Law Enforcement Personnel And Lawmaking, Katrina Roberts Jan 2013

Law Enforcement Personnel And Lawmaking, Katrina Roberts

A with Honors Projects

Police officers have the difficult job of reconciling two deeply held but conflicting values: our desire to be safe and secure and our strong belief in the right of individuals to be free from government coercion and excessive control. How law enforcement officers and departments handle this conflict has a direct bearing on how the public sees them. As a culture, we expect our police officers to be able to balance these goals, but when they veer off too far we criticize them. At the extreme, too heavy a focus on order and safety may border on police brutality.

Understanding Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years Of Solitude: An Analysis With A Lens For History And Anthropology, John D. Norcross Jan 2013

Understanding Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years Of Solitude: An Analysis With A Lens For History And Anthropology, John D. Norcross

A with Honors Projects

One Hundred Years of Solitude is a work of fiction, but the
happenings of this novel directly parallel the regional history of the
Caribbean coast of Colombia along with its interactions with Bogotá (the
capitol of Colombia) and the surrounding nation. In an area of the world
where any post-colonial history is remarkably fluid and an accurate precolonial
history is almost non-existent, Garcia Marquez’s account of
historical happenings within the realm of fiction is remarkably
significant.

Processes Underlying Syntactic Control: Evaluating Linguistically Diverse Children, Vanessa R. Raschke Jan 2013

Processes Underlying Syntactic Control: Evaluating Linguistically Diverse Children, Vanessa R. Raschke

Dissertations

The current study focused on the mechanisms involved in syntactic awareness development in monolingual and bilingual (English/Spanish-speaking) nine-year-olds. Inclusion of child language brokers (those who translate and interpret for non-English speaking family members) diversified the definition of "bilingual." Previous research has shown bilingual advantages in areas of metalinguistic awareness and executive function (e.g., Bialystok, 2010; Davidson, Raschke, & Pervez, 2010), however, child language brokers have not been distinguished in these studies. These children, due to early language-switching and translation duties, may have differential development of areas of inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory, areas suspected to aid in metalinguistic awareness …

Recommender Systems As A Mobile Marketing Service, Donald J. Kridel, Daniel R. Dolk, David Castillo

Department of Economics Faculty Works

Recommender systems (RSs) have become a familiar artifact in cyberspace as a vehicle for increasing revenues while deepening customer loyalty and satisfaction. Typically RS are developed in house by companies with a large product line and customer base. However, the structure of RS is often straightforward, and effective systems can be developed at relatively low cost, and thus offered as a marketing service. We discuss the anatomy of a specific recommender system designed for a telecommunication carrier which uses predictive analytics in the form of collaborative filtering techniques to recommend products to users. Collaborative filtering (CF) is based upon the …

Lessons From Health Reform, Trish Riley Jan 2013

Lessons From Health Reform, Trish Riley

Maine Policy Review

Maine’s Dirigo Health reform is a microcosm in the current sea of health reform, but a full decade after its enactment the similarities to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are striking. Both reforms created subsidized, private health insurance, negotiated by an independent entity; both expanded Medicaid and included strategies to improve quality and lower cost; and both met with strong, well-organized conservative opposition. This essay briefly explains the politics surrounding the Dirigo reform and the compromises that allowed Dirigo to continue under two governors and serve over 41,000 people and nearly 1,000 small businesses which can transition to the ACA …

The Impact Of Post-Recession State Revenue Reductions On Maine's Municipalities, Emily Shaw Jan 2013

The Impact Of Post-Recession State Revenue Reductions On Maine's Municipalities, Emily Shaw

Maine Policy Review

Maine municipalities have received substantially less revenue from the state over the past several years, due to a combination of financial pressures on state budgets and state administrative policy preferences. The result is that municipalities have been forced to restructure the provision and funding of local services through a combination of reducing spending in some categories, raising additional money from residents and other users of town services, or taking on additional municipal debt. However, on average, Maine’s municipalities have so far been unable to reduce their total spending. This discussion of municipal responses to reduced state revenue is based on …

Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Performance, And Cognitive Complaints Among Individuals With Hiv, Andrea Lynn Hobkirk Jan 2013

Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Performance, And Cognitive Complaints Among Individuals With Hiv, Andrea Lynn Hobkirk

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The rates of depression and neuropsychological impairment in HIV-positive populations are considerably higher than the general population. Consistent research suggests that depression is not related to cognitive impairment in HIV, however the majority of these studies were conducted with unidimensional or dichotomous measures of depression, weak methodologies, and small sample sizes. There is limited research suggesting that affective and somatic depressive symptoms alone may be associated with neuropsychological impairment in HIV, possibly through central nervous system dysfunction, yet no study to date has assessed this relation with an adequate sample size and a full neuropsychological battery. In addition, no study …

The Effects Of Federal Reserve Liquidity Facilities On Inter-Bank Borrowing Rates, Isaac Green Jan 2013

The Effects Of Federal Reserve Liquidity Facilities On Inter-Bank Borrowing Rates, Isaac Green

Honors Papers

In the summer of 2007, stress in money markets created concern among economic policymakers. Fears of counter-party risk and concerns regarding the quality of bank collateral caused tremendous funding pressures for commercial and investment banks, which relied heavily on short-term borrowing. Initial attempts by the Federal Reserve to provide liquidity to banks and to alleviate strains in money markets through conventional monetary policy channels proved ineffective. After a sustained period of financial stress, the Federal Reserve introduced several programs in late 2007 and in early 2008 to address the liquidity needs of market participants. These programs were geared toward addressing …

A largely student-led organization, GlobeMed partners each chapter with its own unique community health organization. My thesis is an ethnographic study that draws from narratives of young people, analyzes the organizational structure, and provides a broad contextualization of GlobeMed. First, I explore the history and development of GlobeMed. I then present life histories of young people involved in …

The Presence Of The Past In Three Guatemalan Classrooms: The Role Of Teachers In A Post-Conflict Society, Margaret Paulin

Honors Papers

Between 1960 and 1996 Guatemala experienced a horrific civil war and genocide that left the country divided. In the years after the conclusion of this war, Guatemala's history of conflict has remained the subject of intense debate, particularly among those who hold political and social power. To consolidate the narrative of the civil war and its causes, the government passed a series of education reforms that highlighted the importance of social studies education for building a new and peaceful nation. This study examines the impact of the education reforms on Guatemalan schools using historical scholarship and ethnographic research. Based upon …

Intersection(S) Between Sociocultural Knowledge, Classroom Discourse And Stance, John Munyui Muchira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Speakers of all languages align their talk to that of their peers in order to create identity in social discourse. While students' interactions in class reveal awareness of their personal educational achievements, they also exhibit a desire to inform others about their socio-cultural knowledge, their beliefs, and feelings. A number of studies have shown how participants create interactional environments where they can not only expand their knowledge in instructional styles but to a great extent construct and reconstruct their personas. Sociocultural knowledge and stancetaking has a great impact on classroom discourse and language learning. My study was conducted on an …

Cyber Bullying And Social Support In A College Population, Alicia Luscomb Autry Jan 2013

Cyber Bullying And Social Support In A College Population, Alicia Luscomb Autry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data also indicates that bullying, especially chronic levels of bullying, during childhood may lead to lasting negative effects in adulthood. The recent introduction of bullying through electronic media has sparked interest in examining bullying with older adolescents and young adults, as early research on cyber bullying suggests that this is a growing problem in the young adult population. The purpose of this study is to examine how perceived social support influences the relationship between cyber bullying and psychological functioning cyber bullying in the college population. An Examination Of Gentrification And Related Displacement Of Black Residents In Portland's Boise Neighborhood, 1990-2010, Jordan Jordan

University Honors Theses

Issues related to gentrification and its primary consequence, the displacement of vulnerable populations from their homes and communities, are rightly considered among the most pressing social concerns faced by urban communities. Portland, Oregon has seen many of its neighborhoods undergo the gentrification transition, especially in traditionally Black neighborhoods. The Boise neighborhood lies within Northeast Portland's Albina district, which has served as the cultural and commercial heart of Portland's Black community for generations. In the 1990 Census, over 70% of the population of Boise (situated within Multnomah County Census tract 34.02) were Black, while 26% were White. By 2010, those figures …
