Gifts From The Elders: Honouring The Past For A Healthier Tomorrow, Chantelle Richmond, James Fortier Dec 2012

Gifts From The Elders: Honouring The Past For A Healthier Tomorrow, Chantelle Richmond, James Fortier

Chantelle Richmond

“Gifts from the Elders” follows five Anishinaabe youth on a summer research project with their Elders, whose stories guide them on a journey back to proceeding generations that lived a healthy lifestyle off of the land. Their stories chronicle the devastating impact that environmental and cultural dispossession had on the flow of knowledge from Elders to youth, and ultimately on the health of their people. As their summer comes to an end, the youth emerge with “gifts” of knowledge and teachings from their Elders, inspiring a renewed determination to forge a hopeful and healthy future for the next generation.

Psychological Distress In African American Grandmothrs Raising Grandchildren: The Contribution Of Child Behavior Problems, Physical Health, And Family Resources, Susan Kelley, Deborah Whitley, Peter Campos Dec 2012

Psychological Distress In African American Grandmothrs Raising Grandchildren: The Contribution Of Child Behavior Problems, Physical Health, And Family Resources, Susan Kelley, Deborah Whitley, Peter Campos

Deborah M. Whitley

Diminished psychological health has been identified among caregiving grandmothers. The intent of this investigation was to examine psychological distress levels, as well as their predictors, in a sample of 480 caregiving African American grandmothers, mean age 56 years. Almost 40% (39.8%) of participants had clinically elevated psychological distress scores. Results of hierarchical multiple regression indicated that internalizing and externalizing child behavior problems, poor grandmother physical health, younger age of grandmother, and lack of family resources predicted 31% of the variance in psychological distress. Results provide direction for nursing interventions aimed at enhancing the psychological well-being of caregiving grandmothers.

Offshoring, Unemployment, And Welfare With Risk Averse Workers, Priya Ranjan Dec 2012

Offshoring, Unemployment, And Welfare With Risk Averse Workers, Priya Ranjan

Priya Ranjan

This paper studies the welfare and policy implications of offshoring when risk averse workers face the risk of unemployment. If offshored inputs can be easily substituted for domestic workers, then offshoring reduces wages and increases unemployment. In this situation, in the absence of any government intervention offshoring not only reduces the welfare of workers but could reduce aggregate welfare as well if workers are highly risk averse and the markets for insurance against unemployment risk are missing. In addition to unemployment insurance, the role of employment protection policies- severance payments and administrative cost of firing -in protecting workers against the …

Graduate Labor Economics Ii (Econ 7430/Ilrle 7460), Matthew Freedman

Matthew Freedman

This course is one-fourth of a two-semester sequence in graduate labor economics. This segment will focus on theories of principal-agent models and compensation design; firm, industry, and occupation effects; job search theory; and labor market policy evaluation. In addition to covering the basic theory behind these subjects, we will discuss the major empirical challenges surrounding each topic. We will go on to develop and apply different econometric approaches to dealing with such challenges, including difference-in-differences, instrumental variable estimation, and regression discontinuity.

See also the Labor Economics Seminar Series.

Course materials are posted on Blackboard.

Does Atlanta Value Marta? Selecting An Autoregressive Model To Recover Willingness To Pay, Juan Moreno-Cruz, Gregory Macfarland, Laurie Garrow Dec 2012

Does Atlanta Value Marta? Selecting An Autoregressive Model To Recover Willingness To Pay, Juan Moreno-Cruz, Gregory Macfarland, Laurie Garrow

Juan B. Moreno-Cruz

Understanding homeowners’ marginal willingness-to-pay (MWTP) for proximity to public transportation infrastructure is important for planning and policy. Naïve estimates of MWTP, however, may be biased as a result of spatial dependence, spatial correlation, and/or spatially endogenous variables. In this paper we discuss a class of spatial autoregressive models that control for these spatial effects, and apply them to sample data collected for the Atlanta, Georgia housing market. We provide evidence that a general-to-specific model selection methodology that relies on the generality of the spatial Durbin model (SDM) should be preferred to the classical specific-to-general methodology that begins with an assumption …

Maritime Security Issues In An Arc Of Instability And Opportunity. Security Challenges, Quentin Hanich, Sam Bateman Dec 2012

Maritime Security Issues In An Arc Of Instability And Opportunity. Security Challenges, Quentin Hanich, Sam Bateman

Quentin Hanich

The Pacific Arc of islands and archipelagos to the north and east of Australia has been characterised both as an ‘arc of instability’ and as an ‘arc of opportunity’. It is the region from or through which a threat to Australia could most easily be posed, as well as an area providing opportunities for Australia to work on common interests with the ultimate objective of a more secure and stable region. Maritime issues are prominent among these common interests. This article identifies these issues and their relevance to Australia’s maritime strategy. It suggests measures Australia might take to exploit the …

Hugh Of St Victor (1096–1141) And Anglo-French Cartography, Daniel Terkla Dec 2012

Hugh Of St Victor (1096–1141) And Anglo-French Cartography, Daniel Terkla

Daniel Terkla

Recent research in England and France on twelfth- and thirteenth-century cartography posits Hugh of St Victor as an important source for ideas incorporated in maps of the period. P. D. A. Harvey and Patrick Gautier Dalché have noted Hugh’s influence, and Peter Barber has described a ‘third-stream’ of map making flowing from Hugh’s concepts of mapping through the Munich Isidore map (c.1130) and into a group of important Anglo-French mappaemundi. This article shows how Hugh’s theography—his theological cartography—reached England from the Royal Abbey and School of St Victor in Paris. To do this I outline Hugh’s image-based teaching and major …

Aid Dependence In Cambodia: How Foreign Assistance Undermines Democracy, Sophal Ear Dec 2012

Aid Dependence In Cambodia: How Foreign Assistance Undermines Democracy, Sophal Ear

Sophal Ear

International intervention liberated Cambodia from pariah state status in the early 1990s and laid the foundations for more peaceful, representative rule. Yet the country's social indicators and the integrity of its political institutions declined rapidly within a few short years, while inequality grew dramatically. Conducting an unflinching investigation into these developments, Sophal Ear reveals the pernicious effects of aid dependence and its perversion of Cambodian democracy.

International intervention and foreign aid resulted in higher maternal (and possibly infant and child) mortality rates and unprecedented corruption by the mid-2000s. Similarly, in example after example, Ear finds the more aid dependent a …

A Field Guide To Making Food Good: An Interactive Tool For Participatory Research Supporting Difficult Conversations, K. Valentine Cadieux Dec 2012

A Field Guide To Making Food Good: An Interactive Tool For Participatory Research Supporting Difficult Conversations, K. Valentine Cadieux

K. Valentine Cadieux

The resource described here is a prototype for a "field guide" to what makes food good, focusing on how to identify someone else's "good," even (or especially) if you don't think you agree with that person. I provide some background to the project of developing this field guide, and then describe the tool itself and some implications and challenges involved in using it. I focus on ways the tool addresses interaction between competing perspectives on what makes food good, and the values different constituencies prioritize as they attempt to institutionalize their vision of a good food system. My collaborators and …
