Colin Powell, Torture And Terror, Jonathan Cohen
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
This paper will address evidence linking the former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, to the hotly-debated torture program of the George W. Bush (GWB) administration. The evidence in this paper suggests that the policies and practices of torture in the War on Terror were planned and authorized by General Powell and other senior officials in the GWB administration.
The Powell Doctrine Of Foreign Policy: International Development As Homeland Security, Katherine Blaisdell
The Powell Doctrine Of Foreign Policy: International Development As Homeland Security, Katherine Blaisdell
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Despite mixed response by voters to the idea of sending tax dollars to other countries for any purpose, administrations since Franklin Roosevelt have used foreign aid as part of their economic and foreign policy. The Bush administration and the Department of State under Colin Powell's leadership were no exception, and even raised foreign aid levels. However, many (see, for example, Mertus, 2008) argue that the Bush administration's primary goal was creating a strategic power balance and stable world system, with alleviation of poverty and disease being just a side effect to be used for public relations advantages. In his most …

On Shaky Grounds: Reasons Behind The Failure To Adhere To The "Powell Doctrine" In The 2003 Iraq Invasion, Sasha Anderson
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Why did we go to war with Iraq and what are we still doing there? This question is one of our most pressing foreign policy issues and continues to be hotly debated by politicians, journalists and citizens. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was executed in a strikingly different fashion than the strategy used in an earlier conflict with Iraq, the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991. Rather than follow a strategy consisting of clear goals, overwhelming force and a predetermined exit strategy, the US military blundered into Iraq in 2003 without a way to measure victory and without a plan …

Bridging The Food Gap: Addressing The Feasibility And Applicability Of Three Key Traditionally Western Food Preservation Techniques To Improving Household Food Security And Reducing Malnutrition In Uganda., Eva K. Baguma
Capstone Collection
Food wastage is the leading cause of food insecurity and malnutrition in the world today. A huge amount of food gets wasted along the food supply chain from the time it is harvested to the time it gets to our plates. A significant amount of the food wasted happens in the home as well as on farms, in restaurants and supermarkets across the globe.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, many families and communities are facing severe food shortages due to lack of electricity for refrigeration, poor storage facilities and limited access to markets.
However for many centuries, different cultures around the world …

Canada And The 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Steven J. Seligman
Canada And The 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Steven J. Seligman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The 2001 United Nations World Conference against Racism (WCAR) was one of the most controversial United Nations events of the post-Cold War era. Major issues on the agenda included the Middle East, the question of reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism, and the rights of indigenous peoples. Utilizing interviews with government and non-governmental actors as well as archival material, this dissertation examines Canada’s preparations for, and participation at, the WCAR as a case study to explore key theoretical debates about the Canadian foreign policy-making process. At the international level, Canada was an active participant during the multilateral negotiations …

Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Media convergence has changed how we receive and process information. No longer are we passive spectators, but we are part of the media we consume. Because of the explosion of technology since the turn of the century and a new definition of spectatorship, producers of media can no longer control how their messages are received; they have to engage their audience and listen to feedback in order to remain functioning. Fellow peers serve as informants or as a new source of media. This also affects our individual identities, which shapes our cultural identity. Social media enables us to present ourselves …

On “Trafficking And Health”, Dominique Stewart
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
This paper discusses the article "Trafficking and Health" by Joanna Busza, Sarah Castle, and Aisse Diarra. Human trafficking is unfortunately addressed by many political systems as a migration issue ‐‐ to be dealt with by restricting the rights of migrants, tightening border controls, etc. However, as we see in this article it is more of a health and human rights issue than anything else. Addressing a problem with the wrong diagnosis does nothing to solve it and oftentimes exacerbates it, and human trafficking is no exception to this. But with the right approaches, the damage caused by trafficking can be …

Having The Last Word, But Losing The Culture Wars: Mainstream Press Coverage Of A Canceled Evangelical Benediction., Rick Clifton Moore
Rick Clifton Moore
This study examines how mainstream news media reported the withdrawal of a popular pastor from the 2013 Obama inaugural ceremony. Louie Giglio was originally chosen for a role in the event but relinquished his position when focus was placed on a sermon he once delivered about homosexuality. Analysis of framing and sourcing of the stories raises serious questions about the role media played in reporting about this skirmish, which is clearly part of the larger culture wars.
Seeing And Not Believing: Concern For Visual Culture In The Humanist, Rick Clifton Moore
Seeing And Not Believing: Concern For Visual Culture In The Humanist, Rick Clifton Moore
Rick Clifton Moore
A recent study of a magazine distributed by a powerful conservative Christian group determined the organization showed strong concern for “visual culture.” The publication directed its readers on how to understand the seen world. The present study analyzes a periodical of an avowedly secular group to understand how they might manifest similar or different concerns. On the whole, the content of the magazine called The Humanist appears to indicate that visual culture is as important to agnostics as it is to theists.

Planning Data Management Education Initiatives: Process, Feedback, And Future Directions, Chris Eaker
Planning Data Management Education Initiatives: Process, Feedback, And Future Directions, Chris Eaker
UT Libraries Faculty: Peer-Reviewed Publications
Educating researchers in sound data management skills is a hot topic in today’s data intensive research world. Librarians across the country and the world are taking the lead in offering this training to their campus research communities. In Fall, 2013, the Data Curation Librarian at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, held a one-day “Data Management Basics” Workshop geared towards graduate students in engineering and science disciplines based on the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum. Students were asked to complete a pre-workshop survey and a series of seven post-module surveys throughout the day. This article discusses the results of the …

By the time you read this column this story may have lost all it relevance but it has made a bit of a dust up lately and so I think it deserves some further treatment. Doh!
Punishment And Inclusion: Race, Membership, And The Limits Of American Liberalism, Andrew Dilts
Punishment And Inclusion: Race, Membership, And The Limits Of American Liberalism, Andrew Dilts
Law
At the start of the twenty-first century, 1 percent of the U.S. population is behind bars. An additional 3 percent is on parole or probation. In all but two states, incarcerated felons cannot vote, and in three states felon disenfranchisement is for life. More than 5 million adult Americans cannot vote because of a felony-class criminal conviction, meaning that more than 2 percent of otherwise eligible voters are stripped of their political rights. Nationally, fully a third of the disenfranchised are African American, effectively disenfranchising 8 percent of all African Americans in the United States. In Alabama, Kentucky, and Florida, …
