reputation. Two factors, crisis history and severity, serve as modifiers that can affect the crisis situation, and ultimately influence the best response. BP's Gulf of Mexico oil spill serves as …

Prayers Of Obligation And Well-Being: A Study Of The Effects Of Orthodox Jewish Prayer, Charles T. Coleman Jan 2012

Prayers Of Obligation And Well-Being: A Study Of The Effects Of Orthodox Jewish Prayer, Charles T. Coleman

Masters Theses

In a study to explore the effect of concentration during Orthodox Jewish obligatory prayer on well-being, ten Orthodox Jewish prayers were rated by experts (Rabbis) for the inclusion of the five identified prayer types of adoration, thanksgiving, confession, supplication, and reception. The ratings were used to establish a prayer type score for each of the ten prayers studied. Other Orthodox Jewish males (non-Rabbis) were then surveyed about their individual level of concentration during the same ten prayers and about health and psychological well-being. Although the multiple regression analyses showed no link between degree of concentration and well-being, it was determined …

Upper Level Administrators: Communication With Students Via Social Media, David Adam Arnold Jan 2012

Upper Level Administrators: Communication With Students Via Social Media, David Adam Arnold

Masters Theses

The present qualitative study was executed by interviewing five upper level administrators at a four-year public institution in the Midwest in order to explain their current understanding of social media technologies, and in what ways they were currently using social media to connect with millennial students. Previous research has been done on millennials' use of technology and social media in the university setting; however, little research has focused on way non-millennial upper level administrators are using social media in order to purposefully engage students in a meaningful way. Themes from categories identified during one-on-one interviews indicate that upper level administrators …

The Concurrent And Longitudinal Effects Of Maternal Approval And Sexual Communication On Adolescent Sexual Activity And Std Acquisition, Amy Blackmer Jan 2012

The Concurrent And Longitudinal Effects Of Maternal Approval And Sexual Communication On Adolescent Sexual Activity And Std Acquisition, Amy Blackmer

Masters Theses

Adolescent sexual activity can involve risky behaviors, such as failure to use a condom and having multiple sexual partners, which leads to increased risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis. Prior research has shown that maternal factors, including maternal report of sexual communication and adolescent perceived approval of sexual activity, are associated with the level of sexual activity engaged in by adolescents. The present study utilized data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health project (Add Health) to examine the relationship between maternal reports of sexual communication, adolescent perception of maternal approval, and adolescent gender on concurrent and later …

Social Identity Theory In Campus Recreation: Examining Organizational And Exercise Identification Among Recreation Center Users, Kiel Emberton Jan 2012

Social Identity Theory In Campus Recreation: Examining Organizational And Exercise Identification Among Recreation Center Users, Kiel Emberton

Masters Theses

Social identity theory is often used in commercial settings to provide a basis for psychographic market segmentation. This usage has led to the development of organization identification in traditional business settings. Campus recreation is unique in that the primary product of consumption is exercise. In describing exercise behavior, social identity theory has been applied to explain the unique psychological attachments exercisers have to their exercise behavior. This application of social identity theory created the exercise identity construct. The purpose of this study was to examine social identity theory in campus recreation. Specifically, this study investigated the correlation between frequency of …

The Impact Of Multimedia Technology On Candidate Website Visitors, Michael Parkin Jan 2012

The Impact Of Multimedia Technology On Candidate Website Visitors, Michael Parkin

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Candidate websites have become a standard part of contemporary campaigns, yet researchers and practitioners know little about how their design affects voters. This article investigates how the decision to present information with multimedia (i.e., audio and=or video) influences the evaluations and vote intentions of candidate website visitors. Results from an experiment show that using multimedia had a modest net benefit resulting from conditional reactions based on participants’ party identification and political interest— the candidate’s partisan supporters reacted positively while nonsupporters, particularly those with limited political interest, were less impressed. These findings provide some initial empirical evidence of the impact that …

Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior: An Investigation Of The Influence Of Neighborhood Crime Rates On Mode Choice – Phase Ii, Mti Report 11-04, Christopher Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Justin Meek, Matthew Piven Jan 2012

Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior: An Investigation Of The Influence Of Neighborhood Crime Rates On Mode Choice – Phase Ii, Mti Report 11-04, Christopher Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Justin Meek, Matthew Piven

Mineta Transportation Institute

There are considerable environmental and public health benefits if people choose to walk, bicycle, or ride transit, instead of drive. However, little work has been done on the effects of neighborhood crimes on mode choice. Instinctively, we understand that the threats posed by possible criminal activity in one’s neighborhood can play a major role in the decision to drive, take transit, walk or ride a bicycle, but so far little empirical evidence supports this notion, let alone guides public infrastructure investments, land use planning, or the allocation of police services. This report--describing Phase 2 of a research study conducted for …

Understanding Transit Ridership Demand For A Multi-Destination, Multimodal Transit Network In An American Metropolitan Area, Research Report 11-06, Gregory Thompson, Jeffrey Brown, Torsha Bhattacharya, Michal Jaroszynski Jan 2012

Understanding Transit Ridership Demand For A Multi-Destination, Multimodal Transit Network In An American Metropolitan Area, Research Report 11-06, Gregory Thompson, Jeffrey Brown, Torsha Bhattacharya, Michal Jaroszynski

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study examines the factors underlying transit demand in the multi-destination, integrated bus and rail transit network for Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta provides an opportunity to explore the consequences of a multi-destination transit network for bus patrons (largely transit-dependent riders) and rail patrons (who disproportionately illustrate choice rider characteristics). Using data obtained from the 2000 Census, coupled with data obtained from local and regional organizations in the Atlanta metropolitan area, we estimate several statistical models that explain the pattern of transit commute trips across the Atlanta metropolitan area. The models show that bus riders and rail riders are different, with bus …

Finding Common Ground: When The Hippie Counterculture Immigrated To A Rural Redwood Community, Lisa Gruwell Spicer Jan 2012

Finding Common Ground: When The Hippie Counterculture Immigrated To A Rural Redwood Community, Lisa Gruwell Spicer

WWU Graduate School Collection

Youth of the 1960s took a collective stand against the establishment, challenging hegemonic forces intent on turning an informed citizenry into mere consumers; hypocrisy from the highest levels of government (Harrington 1962) was challenged by students, college enrollment was unprecedented (Roszak 1968). Unable to cause change at the top, scores of young people dropped out of mainstream culture in search of a better way to live (Miller 1991). Back-to-the-landers are the surviving members of the counterculture movement (Jacob 1997). Different from Sixties' political radicals or utopian commune hippies, the back-to-the-land movement is evidence of counterculture success and provides an ideological …
