Intransitivity Shown By An Assignment Problem, Lester G. Telser Dec 2013

Intransitivity Shown By An Assignment Problem, Lester G. Telser

Lester G Telser

Intransitivity Shown by an Assignment Problem The following 3X3 matrix shows the payoff to a pair person i and person j. Their joint return is the term i,j in the matrix. The payoff to person i plus the payoff to person j must be at least as much as their joint return. The dual problem seeks the maximum joint return on the hypothesis that nobody is left without a partner and nobody has more than one partner. The pertinent question is whether the best match can be inferred from the ranks of the payoffs. The answer is no. JEL C71. …

Teaching Patrons To Fish: The Educational Value Of Cancelling Requests For Locally Available Materials, Ruth S. Connell, Tschera H. Connell Dec 2013

Teaching Patrons To Fish: The Educational Value Of Cancelling Requests For Locally Available Materials, Ruth S. Connell, Tschera H. Connell

Ruth S. Connell

Expansive document delivery service for locally available materials is becoming increasingly popular, but is a learning component lost with the implementation of this service? In this study, the authors compare data from two institutions, one that provides an unadvertised document delivery service without instruction, and another that cancels requests for locally available materials with an instructional component. The behavior of each institution's patrons over a 4-year period is analyzed and found to differ at statistically significant levels. These findings will be useful for interlibrary loan policy makers who are considering whether to implement document delivery for locally available items.

Attitudes To Storytelling Among Adult Esl Learners, Mi-Ryoung Kim, Theresa M. Mcgarry Dec 2013

Attitudes To Storytelling Among Adult Esl Learners, Mi-Ryoung Kim, Theresa M. Mcgarry

Theresa M McGarry

This study investigated tertiary second language learners’ attitudes toward storytelling as a classroom activity. Instruction and practice in storytelling were given to 26 international undergraduates for ten weeks. Questionnaires were administered before and after the treatment to assess learners’ interest in storytelling and beliefs about its effectiveness as a learning task. The results of the pre-treatment questionnaire showed that while participants’ interest in storytelling was very low, their expectations of its effectiveness were relatively high. Asian or low proficient participants indicated higher interest than Europeans or high proficient learners. The results of the post-treatment questionnaire showed that participants’ attitudes changed …

The 2012 U.S. Election And Political Messages In Sermons, Daniel Roland, Darin Freeburg Dec 2013

The 2012 U.S. Election And Political Messages In Sermons, Daniel Roland, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

This study sought to determine to what degree clergy members of various denominations mentioned the 2012 Presidential Election in their sermons. A convenience sampling of 1,012 sermon texts prepared and delivered by 141 Protestant Christian clergy members from August 5 through November 4, 2012, were gathered and analyzed for occurrences and type of political messages. Analysis found that political messages were more likely to be given by clergy located in Blue States and least likely to be given by clergy located in Red States. Extensive political messages were more likely delivered by clergy located in Swing States. Clergy members were …

A Cyberconflict Analysis Of Chinese Dissidents Focusing On Civil Society, Mass Incidents And Labour Resistance, Athina Karatzogianni, Andy Robinson

Athina Karatzogianni

This chapter is divided into three main sections. The first discusses the political environment in China to provide the context for dissent and involves a broad stroke on neoliberalism in China with a further discussion on censorship and control in this environment. A second section maps networked dissent in terms of the impact and use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in relation to civil society, mass incidents and labour resistance, and shows how it links to broader resistance in the global mediascape. The final section concentrates on nationalism and the symptomatic repression of ethnic and religious minorities, as well as …

Cursed Resources? Political Conditions And Oil Market Outcomes, Gilbert E. Metcalf, Catherine Wolfram Dec 2013

Cursed Resources? Political Conditions And Oil Market Outcomes, Gilbert E. Metcalf, Catherine Wolfram

Gilbert E. Metcalf

We analyze how a country’s political institutions affect oil production within its borders. We find a pronounced negative relationship between political openness and volatility in oil production, with democratic regimes exhibiting less volatility than more autocratic regimes. This relationship holds across a number of robustness checks including using different measures of political conditions, instrumenting for political conditions and using several measures of production volatility. Political openness also affects other oil market outcomes, including total production as a share of reserves. Our findings have implications both for interpreting the role of institutions in explaining differences in macroeconomic development and for understanding …

Public Assistance Receipt Among Older Youth Exiting Foster Care, Thomas Byrne, Stephen Metraux, Minseop Kim, Dennis P. Culhane, Manuel Moreno, Halil Toros, Max Stevens Dec 2013

Public Assistance Receipt Among Older Youth Exiting Foster Care, Thomas Byrne, Stephen Metraux, Minseop Kim, Dennis P. Culhane, Manuel Moreno, Halil Toros, Max Stevens

Dennis P. Culhane

There is increasing evidence that youth aging out of the foster care system encounter substantial challenges in their transition to adulthood. Receipt of public assistance following discharge from care is one important indicator of the extent to which these youth experience economic difficulties, but prior research on the topic has a number of key limitations. Building on existing research, this study examines public assistance receipt following exit from care among a cohort of 7492 youth who were discharged from an out of home placement in Los Angeles County between 2002 and 2004 and who were aged 16 or …

Validation Of Self-Reported Veteran Status Among Two Sheltered Homeless Populations, Stephen Metraux, Magdi Stino, Dennis P. Culhane

Dennis P. Culhane

Objectives. We assessed the accuracy of self-reported veteran status among sheltered homeless adults to assess the reliability of using self-report to determine the number of veterans in homeless populations and examine whether there are demographic correlates to inaccurate reporting of veteran status.

Methods. Records on 5,860 sheltered adults from Columbus, Ohio, and 16,346 sheltered adults from New York City (NYC) were matched with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) records. We analyzed the agreement between veteran self-reporting and official records using descriptive measures, diagnostic tests, and logistic regression.

Results. The degree of concordance was moderate. Using VA …

Assessing ‘Green Energy Economy’ Policies For Transforming The Building Stock In Shanghai, L. Mundaca T., L. Na, N. Smedby Dec 2013

Assessing ‘Green Energy Economy’ Policies For Transforming The Building Stock In Shanghai, L. Mundaca T., L. Na, N. Smedby

Luis Mundaca

The 2008–2009 global financial crisis triggered ‘Green Energy Economy’ (GEE) policy packages to stimulate green growth in many countries. China soon became a leader and, supported by its 11th Five-Year Plan (2006–2010), devoted approximately one-third of its US$ 647 billion stimulus package to green energy technologies. Since then, numerous policy instruments have been implemented to encourage ‘Green Buildings’. We take the Chinese city of Shanghai as a case study as it has the largest population, urbanization ratio and GDP in China and evaluate the performance of GEE policies targeted at the multi-household building sector. We use a bottom-up modelling tool …

Measuring Progress Towards A ‘Green Energy Economy’: Who Is Really Winning The Race?, L. Mundaca T. Dec 2013

Measuring Progress Towards A ‘Green Energy Economy’: Who Is Really Winning The Race?, L. Mundaca T.

Luis Mundaca

This paper provides the first regional econometric decomposition of CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in eight regions of the world. Using the best publically-available time series data (1971–2011), the analysis examines the key determinants and relationships of the ‘Green Energy Economy’ (GEE) in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Non-OECD Europe and countries from the Former Soviet Union, Oceania, OECD Europe, and OECD North America. The results show that emissions continued to grow across all regions, at rates ranging from 0.1% y-1 to 7% y-1 for the period under analysis. Despite progress in energy intensity (e.g. …

Distinguishing Originality From Creativity In Adhd: An Assessment Of Creative Personality, Self-Perception, And Cognitive Style Among Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Adults, Jean-Pierre J. Issa Dec 2013

Distinguishing Originality From Creativity In Adhd: An Assessment Of Creative Personality, Self-Perception, And Cognitive Style Among Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Adults, Jean-Pierre J. Issa

Jean-Pierre J Issa

Debates over whether Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) relates to high levels of creativity have been hampered by a lack of rigor when defining creativity. The purpose of the present study was to go beyond the rhetoric by empirically investigating creative personality, creative self-perception, and cognitive style among 49 ADHD adults. Comparative analysis to studies of non-ADHD samples revealed distinctive tendencies: A mean group score of 115.71 (SD=18.02) on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI) indicated preferences for originality, nonconformity, paradigm-breaking, and low efficiency that was over one standard deviation higher than average non-ADHD population scores. Combined inattentive/hyperactive-impulsive subtypes (n=20) scored 124.30 (SD=12.96). …

The Ups And Downs Of Knowledge Infrastructures In Science: Implications For Data Management, Christine L. Borgman, Peter Darch, Ashley E. Sands, Jillian C. Wallis, Sharon Traweek Dec 2013

The Ups And Downs Of Knowledge Infrastructures In Science: Implications For Data Management, Christine L. Borgman, Peter Darch, Ashley E. Sands, Jillian C. Wallis, Sharon Traweek

Christine L. Borgman

The promise of technology-enabled, data-intensive scholarship is predicated upon access to knowledge infrastructures that are not yet in place. Scientific data management requires expertise in the scientific domain and in organizing and retrieving complex research objects. The Knowledge Infrastructures project compares data management activities of four large, distributed, multidisciplinary scientific endeavors as they ramp their activities up or down; two are big science and two are small science. Research questions address digital library solutions, knowledge infrastructure concerns, issues specific to individual domains, and common problems across domains. Findings are based on interviews (n=113 to date), ethnography, and other analyses of …

Summed Radiocarbon Calibrations As A Population Proxy: A Critical Evaluation Using A Realistic Simulation Approach, Daniel A. Contreras, John Meadows Dec 2013

Summed Radiocarbon Calibrations As A Population Proxy: A Critical Evaluation Using A Realistic Simulation Approach, Daniel A. Contreras, John Meadows

Daniel A. Contreras

The logic of using summed radiocarbon (14C) calibrations (cumulative probability density functions for large numbers of calibrated 14C dates) as proxies for past populations rests on the presumption of a proportional relationship between population size and the production, and subsequent preservation, recovery, and analysis, of 14C-datable material. Critiques of this approach have generally focused on the various problems that may undermine the validity of this assumption. Here, instead, we presume a perfect correspondence between population size and the quantity of datable material produced at any given time, and explore the question of how well summed 14C calibrations can track demographic …

Interfacing Citizens’ And Institutions’ Practice And Responsibilities For Climate Change Adaptation, Christine Wamsler, Ebba Brink Dec 2013

Interfacing Citizens’ And Institutions’ Practice And Responsibilities For Climate Change Adaptation, Christine Wamsler, Ebba Brink

Christine Wamsler

Climate change poses a serious challenge to sustainable urban development, placing many cities at risk. Climatic conditions are changing to such an extent that the capacity of urban institutions and associated governance systems to deal with climatic extremes and variability is being reduced. New approaches for urban climate change adaptation are thus urgently needed.

There is an increasing consensus that local-level capacities are critical for successful adaptation to climate change and the achievement of sustainable development. However, knowledge about local-level capacities is scarce, and regulatory frameworks are often ambiguous in terms of assigning (complementary) responsibilities for adaptation to institutions and …

Fighting The System? Populist Radical Right Parties And Party System Change, Cas Mudde Dec 2013

Fighting The System? Populist Radical Right Parties And Party System Change, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

This article assesses the impact of populist radical right parties on national party systems in Western Europe. Has the emergence of this new party family changed the interaction of party competition within Western European countries? First, I look at party system change with regard to numerical and numerical–ideological terms. Second, I evaluate the effect populist radical right parties have had on the different dimensions of party systems. Third, I assess the claim that the rise of populist radical right parties has created bipolarizing party system. Fourth, I look at the effect the rise of the populist radical right has had …

How Populist Are The People? Measuring Populist Attitudes In Voters, Agnes Akkerman, Cas Mudde, Andrej Zaslove

Cas Mudde

The sudden and perhaps unexpected appearance of populist parties in the 1990s shows no sign of immediately vanishing. The lion’s share of the research on populism has focused on defining populism, on the causes for its rise and continued success, and more recently on its influence on government and on public policy. Less research has, however, been conducted on measuring populist attitudes among voters. In this article, we seek to fill this gap by measuring populist attitudes and to investigate whether these attitudes can be linked with party preferences. We distinguish three political attitudes: (1) populist attitudes, (2) pluralist attitudes, …

'Ecoterrorism': Terrorist Threat Or Political Ploy?, Cas Mudde, Sivan Hirsch-Hoefler

Cas Mudde

This article examines the phenomenon of “ecoterrorism” from a conceptual and empirical perspective. We explore the political and academic debates over the meaning and use of the term ecoterrorism, and assess the validity of the concept of “ecoterrorism” and of the alleged threat of the Radical Environmentalist and Animal Rights (REAR) movement by analyzing the characteristics of both the movement and its actions. Our analysis shows that the term ecoterrorism should only be used for a small proportion of the actions of REAR movement. Consequently, counterterrorist measures should only target these terrorist minorities, rather than all groups and the broader …

The Functional Compatibility Of An Outdoor Campus Environment And User’S Sense Of Restoration, Zahra Zamani Dec 2013

The Functional Compatibility Of An Outdoor Campus Environment And User’S Sense Of Restoration, Zahra Zamani

Zahra Zamani

Restorative environments reduce stress levels, promote positive moods, enhance recovery, and increase attention spans (Berto, 2005; Hartig, Mang, & Evans, 1991; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989; Ulrich, 1993). A particular characteristic of a restorative environment associates with its degree of compatibility in which the physical environment fits the individual’s preferences functions (Kaplan, 1995). “Grisly Man, Gods, And Monsters,”, Kirby Farrell Dec 2013

“Grisly Man, Gods, And Monsters,”, Kirby Farrell

kirby farrell

“Grisly Man, Gods, and Monsters” by Kirby Farrell,
Werner Herzog’s documentary Grizzly Man (2005) examines the fatal infatuation of Timothy William Dexter (Treadwell) with Alaskan grizzly bears.

A failed actor and recovering addict, Dexter reinvented himself as
Timothy Treadwell, the “grizzly man,” using the camera and his charismatic
personality to promote a vision of the lone hero taming a savage but
mysteriously – even religiously - “perfect” nature. In 2004 a grizzly mauled
and ate the increasingly reckless Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Hugenaard.

Treadwell’s self-exposure to the bears acted out sacrificial and suicidal
themes and can be understood in …

Pedagogy For Critical Reflection In Librarianship: A Suggested Methodology And Syllabus For Teaching Autoethnography And Self-Reflection, Richard A. Stoddart Dec 2013

Pedagogy For Critical Reflection In Librarianship: A Suggested Methodology And Syllabus For Teaching Autoethnography And Self-Reflection, Richard A. Stoddart

Rick A Stoddart

Academic librarianship has an intimate association with narratives and stories in their traditional role in curating, caring for, and making collections accessible. Librarians also experience the intricacies and challenges of narrative inquiry through the qualitative research they undertake, oral histories they gather, reflective teaching practices they facilitate, and oral-traditions they interact with. Despite these intersections with reflection and narrative, academic librarianship, (and library sciences as a whole), have not fully incorporated their own narrative(s) within their professional practice(s). Academic librarianship has the ability but not the spaces to critically reflect in a holistic manner. Shadiow (2013) encourages us all to …
