The Distribution Of The Inverse Square Root Transformed Error Component Of The Multiplicative Time Series Model, Bright F. Ajibade, Chinwe R. Nwosu, J. I. Mbegdu Nov 2015

The Distribution Of The Inverse Square Root Transformed Error Component Of The Multiplicative Time Series Model, Bright F. Ajibade, Chinwe R. Nwosu, J. I. Mbegdu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The probability density function, mean and variance of the inverse square-root transformed left-truncated N(1,σ2) error component e*t(=1/ √et) of the multiplicative time series model were established. A comparison of key-statistical properties of e*t and et confirmed normality with mean 1 but with Var(e*t) ≈1/4Var(et) when σ≤0.14. Hence σ≤0.14 is the required condition for successful transformation.

International Labour Organization (Ilo) And Broader Civil Society: An Uneasy Relationship?, Piyasiri Wickramasekara Nov 2015

International Labour Organization (Ilo) And Broader Civil Society: An Uneasy Relationship?, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

This powerpoint presentation discusses the interactions between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and broader civil society. There is integration of non-governmental social partners in the identity of the Organization itself – Employers’ and Workers’ Organizations in view of ILO’s focus on labour. However, ILO maintains that … “... employers’ and workers’ organizations are distinct from other civil society groups in that they represent the actors of the “real economy” and draw their legitimacy from their membership” This leads to reduced scope for ILO interaction with broader civil society described as non-governmental organizations or civil society organizations. While there is provision …

How Does Labour Market Structure Affect The Response Of Economies To Shocks?, Istvan Konya, Aurelijus Dabusinskas, Stephen Millard Nov 2015

How Does Labour Market Structure Affect The Response Of Economies To Shocks?, Istvan Konya, Aurelijus Dabusinskas, Stephen Millard

Istvan Konya

The recent crisis in the Eurozone has led to much discussion about the structure of labour markets in different Eurozone economies. In particular, there has been much talk of the need for structural labour market reform in the Eurozone periphery. But, there are many aspects of labour market structure – eg, wage flexibility, flexibility in hiring and firing, benefits, etc – and it is not clear a priori which aspects really matter. In this paper, we analyse how cross-country differences in labour market characteristics – in particular, wage and employment rigidities – shape the response of different countries to a …

China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment And International Investment Law, Karl P. Sauvant, Michael D. Nolan Nov 2015

China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment And International Investment Law, Karl P. Sauvant, Michael D. Nolan

Karl P. Sauvant

As China’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown, its approach to international investment agreements (IIAs) has changed. China is now one of the world’s most important outward investors, with Chinese FDI facing widespread criticism. The challenge for China is to adapt to this new configuration of interests stemming from these developments, both in terms of its national policies and the contents of its IIAs. In so doing, it is likely to influence, perhaps significantly, the further evolution of international investment law. This article deals briefly with the salient features of China’s outward FDI and the policies that support it; …

Gathering The Needles Evaluating The Impact Of Gold Open Access Content With Traditional Subscription Journals, Jill Emery, Alison Bobal Nov 2015

Gathering The Needles Evaluating The Impact Of Gold Open Access Content With Traditional Subscription Journals, Jill Emery, Alison Bobal

Jill Emery

Investigating the use of gold open access content within subscription content has been a near impossible task until the adoption of the COUNTER 4 statistics in 2014. By reviewing the COUNTER JR1 GOA 2014 reports, two librarians evaluate the gold open access usage at their respective institutions from the following publishers: Elsevier, NPG, Sage, Springer, and Wiley. This initial investigation will be a benchmark for future studies to see if there is any impact on subscribed content or if usage is limited to non-subscribed content from these providers. Attendees will become familiar with the JR1 GOA reports from COUNTER as …

Jill Emery

This presentation will outline the key components of the academic research life cycle and how libraries can align their services to best serve academic authors. By walking through each component of the academic research life cycle, we will outline the services libraries currently have available or can develop to best coordinate with the activities undertaken by the research community. This talk will also explore the development work occurring above the campus level to indicate the most useful standards and services available beyond the campus environment. In addition, the presenters will also explore the need to develop further life cycles for …

Shared Print In The Orbis Cascade Alliance, Jill Emery, Xan Arch, Jim Bunnelle

Jill Emery

Shared Print programs are one of the most important collaborative activities being pursued by many regional library groups. The Orbis Cascade Alliance (Oregon, Washington, and Idaho) and Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (Colorado and Wyoming) each have multi-state regional programs which demonstrate unique characteristics and features. In the Orbis Cascade Alliance, librarians are having to re-visit historic shared purchases. They will explore one such project and examine steps taken to reconcile current institutional needs with past collection-building priorities.

Let’S Look To Uk To Solve Problems Of Our Ageing Population, Lorcan Sirr Nov 2015

Let’S Look To Uk To Solve Problems Of Our Ageing Population, Lorcan Sirr

Media

Europe is going grey, very grey. In 1800 no country had a life expectancy beyond age 40, but by 2050 one in three people in Europe will be over 60. By then, one in 10 will be over 80—nearly 500,000 people in Ireland. The ageing population will bring its own problems, caused mainly by health, income and government support. Denmark spends about €5,000 a year on social protection in old age; Latvia, Romania and Croatia spend €500. In Ireland, in 2011, the figure was €2,000.

Offshoring, Productivity, And Labor Income Risk, Prathi Seneviratne Nov 2015

Offshoring, Productivity, And Labor Income Risk, Prathi Seneviratne

Department of Economics Working Paper Series

This paper uses panel data from the US to study the impact of globalization on the mean and variance of individual wages at the industry level. Globalization is measured in several ways; import penetration and export intensity, which capture international exposure in goods markets, and offshoring intensity, which captures exposure in factor markets. Preliminary results show that globalization increases industry-level multifactor productivity, which translates to higher wages, and but the impact on wage volatility depends on the type of exposure to international markets: import penetration raises wage volatility, while offshoring intensity reduces it. This suggests that import competition generates a …

The Joy Of Combining Librarianship And Motherhood, Alexandra Gallin-Parisi Nov 2015

The Joy Of Combining Librarianship And Motherhood, Alexandra Gallin-Parisi

Library Faculty Research

While there is a rich literature about how academic faculty manage to balance work and family life, there is a surprising paucity of research centered on academic librarianship and motherhood. In this phenomenological study based on interviews, the lived experiences of 21 librarians who are also mothers of young children are explored. Six themes focused on the benefits and rewards of combining librarianship and motherhood emerge.

Chapelain, L. M. Mahovetz, S. Milne, T. Stoinski, A. Bania, E. V. Lonsdorf, J. Schaeffer, J. Russell, William D. Hopkins

Psychology Faculty Research

A number of factors have been proposed to influence within and between species variation in handedness in non-human primates. In the initial study, we assessed the influence of grip morphology on hand use for simple reaching in a sample of 564 great apes including 49 orangutans Pongo pygmaeus, 66 gorillas Gorilla gorilla, 354 chimpanzees Pan troglodytes and 95 bonobos Pan paniscus. Overall, we found a significant right hand bias for reaching. We also found a significant effect of the grip morphology of hand use. Grasping with the thumb and index finger was more prevalent in the right …
