Intervening In School-Based Youth Conflict: Violence Reduction, Positive Youth Development, Peer Mediation, And Conflict Resolution Education, Kaila Obstfeld Eisenkraft Nov 2015

Intervening In School-Based Youth Conflict: Violence Reduction, Positive Youth Development, Peer Mediation, And Conflict Resolution Education, Kaila Obstfeld Eisenkraft

Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration Publications

Public concern over youthful conflict was heightened during the latter half of the twentieth century by surges in juvenile violence and crime. In the 1990s, the prevention approach to reducing juvenile violence expanded to include a positive youth development focus which involved interventions to reinforce young people’s strengths. Strategies were devised and implemented in programs, including such school-based interventions as conflict resolution education and peer mediation, to enable youngsters to constructively manage conflict and increase the likelihood of positive outcomes. A review of the research provides promising evidence for the effectiveness of such programs in diminishing and managing school-based youth …

The State Of Education In Arkansas 2015 – How Much Are Arkansas’ Schools Spending?, Elise Swanson, Gary W. Ritter, Sarah C. Mckenzie

Arkansas Education Reports

When considering the quality of an education system, it is important to understand the resources available to students. Without proper resources, schools are unable to provide a quality educational experience, and students leave school unprepared to be fulfilled, productive members of society. School funding is therefore an important, and often controversial, topic in education policy. Arkansas’ public education system first ran into constitutional trouble over school funding in 1983 when the Supreme Court decided in Dupree v. Alma that the school funding formula was unconstitutional because it was based on valuations of the local tax base, not on the needs …

Testing The Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis For Water Footprint Indicator: A Cross-Sectional Study, Maamar Sebri Nov 2015

Testing The Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis For Water Footprint Indicator: A Cross-Sectional Study, Maamar Sebri

Maamar Sebri

The water footprint analysis has become a rapidly growing field of research although little attention has been paid to its relationship with economic growth. Using the available cross-section data, this study examines how the per capita water footprint varies as a function of per capita income within the environmental Kuznets curve framework at both aggregated and disaggregated level of water footprint. In addition, the issue of omitted variables is investigated by incorporating a number of control variables. Estimation results show no evidence in favour of an inverted-U environmental Kuznets curve, but they yield, in most cases, an evolution into an …

The Silent Enemy: Current Practices For Healthcare Professionals In The Identification And Reporting Of Psychological Harm In Cases Of Domestic Violence., Matthew Raj, Ellie Mckay

Matthew Raj

Awareness and recognition of domestic violence in Australia is increasing. In 2014, the Victorian Government appointed Fiona Richardson as the first Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Australian domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty, whose 11-year-old son Luke was killed by her husband, was named 2015 Australian of the Year. Also, a Special Taskforce chaired by Former Governor-General Quentin Bryce has been formed to conduct an extensive review of domestic violence in Queensland and legislative reforms have been implemented that adopt a broader concept and definition of domestic violence which include psychological harm. Despite these developments, the ability of …

Assessing The Shared Usage Of Collaboratively Acquired Ebooks Within The Borrow Direct Network, Adriana Popescu, Douglas Mcgee Nov 2015

Assessing The Shared Usage Of Collaboratively Acquired Ebooks Within The Borrow Direct Network, Adriana Popescu, Douglas Mcgee

Douglas McGee

Established in 1999, Borrow Direct (BD) is a partnership of nine independent U.S. universities and the Center for Research Libraries providing expedited delivery of print materials. As such, it has facilitated the delivery of nearly two million items to patrons at these institutions. The rapid emergence of e-books has posed a challenge to this successful resource sharing venture as member institutions have expanded their acquisition of this type of content. How does one “borrow” an ebook from another institution and avoid the need to purchase one’s own copy? Different models are emerging to tackle this issue. Under the aegis of …

The Challenges Of Exploring The Impact Of Genogram Construction On An Appalachian Family's Health Consciousness, Dilip Nair, Md, Indira Bhavsar, Nafeeza Hussain Nov 2015

The Challenges Of Exploring The Impact Of Genogram Construction On An Appalachian Family's Health Consciousness, Dilip Nair, Md, Indira Bhavsar, Nafeeza Hussain

Dilip Nair

Abstract Purpose Appalachians exhibit high rates of chronic disease-related behaviors which might improve with heightened health consciousness. Knowing one's family history can be an important health maintenance tool. Appalachians' health attitudes are shaped in large, closely knit extended families in which matriarchs play central roles. We sought assistance from West Virginian grandmothers in a family medicine practice in engaging their extended families with their genogram to assess the impact on family members' level of health consciousness. Methods The family physician identified West Virginian grandmothers in his practice. We sent each of them invitations to participate, along with their extended family, …

The Perennial Purple Heart, Anonymous

SURGE

Let’s talk about Veterans’ sacrifices. I must admit that I didn’t know much myself about veterans until one of my siblings entered the Navy. I’m very proud of his service, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting the United States. It’s probably not a common thought to all of us, but I think often of what it is like to be away during wartime serving our country. Military folks sacrifice a ton – whether it be lower pay, moving around a lot, being away from family for a long time, going into risky military operations, etc. These men and women sacrifice comparatively …

A More Perfect European Union?: The Transnational Networks Of The European Union’S Embassy Open House In Washington, D.C., Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Annually, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Washington, D.C., holds an embassy open house day for its 27 member nations to celebrate European culture and educate tourists on the functions of EU politics and international relations. Amidst an ongoing debt crisis and a continuing exploration of its identity as a supranational entity, “Embassy Day” affords an opportunity to see the EU as a spatial network uneasily caught in the tensions between the often nostalgic nationalism of its constituent countries and the future-oriented technocratic transnationalism of its composite alliance. By analyzing the cultural artifacts of Embassy Day from its …

Increasing Language Awareness And Self-Efficacy Of Fl Students Using Self-Assessment And The Actfl Proficiency Guidelines, Elizabeth M. Kissling, M. E. O'Donnell

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This study describes how oral language was assessed in an advanced-level college foreign language (FL) conversation course. Learners used the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines to guide self-analyses of their oral production at intervals throughout the course. The intent was to provide opportunities for learners to develop an understanding of what constitutes oral proficiency, gauge their own progress, and set personal goals. Learners’ self-analysis narratives suggested they began to notice different aspects of their speech and to better articulate their abilities and limitations. Broadly speaking, the results suggest that self-assessment of oral performance guided by the Proficiency Guidelines is an effective way …
