College Lectures-The Minister As An Executive, Charles C. Chapman Oct 2014

College Lectures-The Minister As An Executive, Charles C. Chapman

Charles C. Chapman College Lectures

In this lecture Chapman compares the organization of a church to that of a business, and therefore admonishes ministers to act as executives and to utilize similar techniques to organize and maintain their church. He urges ministers to allow members to assume as many leadership roles as possible and to always adapt his methods to the unique qualities of his particular congregation.

Southeast Asian Refugees In Western Massachusetts: Seen But Not Heard, James A. Hafner, Jeannine Muldoon, Elizabeth Brewer

James A Hafner

The United States has a long and valued tradition of receiving people from other lands as a result of social and political turmoil. This policy has been reaffirmed frequently in the last quarter century with the arrival of refugees from such geographically diverse locations as Eastern Europe, Cuba, Southeast Asia, and Central America. Perhaps, Southeast Asians have experienced greater national and personal tragedy than any other group of refugees arriving in this country in recent memory. It is specifically this population and their resettlement and adjustment to life in Western Massachusetts which is the subject of this report. These issues …

Salt, Seasons And Sampans: Riverine Trade And Trqansport In Central Thailand, James Hafner Oct 2014

Salt, Seasons And Sampans: Riverine Trade And Trqansport In Central Thailand, James Hafner

James A Hafner

Introduction Since Sir John Bowring first recorded these impressions of the central plain of Thailand in the middle of the last, century, time has unalterably changed the context of his account, though not entirely its accuracy. The ‘feracious jungle’ which covered much of the lower central plain in Bowring's time began to disappear under the plow of the Thai peasant farmer in the latter decades of the last century. By 1900 the landscape had been almost entirely converted to an intensive system of irrigated wet-padi production for export. The establishrnent and growth of this commercial agricultural economy has resulted in …

Completing Your Story: Explaining Your 'Colorful' Career History To Potential Employers, Keri Schwab Oct 2014

Completing Your Story: Explaining Your 'Colorful' Career History To Potential Employers, Keri Schwab

Keri Schwab

KATIE, A 26 year-old volunteer coordinator for an educational nonprofit, was on her fifth "job" since graduating from college and in the process of applying for a sixth. Her resume read like a magazine article for 20-somethings: Six jobs to try before 30! She had served as an AmeriCorps volunteer, an international volunteer, worked a seasonal job with a film institute, completed a contract for an environmental group, and finally settled into a volunteer coordinator position. Next up, she was applying for an outreach position with an environmental non-profit. Well qualified and with excellent references, her biggest challenge was explaining …

Expectancy Violation Theory, Caleb Fugate Oct 2014

Expectancy Violation Theory, Caleb Fugate

Communication Student Scholarship

Whether someone is standing too close when conversing or an unexpected kiss because it is someone else’s cultural norm, expectancy violations happen often. Expectancy Violation Theory understands communication as an exchange of content that violates another person’s expectations. This violation is then perceived by the violated person as either good or bad. Understanding the different aspects of this theory will shed light on how people react when their expectations have been violated. To understand this theory this essay will describe Burgoon’s understanding of expectancy and violation, as well as give an example of an expectation violation.

The Cost Of Moving Optimally: Kinematic Path Selection., Dinant A Kistemaker, Jeremy D Wong, Paul L Gribble Oct 2014

The Cost Of Moving Optimally: Kinematic Path Selection., Dinant A Kistemaker, Jeremy D Wong, Paul L Gribble

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

It is currently unclear whether the brain plans movement kinematics explicitly or whether movement paths arise implicitly through optimization of a cost function that takes into account control and/or dynamic variables. Several cost functions are proposed in the literature that are very different in nature (e.g., control effort, torque change, and jerk), yet each can predict common movement characteristics. We set out to disentangle predictions of the different variables using a combination of modeling and empirical studies. Subjects performed goal-directed arm movements in a force field (FF) in combination with visual perturbations of seen hand position. This FF was designed …

After Fukushima: The Equivalence Of Catastrophes, Jean-Luc Nancy Oct 2014

After Fukushima: The Equivalence Of Catastrophes, Jean-Luc Nancy

Philosophy & Theory

In this book, the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy examines the nature of catastrophes in the era of globalization and technology. Can a catastrophe be an isolated occurrence? Is there such a thing as a “natural” catastrophe when all of our technologies—nuclear energy, power supply, water supply—are necessarily implicated, drawing together the biological, social, economic, and political? Nancy examines these questions and more. Exclusive to this English edition are two interviews with Nancy conducted by Danielle Cohen-Levinas and Yuji Nishiyama and Yotetsu Tonaki.

Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Science fiction has long imagined a workforce reshaped by robots, but the increasingly common instantiation of intelligent systems in business is much more mundane. Beyond the utopian and dystopian hype of increased efficiencies and job displacement, how do we understand what disruptions intelligent systems will have on the workforce?

Understanding Fair Labor Practices In A Networked Age, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Understanding Fair Labor Practices In A Networked Age, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Unionization emerged as a way of protecting labor rights when society shifted from an agricultural ecosystem to one shaped by manufacturing and industrial labor. New networked work complicates the organizing mechanisms that are inherent to unionization. How then do we protect laborers from abuse, poor work conditions, and discrimination?

Disaggregating Input-Output Models, Xueting Zhao

Regional Research Institute Technical Documents

This Technical Document describes the steps to disaggregate an industry sector in an I-O table using Python. A disaggregation method that based on weight factors is used in this document. The calculation has three parts. The first part is to calculate the disaggregated input matrix DIM, which represents all the input from common sectors into the new sectors. The second part is to calculate the disaggregated output matrix DOM, which represents all possible output weights of new sectors into common sectors. The last part is to calculate the intra matrix DINM, which represents the allocation of intra-industry sales in the …

Land Tenure And Disasters: Strengthening And Clarifying Land Rights In Disaster Risk Reduction And Post-Disaster Programming, Cynthia Caron, Gayatri Menon, Lauren Kuritz

Sustainability and Social Justice

USAid Brief.

Background:
Disaster-induced displacement is on the rise. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (Yonetani 2013; see Figure 1) estimates that in 2012 alone, 32.4 million people were displaced as a direct result of natural disasters or because they faced an acute threat of being affected by a natural disaster. These figures do not include populations affected by slower onset disasters such as drought and sea-level rise.

In addition to geophysical natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, over the last 30 years the number of climate-related disasters has increased (IPCC 2013; World Bank 2013a). Experts believe that such events …
