Towards A Critical Intersectional Rhetoric: Critical Rhetoric Meets Intersectionality, Michelle Kearl Dec 2013

Towards A Critical Intersectional Rhetoric: Critical Rhetoric Meets Intersectionality, Michelle Kearl

Michelle Kelsey Kearl

The most recent treatments of critical rhetoric have attempted to expand its appropriate methodological focus (Hess, 2011; Hess & Herbig, 2011; Middleton, Senda-Cook, & Endres, 2011). It is within this expansion that I pitch this theoretical interrogation and building of critical rhetoric. While the newest research argues for a variety of in situ, ethnographic, and other considerations of ‘live’ rhetorics, my investments are more directly in the responsibility of critical interpretation of texts. McKerrow (1989) establishes a series of obligations for critical rhetoricians as they analyze rhetorical artifacts; two critiques, eight praxes, and a perpetual criticism is no small endeavor. …

Careers In Music Librarianship Iii: Reality And Reinvention, Susannah Cleveland, Joe Clark Dec 2013

Careers In Music Librarianship Iii: Reality And Reinvention, Susannah Cleveland, Joe Clark

Susannah Cleveland

Music librarianship—a profession that brings joy and satisfaction to many—is subject to constant change that requires, in turn, continual adaptation from its practitioners so that they become comfortable with new technologies and formats, changing standards, and fresh approaches. Relevant and solid training and education are crucial to success in this field, but they alone are insufficient to guarantee placement or promotion. Recent economic shifts have created additional instability, leaving graduates from programs in librarianship sometimes unemployed and with little feedback about the quality of their experience and education while their employed counterparts likewise have little knowledge of their skills’ relevance …

Equitable Sharing: Distributing The Benefits And Detriments Of Democratic Society, Thomas Kleven Dec 2013

Equitable Sharing: Distributing The Benefits And Detriments Of Democratic Society, Thomas Kleven

Thomas Kleven

The book argues that a principle of equitable sharing is fundamental to the concept of democracy and to the democratic society the United States purports to be. It examines the political philosophies of John Locke, John Stuart Mill, and John Rawls, all of which contain a principle of equitable sharing in some form. It then examines the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, both of which evidence a commitment to equitable sharing as foundational to the democratic society they contemplate. The book argues that the Supreme Court also has a meaningful role to play in the dialogue over the requirements …

Law, Objectives Of Government And Regimes Of Truth: Foucault’S Understanding Of Law And The Transformation Of The Law Of The Eu Internal Market, Leila Brännström Dec 2013

Law, Objectives Of Government And Regimes Of Truth: Foucault’S Understanding Of Law And The Transformation Of The Law Of The Eu Internal Market, Leila Brännström

Leila Brännström

Drawing on Security, Territory, Population and The Birth of Biopolitics, this article aims, firstly, to consolidate our understanding of Foucault’s engagement with law by fleshing out his approach to law and by clarifying that he distinguishes between different kinds of law on the basis of the objectives that law serves and the regime of truth that it embodies. Secondly, using this understanding, the article proceeds to illustrate how the objectives and the regime of truth of the EU internal market law have been displaced in the last few decades. It is argued that this body of law has increasingly come …

Reclaiming Eroticism In Academia, Emma Bell, Amanda Sinclair Dec 2013

Reclaiming Eroticism In Academia, Emma Bell, Amanda Sinclair

Amanda Sinclair

In this article we address the question ‘what are we to do with ourselves?’ by arguing for the reclamation of the erotic in higher education. By defining the erotic in a way which encompasses the pursuit of pleasure and love, we seek to re-differentiate the collapsed categories of sex and eros. Universities have always been environments where a love of learning and pleasure in pedagogy is possible. Yet a range of cultural and societal factors have rendered academic life on the one hand disembodied, and on the other, commodified and sexualized, especially for women. Our suggestion is that these effects …

From Freedom Rides To Justice Rides: Analogizing Social Movement Rhetoric In A Post-Identity America., Michelle Kearl Dec 2013

From Freedom Rides To Justice Rides: Analogizing Social Movement Rhetoric In A Post-Identity America., Michelle Kearl

Michelle Kelsey Kearl

This presentation explores the rhetorical strategies, specifically the use of analogy, used in the rhetoric of the Created Equal organization. Created Equal, an anti-abortion activist organization, argues that it is a social movement in the vein of the Civil Rights Movement. The rhetoric employed by the organization is remarkable in its pedestrian attempt to veil its religious ideology, as well as its attempt to closely associate itself with the traditional Civil Rights agenda. Specifically, the tactics, images, and promotional material used and produced by the organization both explicitly and implicitly equivocate their commitments to stopping abortion to the demands of …

A Multimodal Analysis Of The Environment Beat In A Music Video, Judith (Judie) Cross, Carmen Maier Dec 2013

A Multimodal Analysis Of The Environment Beat In A Music Video, Judith (Judie) Cross, Carmen Maier

Judith (Judie) L Cross

The interrelationships between the environment and society have become cause for general concern amongst a diverse range of members in the international community of the twenty-first century. In this chapter, Michael Jackson’s music video, Earth Song, is critically analyzed in order to explore how environmental concerns are construed and communicated through a multimodal text specific to popular culture. We use a social semiotic perspective to analyze in detail how semiotic modes interrelate and impact on the conceptualization of time and space, as vital ingredients for the complex and dynamic ways by which meanings, values and practices are realized and communicated.

Book Review: Neighbors And Neighborhoods: Elements Of Successful Community Design By Sidney Brower, Michelle Thompson

Michelle M. Thompson

This book would be useful as a complement to a fundamental text on community design and planning. The case studies expand the discussion beyond the design process while including the process of community bonding and relationship building. Brower’s interdisciplinary approach will make this book a useful text in social-science courses such as public policy, psychology, and urban planning.

Governance Approaches That Can Be Used To Implement Sustainability Criteria, Evgenia Pavlovskaia Dec 2013

Governance Approaches That Can Be Used To Implement Sustainability Criteria, Evgenia Pavlovskaia

Evgenia Pavlovskaia

Implementation of sustainability criteria, both in legal frameworks and voluntary sustainability standards, is an urgent and important issue. In the article, three less state-centric governance approaches and their capacity to be used to implement sustainability criteria have been investigated. The chosen approaches are good governance, multi-level governance and selfgovernance. Their potential strengths and weaknesses have been pointed out. The research indicates that sustainability criteria can be implemented in different ways, which have the potential to highlight, strengthen or weaken different aspects of their function. The use of different governance approaches, or their combinations, can lead to different implementation results for …

Branding And Designing Disability: Reconceptualising Disability Studies, Elizabeth Depoy, Stephen Gilson Dec 2013

Branding And Designing Disability: Reconceptualising Disability Studies, Elizabeth Depoy, Stephen Gilson

Elizabeth DePoy

Because design is ubiquitous in popular culture, economics and politics, design theory and practice have been increasingly criticized and analyzed in multiple domains including conceptualizing, planning, creating, and branding ideas, products, spaces, geographies, practices, and concrete entities. However, despite the apprehension by social marketers of design and branding to promote socially responsible behavior change, we have not yet come to discuss and thus understand the power of design and branding in fashioning diversity categories, their worth, their membership, and their influence on individual and group identity, leaving a huge gap in intellectual development and guidance to prompt global social change …

Dysfunctional Eating In An Australian Community Sample: The Role Of Emotional Regulation. Impulsivity And Reward And Punishment Sensitivity, Peta Stapleton, Melissa Whitehead Dec 2013

Dysfunctional Eating In An Australian Community Sample: The Role Of Emotional Regulation. Impulsivity And Reward And Punishment Sensitivity, Peta Stapleton, Melissa Whitehead

Peta B. Stapleton

This study aimed to examine the role of emotion regulation and reinforcement sensitivity in dysfunctional eating behaviours. Two hundred twenty-eight adults from the Australian community completed self-report inventories assessing the variables. Dysfunctional restrained eaters differed from those who did not engage in restrained eating in terms of their emotion regulation, impulsivity, and sensitivity to reward. Difficulties in emotion regulation, low impulsivity, and sensitivity to reward predicted engagement in restrained eating. Emotional eaters significantly differed from those who did not engage in dysfunctional levels of emotional eating in terms of their emotion regulation, impulsivity, and sensitivity towards reward, and difficulties in …

Introduction: Between Capitalism, The State, And The Grassroots: Mexico's Contribution To A Global Conservation Debate, Nora Haenn, Elizabeth Olson, Jose Martinez-Reyes, Leticia Durand Dec 2013

Introduction: Between Capitalism, The State, And The Grassroots: Mexico's Contribution To A Global Conservation Debate, Nora Haenn, Elizabeth Olson, Jose Martinez-Reyes, Leticia Durand

Jose E. Martinez-Reyes

his introduction situates Mexico in the research on conservation and society, illustrating some nuances and characteristics of the Mexican model of biodiversity conservation in relation to neoliberal economic development and state formation. The paper critiques the way neoliberalism has become a common framework to understand conservation's social practices. Drawing on the ethnographies collected in this special section, the paper considers the importance of state formation and disorganised neoliberalism as intertwined phenomena that explain conservation outcomes. This approach lends itself to the papers' ethnographic descriptions that demonstrate a particular Mexican form of conservation that sits alongside a globalised biodiversity conservation apparatus. …

Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Howard Cromwell Dec 2013

Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Howard Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

The 3 major symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders include 1) social behavioral alterations, 2) problems in communication and 3) higher-order motoric deficits of perseveration and stereotyped movements. Previous work has shown that early developmental exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) alters rat pup social motivation and juvenile rat social recognition/investigation. The present work extends this previous research by examining how perinatal PCB exposure alters motoric functions and communication abilities at different stages of development. Action perseveration was examined using performance measures from a T-maze environment. Communication abilities were evaluated by monitoring ultrasound emission in rat pups during a brief isolation from …
