Two Essays On Governance At The National And Corporate Level, Laura Savory Miller Dec 2014

Two Essays On Governance At The National And Corporate Level, Laura Savory Miller

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

ESSAY 1
We examine the effect of governance environment on the composition of a country's external capital structure, specifically foreign equity investment. In addition to the absolute quality of the host country's governance environment, we consider the host country's governance quality relative to that of the source (investor) country. Unlike previous studies, which utilize country totals, we examine foreign investment positions between pairs of individual countries. Our sample includes 3,891 bilateral investment positions among 49 source countries and 69 host countries for years 2009 through 2011. We find that relative governance, rather than absolute governance, plays a role in foreign …

Ptsd Symptomology And Relationship Dysfunction: Is Emotional Reactivity The Culprit?, Kristin Lytle Dec 2014

Ptsd Symptomology And Relationship Dysfunction: Is Emotional Reactivity The Culprit?, Kristin Lytle

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Emotional numbing, a symptom of PTSD, has been found to be strongly associated with relationship dysfunction (Erbes et al., 2011; Monson et al., 2012; Riggs et al., 1998; Solomon et al., 2008). It is thought that emotional numbing can negatively impact relationships, yet there is limited understanding of the mechanisms of emotional numbing. Information processing theory developed by Litz and Gray (2001) suggests that emotional numbing is not a generalized response to all emotions and is actually specific to positive emotions. They believe that people with PTSD actually experience heightened negative emotions which then lead to emotional numbing to positive …

Exploring Reading Comprehension In Undergraduate Students With Adhd Symptoms, Christine Shelton Dec 2014

Exploring Reading Comprehension In Undergraduate Students With Adhd Symptoms, Christine Shelton

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Evidence suggests that Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) negatively affects verbal and reading comprehension in children, although the effect of ADHD on reading comprehension is partially mediated by the initial reading level of the participant. Additional research suggests that children and adults with ADHD tend to demonstrate a reduced working memory capacity, when compared to their non-ADHD peers, which may also affect the relationship between ADHD and reading comprehension. However, the current literature consists primarily of studies performed with children, and there has been little investigation into the biological factors of reading comprehension in ADHD populations. The current study sought to …

A Cross Comparison Of Spatiotemporally Enhanced Springtime Phenological Measurements From Satellites And Ground In A Northern U.S. Mixed Forest, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Zhuosen Wang, Feng Gao, Crystal B. Schaaf, Bin Tan, Jeffrey T. Morisette, Xiaoyang Zhang Dec 2014

A Cross Comparison Of Spatiotemporally Enhanced Springtime Phenological Measurements From Satellites And Ground In A Northern U.S. Mixed Forest, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Zhuosen Wang, Feng Gao, Crystal B. Schaaf, Bin Tan, Jeffrey T. Morisette, Xiaoyang Zhang

GSCE Faculty Publications

Cross comparison of satellite-derived land surface phenology (LSP) and ground measurements is useful to ensure the relevance of detected seasonal vegetation change to the underlying biophysical processes. While standard 16-day and 250-m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index (VI)-based springtime LSP has been evaluated in previous studies, it remains unclear whether LSP with enhanced temporal and spatial resolutions can capture additional details of ground phenology. In this paper, we compared LSP derived from 500-m daily MODIS and 30-m MODIS-Landsat fused VI data with landscape phenology (LP) in a northern U.S. mixed forest. LP was previously developed from intensively observed …

Improved Time Series Land Cover Classification By Missing-Observation-Adaptive Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction, David P. Roy, L. Yan Dec 2014

Improved Time Series Land Cover Classification By Missing-Observation-Adaptive Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction, David P. Roy, L. Yan

GSCE Faculty Publications

Dimensionality reduction (DR) is a widely used technique to address the curse of dimensionality when high-dimensional remotely sensed data, such as multi-temporal or hyperspectral imagery, are analyzed. Nonlinear DR algorithms, also referred to as manifold learning algorithms, have been successfully applied to hyperspectral data and provide improved performance compared with linear DR algorithms. However, DR algorithms cannot handle missing data that are common in multi-temporal imagery. In this paper, the Laplacian Eigenmaps (LE) nonlinear DR algorithm was refined for application to multi-temporal satellite data with large proportions of missing data. Refined LE algorithms were applied to 52-week Landsat time series …

Digital Cinema, Montage And Other Visualities, Shaun Huston Dec 2014

Digital Cinema, Montage And Other Visualities, Shaun Huston

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Digital technology is enabling a reconceptualization of film and cinema. The pliability of digital media opens up, particularly, the theory and practice of montage to revision. This pliability allows for cheap and easy copying and combining of images, and, relatedly, the transition from film frame to digital screen provides a less precious and more flexible creative space for filmmakers. In this article, I use my documentary, Comic Book City, Portland, Oregon USA (2012), to demonstrate and discuss how digital production can be used to construct new forms of montage, particularly in the combination of creative norms and practices traditionally associated …

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara Dec 2014

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

International migration has emerged as a priority issue on the global agenda in the two decades, especially in the context of its positive role for economic development. There is however, still considerable controversy and stereotyping on migration and migrants. Politicians, anti-immigration lobbyists and the media in Western countries propagate a number of unfounded myths about migration. It is claimed that there is massive migration from the South to the North in recent times. Increasing migration under irregular situations is believed to result in security threats demanding stringent border controls at destinations. Another longstanding myth is that migrants steal jobs from …

Youth Transition And Life Course Policy In Social Investment States: An Exploration Of Related Social Policy Reforms In Sweden And Uk, Chih-Lung Huang

Chih-lung Huang

It is one of the most important issues to resolve youth unemployment problem for every country during the era of rapid economic and social-structural transformation. Related strategies of the European Union stressed the policy instruments of prompting human capital for unemployed youth. How does the social investment state idea strengthen labor supply through state power and combine with different institutional context of state? What is the specific life course policy for these states? In this article I try to trace the two representatives of social investment state in European Union -- Sweden and UK, especially about youth transition from the …

Hiring Domestic Help And Family Well-Being In Hong Kong: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung Dec 2014

Hiring Domestic Help And Family Well-Being In Hong Kong: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

Outsourcing household tasks has become an important strategy for couples to avert the conflict between work and family roles. There is an increasing trend of domestic outsourcing, including the use of hired domestic help, in post-industrial societies. Despite the increasing popularity of outsourcing domestic tasks, the possible impact of hiring domestic help on family relations remains an important hole in our knowledge. Contributions of hiring domestic help to the employers’ family, such as averting marital conflict and improving marital quality, are often assumed in the literature but are rarely examined with empirical data, especially in a non-western context.

Avaliando O Modelo De Governança Das Agências Reguladoras, Lucia Helena Salgado, Eduardo Pedral Fiuza Dec 2014

Avaliando O Modelo De Governança Das Agências Reguladoras, Lucia Helena Salgado, Eduardo Pedral Fiuza

Lucia Helena Salgado
