Continuation In Us Foreign Policy: An Offensive Realist Perspective, Bledar Prifti Oct 2014

Continuation In Us Foreign Policy: An Offensive Realist Perspective, Bledar Prifti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of US foreign policy that aims at maintaining its regional hegemonic status and preventing the emergence of another regional hegemon by implementing the offshore balancing strategy. US intervention during the 2003 Iraq War, strained US-Iran relationship, and the establishment of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in early 2014 compel a reevaluation of US foreign policy. Two major claims of this dissertation include: (1) US foreign policy is consistent with offensive realist theoretical claims; and (2) US foreign policy is characterized by continuity when it comes to issues related to America's strategic …

Great Expectations: The Mismatched Selves Of A Beginning Teacher, Michael Dicicco, Laura Sabella, Robert Jordan, Kate Boney, Pat Jones

The Qualitative Report

As university supervisors we were alerted to heightened emotional responses (i.e., crying, not eating, not sleeping), expressed by paid-interns in an accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) cohort of STEM practitioners. While research has shown teachers prepared in alternative programs tend to have greater difficulties (Darling-Hammond, 1990), few studies have examined alternatively prepared teachers’ beliefs and expectations about teaching and learning (Tigchlaar, Brouwer, & Vermut, 2010; Good et al., 2006). This inquiry describes one paid-intern’s teaching expectations during her first year of teaching. In this phenomenological case study, part of a larger cross-case study, we collected data from interviews, …

Breaking The Silence Of Mainstream Teachers' Attitude Towards Inclusive Education In The Bahamas: High School Teachers' Perceptions, Janelle Cambridge-Johnson, Yvonne Hunter-Johnson, Norissa G. L. Newton

The Qualitative Report

There has been a paradigm shift globally regarding the adoption of inclusive education policies and procedures. However, teachers still have varying views, anxieties, and preconceive misconceptions about the successful implementation of inclusive education practices in the general education classroom. This study utilized a qualitative approach to provide an informative exploration of teachers’ attitudes toward inclusive education and its implementation, possible factors that influence teachers' attitude, and recommendations for promoting best practices in inclusive education. Data was collected utilizing semi-structured interviews from eight teachers throughout the New Providence District in the Bahamas. The results of the study revealed that teachers generally …

Expanding The Possibilities Of Qualitative Inquiry: A Review Of Critical Autoethnograpy: Intersecting Cultural Identities In Everyday Life, Tasha R. Rennels Oct 2014

Expanding The Possibilities Of Qualitative Inquiry: A Review Of Critical Autoethnograpy: Intersecting Cultural Identities In Everyday Life, Tasha R. Rennels

The Qualitative Report

Critical Autoethnography: Intersecting Cultural Identities in Everyday Life is a groundbreaking collection in which Boylorn and Orbe expand the possibilities of qualitative inquiry by including 13 page-turning chapters that merge autoethnography with critical theory to situate lived experiences within larger systems of power. Throughout this review, I provide a brief overview of the collection, describe the strengths in terms of writing and organization, as well as critique the pragmatic potential. I conclude by describing how and why this collection is a valuable resource for those who practice qualitative methodology for the sake of social change.

Citizen Confidence In The Public Service: An Examination Of Established And Emerging Democracies In North America And Eurasia, Nurgul Ryskulovna Aitalieva

Nurgul R. Aitalieva, Ph.D.

How do levels of confidence in the public service differ across countries? Are these attitudes about the public service determined by similar individual-level attributes across countries? Do country-level correlates explain variation between countries in citizen attitudes toward the public service? Data from the 2005-2009 World Values Survey for 21 North American and Eurasian countries, in addition to aggregate-level measures of national context, are analyzed using multilevel binary logistic regression. The study shows that there is a significant amount of variation in the confidence attitudes not only within each country but also across countries. Citizens of Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Finland …

Breaking All The Rules: Lock-In At The Sciences Library, Brett Cloyd, Sara Scheib

Brett Cloyd

Imagine forty first-year students at the library after hours, yelling and racing through the stacks, pulling books off the shelf before sprinting to another section. It might sound like a librarian’s worst nightmare, but it was all according to plan. In an effort to help overcome library anxiety and give our students a fun introduction to academic libraries, we broke all the rules to develop a Library Lock-In event. This collaborative effort supported by the Library, Residence Life, and the Honors Program turned out to be very successful and was one of the most well-attended programs offered to the LLCs. …

Academic Library Outreach To Minority Students: The Role The Library Plays In Meeting The Needs Of Minority Students At Francis Marion University, Bernadette Johnson Oct 2014

Academic Library Outreach To Minority Students: The Role The Library Plays In Meeting The Needs Of Minority Students At Francis Marion University, Bernadette Johnson

South Carolina Libraries

As college student populations nationwide become more racially and ethnically diverse, it is imperative that academic libraries provide services and resources to meet the changing needs.

In a span of nearly 20 years, Francis Marion University’s student population has shifted from 74% white and 24% black to nearly 50% black. Because of this, James A. Rogers Library at FMU is challenged with meeting these changing needs.

In efforts to diversify its services, James A. Rogers Library gives biennial surveys to FMU students to assess student needs and perception of the library and in 2010, the library created an African-American collection.

During the Spring Semester 2014 at Winthrop University an E-book survey was administered to Winthrop faculty, staff, and students. The objectives of the survey were (1) to inform the patrons that the library does have e-books available to them, (2) to ascertain if they have used any of the e-books for their research, (3) to determine which format, print or e-book, is their primary preference and (4) which format do they think is most important as part of the permanent library collection. The results, including comments from the faculty, staff and students, were compiled and are presented in this paper.

Good News For A Change, Eric Shoaf Oct 2014

Good News For A Change, Eric Shoaf

South Carolina Libraries

Technology, user needs and expectations, and the evolving role of the library in society are all driving a pace of change not seen previously in the library world. As library workers confront this environment of flux, many seek to understand the change process and their response to its pervasiveness. This article adapts a model of change developed in a different sphere and proposes its use in the library environment in order to assist library workers and provide a process that can alleviate some of the stress of change.
