"Stratum Continuum Of Information: Scolarly Communications And The Role Of University Libraries", Leo Waaijers

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As a consequence of digitization universities have to investigate their scholarly communication process. In fact, this is a quest for values that goes beyond the issues of the day. Once found, these values operate as criteria for assessing competencies, roles and instruments.

The communication process must allow for free exchange of ideas and results. In particular, knowledge created in the public domain must be open accessible. The process must be reliable, lend credibility to authors and give support to users. The respective competencies are logistics, validation and mediation. New technologies do not only support these classical aspirations, but develop their …

"The Developing World And The Digital Revolution - What To Do", Barry Mahon

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Internet and all it implies has pre-occupied many in the information community. It has revolutionised the ways and means of distribution of information. But what does it actually mean to the developing world? This presentation, based on personal experience, will explode the myth that the digital revolution will enable developing countries to catch up.

I Am A Contradiction: Feminism And Feminist Identity In The Third Wave, Meredith A. Evans, Chris Bobel Dec 2012

I Am A Contradiction: Feminism And Feminist Identity In The Third Wave, Meredith A. Evans, Chris Bobel

Chris Bobel

How is Third Wave feminism defined? What are the implications for self-labeling as a feminist and the evolution of the “I’m not a feminist, but. . . .” group? While much controversy surrounds the etiology and even the very existence of a “Third Wave” of feminism, this nascent movement is a significant aspect of the current dialogue on contemporary feminism. Therefore, it is important to examine the history and the meaning of the identity of Third Wave. In an attempt to elucidate contemporary feminism, four key Third Wave collections of personal narratives were chosen and analyzed for current definitions of …

“Take This Class If You Like To Be Brainwashed”: Walking The Knife’S Edge Between Education And Indoctrination, Chris Bobel Dec 2012

“Take This Class If You Like To Be Brainwashed”: Walking The Knife’S Edge Between Education And Indoctrination, Chris Bobel

Chris Bobel

This article presents a case study or, perhaps more accurately, a pedagogical memoir that interrogates life inside my classroom as yet another site of transformation, a place where inner works become public acts. This story illustrates Anzaldúa's seven stages of conocimiento collapsed into four moments. Through an examination of "data" derived from my students' (anonymous) reflections on interacting with course material during the 15 -week term of my introductory Women's Studies class, I demonstrate the process of conocimiento, the complex series of awakenings, reckonings and integrations that build the foundation of social justice. I end by noting that what Anzaldúa …

Concluding Reflections—A Dialogue: This Bridge We Are Building: “Inner Work, Public Acts”, Chris Bobel, Tim Sieber, Karen L. Suyemoto, Shirley Tang, Ann Torke

Chris Bobel

I suppose it is still a risky business for those of us in academia to expose and express too much of our inner, authentic selves, right? But why should it be like this?? What does it do to us? I'm glad that we had a chance to explore a little about our true selves with each other and out in the public at the conference! Gloria Anzaldúa was always ahead of her time. She has given us a powerful language to reflect on our experiences, and once again, it is Gloria who has made this intimate space possible for all …

Introduction: This Bridge We Are Building: “Inner Work, Public Acts”, Chris Bobel, Tim Sieber, Karen L. Suyemoto, Shirley Tang, Ann Torke

The symposium for which this is an introduction arose like a flower out of soil usually not known for nourishing vibrant, critical intellectual reflections: routine university governance committee work. All authors have been co-members for two years of the Diversity Committee, of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Sciences and Mathematics, at the University of Massachusetts Boston. While it is true that most of us share wider intellectual and programmatic collaborations outside this committee, it was genuinely the task of doing our committee work that gave impetus to this panel. For this symposium, we used as an …
