A Meta-Analytic Test Of Redundancy And Relative Importance Of The Dark Triad And Five Factor Model Of Personality, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Donelson R. Forsyth, George C. Banks, Paul A. Story, Charles D. White Oct 2014

A Meta-Analytic Test Of Redundancy And Relative Importance Of The Dark Triad And Five Factor Model Of Personality, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Donelson R. Forsyth, George C. Banks, Paul A. Story, Charles D. White

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We examined the relationships between Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy—the three traits of the Dark Triad (DT)—and the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality. The review identified 310 independent samples drawn from 215 sources and yielded information pertaining to global trait relationships and facet-level relationships. We used meta-analysis to examine (a) the bivariate relations between the DT and the five global traits and 30 facets of the FFM; (b) the relative importance of each of the FFM global traits in predicting DT; and (c) the relationship between the DT and FFM facets identified in translational models of narcissism and psychopathy. These …

Explaining Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Use Of High-Volume Hospitals: Decision-Making Complexity And Local Hospital Environments, Karl Kronebusch, Bradford H. Gray, Mark Schlesinger Oct 2014

Explaining Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Use Of High-Volume Hospitals: Decision-Making Complexity And Local Hospital Environments, Karl Kronebusch, Bradford H. Gray, Mark Schlesinger

Publications and Research

Racial/ethnic minorities are less likely to use higher-quality hospitals than whites. We propose that a higher level of informationrelated complexity in their local hospital environments compounds the effects of discrimination and more limited access to services, contributing to racial/ethnic disparities in hospital use. While minorities live closer than whites to high-volume hospitals, minorities also face greater choice complexity and live in neighborhoods with lower levels of medical experience. Our empirical results reveal that it is generally the overall context associated with proximity, choice complexity, and local experience, rather than differential sensitivity to these factors, that provides a partial explanation of …

Student Research: Study Into Scooter Use, Overste, L Moir, Janet Richmond, J Millsteed Oct 2014

Student Research: Study Into Scooter Use, Overste, L Moir, Janet Richmond, J Millsteed

Janet E Richmond PhD

Motorised mobility scooters (“scooters”) enable people with mobility difficulties to engage in community participation; however scooter use has lead to many accidents resulting in injury or death to the user and bystanders. At present there are few assessments available to screen people for scooter use. Additionally, formal assessment is not required prior to commencement of scooter use. The aim of the research study was to identify the performance skills required for safe use of scooters in the community, and to identify if a difference exists in skills required for three-wheeled and four-wheeled models of scooters.

Sequencing The Presentation Of Grammar Items To Attract Student Interest, Arshad Abd Samad Oct 2014

Sequencing The Presentation Of Grammar Items To Attract Student Interest, Arshad Abd Samad

Arshad Abd Samad

The teaching of grammar is a challenging task as teachers need to present technical information about the language in such a way that would interest and attract the attention of students. In addition to the lesson itself, the presentation sequence of grammatical items as in the grammar syllabus can also influence how well students respond. Teachers often decide to present and focus on grammatical items to beginner, intermediate and advanced level students based on criteria such as level of difficulty and order of acquisition. Biber (1998), however, proposed that grammar should be presented according to narrative, informational and interactive text …

Advocating For Advocacy: How Academia Affects Students' Civic And Political Engagement Outcomes, Chandler S. Johnson Oct 2014

Advocating For Advocacy: How Academia Affects Students' Civic And Political Engagement Outcomes, Chandler S. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the relationship between classroom interaction and students' behavioral outcomes. To investigate this relationship, the research applies the theory of planned behavior to identify civic engagement outcomes produced by teaching and classroom exposure. The results indicate that there is no significant relationship between the forms of teaching (i.e., active or passive) and behavior outcomes (e.g., self-efficacy). Nevertheless, results supported previous literature by showing that attitudes, self-efficacy, and subjective norms can predict behavioral intent. The results also showed a possible fatigue effect due to overexposure to civic and political engagement in the classroom.

Effect Of Food Aid Delivery Mode On Food Production In Recipient Nation, Steven Marc Wolf Oct 2014

Effect Of Food Aid Delivery Mode On Food Production In Recipient Nation, Steven Marc Wolf

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide quantitative evidence linking food aid delivery mode and its correlation with food production in the recipient nation. Debate over the best way to provide food aid to developing countries inspired this study. The three delivery modes used for this study were direct transfer, locally purchase, and triangular purchase. Food aid data was available from The World Food Programme and food production indices were available from The World Bank. Correlations between the independent variable (food aid quantity by delivery mode) and dependent variable (food production index) were examined using the coefficient of determination, …

Film As Nation Building: The Uae Goes Into The Movie Business, Alia Yunis

All Works

For the past 10 years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been aggressively pioneering at a national, government-financed level the production of local films while also courting Hollywood producers as a financier and production center. As a young, wealthy nation still conflicted about how it defines itself to itself and how it wishes to be defined outside its border--and as a country with no previous history in the visual arts of any kind and no movie-going culture until the late 1990s--the UAE presents a unique approach to the building of a film industry, one that is not grounded in previous …

Tie Formation And Cohesiveness In A Loosely Organized Group: Knitting Together, Doris A. Palmer, Atsuko Kawakami Oct 2014

Tie Formation And Cohesiveness In A Loosely Organized Group: Knitting Together, Doris A. Palmer, Atsuko Kawakami

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this paper is to explore the elements of tie formation and group cohesiveness in a loosely organized group with no clearly stated goal, commitment, or purpose. We employed participant observation and personal interviews to discover factors related to group cohesiveness. With inductive approach based on our thick description of the study sites, such as meeting space and group conversations, we found the nature of relationships within these groups is affected by how each group was started and organized. Having an expressive leader may increase group cohesiveness in a loosely organized group, especially when the leader has a …

Music, Musicians And Barroom Aggression, James C. Roberts, Kimberly Mattern

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between live bands and the music they play and aggression in barrooms catering to young, college-aged patrons. Twenty musicians representing 14 different cover bands playing in licensed drinking establishments throughout Northeast Pennsylvania were interviewed about their influence on the behaviors of bar patrons. Content analysis of completed interviews revealed several important findings. Most notably, each of the musicians interviewed in this study reported being able to control and manipulate patron behavior, not just through the music they play, but also through their stage presence, their physical appearance and attire, and …

Enhancing The Experience: A Multiple Case Study Of Students' Experiences Using Arts-Based Techniques In Learning Qualitative Research, Sheryl L. Chatfield, Robin Cooper, Elizabeth Holden, Kelly Macias

The Qualitative Report

This paper represents the third in a series of reports published in TQR in which authors explore students’ experiences learning to conduct qualitative research. Prior researchers have suggested that emotional and experiential elements of the learning experience are key for students learning to conduct qualitative research; the use of arts-based approaches may help address these priorities. We gave students in a conflict analysis and resolution degree program opportunities to conduct qualitative research using either an arts-based or traditional approach to analysis. We identified several ways that arts enhanced the learning experience for students, and discuss considerations for instructors or others …
