The Complicated ‘Colours’ Of Rhythm: A Study Of Capetonian’S Battle For Identity Through The Hip Hop Movement In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Joseph Thomas Dover

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project delves into the Cape Town Hip Hop scene in an attempt to uncover how it is an inclusive and empowering space that allows individuals to deconstruct and reconstruct individual and group identities in order to subvert colonial narratives. In order to uncover the power of Hip Hop this project uses 3 interviews with individuals intimately connected to the Hip Hop scene and reviews an abundance of literature surrounding the topic. The history of ‘coloured’ as a racial classification is analysed alongside with other research and is placed within the context of contemporary Capetonian Hip Hop in order to …

On Air With The Community An Exploration Of Five Community Radio Stations In The Western Cape, Kelsey Warren Oct 2014

On Air With The Community An Exploration Of Five Community Radio Stations In The Western Cape, Kelsey Warren

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The closing of apartheid in South Africa was brought by new measures for democracy in 1994. Community radio stations were seen as measures for local communication and involvement in giving different communities voices that has formerly been lost. This paper attempts to discover the relevance of community radio stations twenty years after democracy and just how citizens are participating.

The paper begins with a review of history of community radio on different levels around the world through the use of literature. The arguments made centralize around the necessity of specialized community stations, the effect of community engagement, the lack of …

Aggression Exposure To Parental Violence And Resilience As Predictors Of Dating Violence Perpetration In Female College Students, Jessica A. Bodkins-Kite Oct 2014

Aggression Exposure To Parental Violence And Resilience As Predictors Of Dating Violence Perpetration In Female College Students, Jessica A. Bodkins-Kite

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the proposed study was to examine a model of relationship violence that predicts physical dating violence perpetration. The I3 theory states that instigation and impellance are positively related to aggression whereas inhibition is negatively related to aggression, such that an individual is less likely to be aggressive when inhibition is higher than instigation and impellance; however, an individual is more likely to be aggressive when inhibition is lower than instigation and impellance (Finkel, DeWall, Slotter, McNulty, Pond, & Atkins, 2012). Furthermore, individuals who have been exposed to parental violence are more likely to perpetrate dating violence …

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock Oct 2014

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Existing research has established that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youths experience higher rates of mental illness. However, fewer studies have examined what influences these disparate outcomes. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory suggests that social factors, such as social support, and internal resources, such as self-esteem, are important potential moderators that may buffer the detrimental effects of stigma-related stress for sexual minority individuals. This study examined the potential protective effects peer support, parent support, school support, and self-esteem in adolescence in explaining mental health disparities between sexual minority and heterosexual young adults. Mental health outcomes included alcohol consumption, depressive symptoms, …

The Role Of Leader Support For Safety Within The Leader Justice-Safety Performance Relationship, Benjamin R. Kaufman Oct 2014

The Role Of Leader Support For Safety Within The Leader Justice-Safety Performance Relationship, Benjamin R. Kaufman

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research indicates that leadership is a potent antecedent of safety performance and outcomes. Specifically, quality of leadership has been identified as a critical target for occupational safety research. The current studies focused on employee perceptions of leader justice, operationalized in general (Study 1) and safety-specific contexts (Study 2), and leader support for safety, and investigated their interactions in predicting safety performance. Only one published study has explored the direct impact of leader justice on safety and no previous research has contextualized leader justice in safety-specific terms. It was postulated that general and safety-specific leader justices and support for safety would …

Interactive 3-D Software In Aircraft Rescue And Fire Fighting Training, Mary K. Gorman Ph.D., Rita "Rene" I. Herron Ph.D.

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

As the nexus between aviation, fire science, and emergency management becomes increasingly more complex, technology can be used to augment training and avoid risk while maintaining authenticity with situational reality. In Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF), the manner in which the learning content is effectively imparted to the student-professional can make all the difference in a successful emergency response. The interactive 3-D software developed exclusively for Dallas/Fort Worth Fire Training Research Center (DFW FTRC) is part of a curriculum designed to educated and train ARFF professionals in life-saving strategies and tactics. Through a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, the world’s …

How Games Work: Exploring The Instructional Design Of Diablo Iii, Carly Finseth

Carly Finseth

This presentation describes a portion of a three-part case study designed to research the instructional patterns that occur within role-playing games (RPGs). It presents a set of nine heuristics for learning in RPGs and analyzes how and where those heuristics occur within the game Diablo III. The findings from the study include an overview of a cyclical learning pattern that occurs with RPGs, as well as theoretical and practical implication for both industry and academic contexts.

Adding Up To Success? Assessing Freshman Skills In Information Literacy, Susan Archambault Sep 2014

Adding Up To Success? Assessing Freshman Skills In Information Literacy, Susan Archambault

Susan Gardner Archambault

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) designed a 4-module online tutorial to meet the information literacy outcomes associated with a First Year Seminar course. The four modules that comprise the tutorial (Starting Your Assignment, Types of Information, Finding and Evaluating Information, and Using Information Ethically) were integrated into each First Year Seminar course through Blackboard, the university's Learning Management System (LMS). After completing each tutorial module, students were also required to take a quiz. The effectiveness of the tutorial and quizzes was assessed through a mixed methods approach using direct and indirect measures. Overall areas of weakness are were evaluated and addressed, …

An Assessment Of Goal-Free Evaluation: Case Studies Of Four Goal-Free Evaluations, Brandon Youker, Allyssa Ingraham, Nicholas Bayer

Brandon W. Youker Ph.D

This article provides a descriptive review of four goal-free program evaluations (GFE). GFE is an evaluation model where the independent evaluator is intentionally screened from the program’s stated goals and objectives in hopes of reducing potential goal-related tunnel vision. The findings from these GFE case studies are focused in three areas: (1) elements of the programs that were evaluated and their existing evaluation contexts (e.g., pre-evaluation conditions, size of evaluation budget), (2) design of the GFEs (e.g., screening method, data collection methods), and (3) expertise of the goal-free evaluators (e.g., training, degrees attained). The findings indicate that, when employed, GFE …

Exploring The Various Interpretations Of "Test Bias", Russell Warne, Myeongsun Yoon, Chris Price

Russell T Warne

Test bias is a hotly debated topic in society, especially as it relates to diverse groups of examinees who often score low on standardized tests. However, the phrase “test bias” has a multitude of interpretations that many people are not aware of. In this article, we explain five different meanings of “test bias” and summarize the empirical and theoretical evidence related to each interpretation. The five meanings are as follows: (a) mean group differences, (b) differential predictive validity, (c) differential item functioning, (d) differing factor structures of tests, and (e) unequal consequences of test use for various groups. We explain …

Faculty Status, Tenure, And Professional Identity: A Pilot Study Of Academic Librarians In New England, Shin Freedman

Shin Freedman

abstract: Faculty status, tenure, and professional identity have been long-lasting issues for academic librarians for nearly forty years, yet there is little agreement on the benefits of faculty status. This paper examines faculty status and tenure for academic librarians and presents the results of a survey inquiry into professional identity, current and expected roles, views on faculty status and tenure, and personnel status of academic librarians in the New England area. The study affirms that 45 percent of the respondents have some combination of faculty status, tenure status, and faculty plus tenure status, and that 65 percent of academic librarians …

Gearing Up For Fedora 4, Virginia A. Dressler, Joe Corall

Virginia A Dressler

At Kent State University Libraries, we are gearing up for a migration to Fedora 4 with our existing digital collections. Using the D2RQ platform, we are transforming the extended Dublin Core elements of the current collections and creating a mapping file. Currently each collection has a separate SQL database, and the migration will enable a higher level of connectivity.

Applying Concepts Of Linked Data To Local Digital Collections To Enhance Access And Searchability, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

Plans are currently underway at the Kent State University Library to migrate digital objects onto a different content management system to address the needs of growing collections. The plan will involve shifting to a framework to enhance all current digital collections, as well as anticipating the growth of future projects and formats. The poster will touch in particular on the topic of enhancing search capabilities in this new framework, through use of a single, cross collection searchable index and also discuss the benefits of applying Linked Data concepts. Two current digital collections that will be highlighted and discussed in the …

Cost Effectiveness Of Open Access Publications, Jevin D. West, Ted C. Bergstrom, Carl T. Bergstrom Sep 2014

Cost Effectiveness Of Open Access Publications, Jevin D. West, Ted C. Bergstrom, Carl T. Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Open access publishing has been proposed as one possible solution to the serials crisis—the rapidly growing subscription prices in scholarly journal publishing. However, open access publishing can present economic pitfalls as well, such as excessive article processing charges. We discuss the decision that an author faces when choosing to submit to an open access journal. We develop an interactive tool to help authors compare among alternative open access venues and thereby get the most for their article processing charges. (JEL I2, C1, A1)

The Relational Ecology Of Identification: How Organizational Identification Emerges When Individuals Hold Divergent Values, Marya Besharov Sep 2014

The Relational Ecology Of Identification: How Organizational Identification Emerges When Individuals Hold Divergent Values, Marya Besharov

Marya Besharov

This research builds on theory about how identification develops when members differ in which organizational values they hold to be important. It is relatively well established that conflict and dis-identification arise under such conditions. In the socially responsible retail company I studied, in contrast, I found identification as well as dis-identification. Both outcomes emerged from members’ interactions with others whose values and behaviors differed from their own. Identification arose when managers interpreted and enacted organizational values for frontline employees by developing integrative solutions, removing ideology, and routinizing ideology. Dis-identification developed in the absence of these practices. The resulting process model …

This report is the second part of a two-part series. The first part is called The 2013 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness: Part 1 of the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress and was published in November 2013. The Part 1 report provides estimates of homelessness based on the Point-in-Time (PIT) count data gathered by communities throughout the country on a single night in January. The estimates are provided at the national-, state-, and CoC-levels. New to the 2013 AHAR is information on unaccompanied homeless children and youth and chronically homeless people in families.
