Emerging technologies have offered libraries and librarians new ways and methods to collect and analyze data in the era of accountability to justify their value and contributions. For example, Gallagher, Bauer and Dollar (2005) analyzed the paper and online journal usage from all possible data sources and discovered that users at the Yale Medical Library preferred the electronic format of articles to the print version. After this discovery, they were able to take necessary steps to adjust their journal subscriptions. Many library professionals advocate such data-driven library management to strengthen and specify library budget proposals.

The overall goal of this research was to quantify the safety performance of alternative traffic control strategies to mitigate right-turning vehicle-bicycle crashes at signalized intersections in Oregon. The ultimate aim was to provide useful design guidance to potentially mitigate these collision types at the critical intersection configurations. This report includes a comprehensive review of more than 150 scientific and technical articles that relate to bicycle-motor vehicle crashes. A total of 504 right-hook crashes were identified from vehicle path information in the Oregon crash data from 2007-2011, mapped and reviewed in detail to identify the frequency and severity of crashes by …

A Practitioner’S Guide To Testing Regional Industrial Localization, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Economics Faculty Publications
The Ellison-Glaeser index is an unbiased measure of geographic industrial localization that improves upon simpler measures, such as the location quotient. We develop and describe software that allows for the Ellison-Glaeser index to be used in a statistical test to assess the chance that a particular industry is geographically localized. We give instructions on how to install the software, run the program, and interpret the results.

Resolving The Issue Of How Reliability Is Related To Statistical Power: Adhering To Mathematical Definitions, Donald W. Zimmerman, Bruno D. Zumbo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Reliability in classical test theory is a population-dependent concept, defined as a ratio of true-score variance and observed-score variance, where observed-score variance is a sum of true and error components. On the other hand, the power of a statistical significance test is a function of the total variance, irrespective of its decomposition into true and error components. For that reason, the reliability of a dependent variable is a function of the ratio of true-score variance and observed-score variance, whereas statistical power is a function of the sum of the same two variances. Controversies about how reliability is related to statistical …

A Robust Panel Unit Root Test In The Presence Of Cross Sectional Dependence, Nurul Sima Mohamad Shariff, Nor Aishah Hamzah
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Problems arise in testing the stationarity of the panel in the presence of cross sectional dependence and outliers. The currently available panel unit root tests are very much affected by the presence of outliers. As such, this article introduces an alternative test which is robust to outliers and cross sectional dependence. The performance and robustness of the proposed test is discussed and comparisons are made to the existing tests via simulation studies.
Statistical Modeling Of Migration Attractiveness Of The Eu Member States, Tatiana Tikhomirova, Yulia Lebedeva
Statistical Modeling Of Migration Attractiveness Of The Eu Member States, Tatiana Tikhomirova, Yulia Lebedeva
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Identifying the relationship between the migration attractiveness of the European Union countries and their level of socio-economic development is investigated. An approach is proposed identify influences on migration socio-economic characteristics, by aggregating and reducing their diversity, and substantiating the cause-and-effect relationships of the studied phenomenon. A stable classification of countries scheme is developed according to the attractiveness of migration on aggregate factors, and then an econometric model of a binary choice using panel data for 2008-2010 was applying, quantifying the impact of aggregate designed factors on immigration and emigration.

Addressing Campus Sexual Assault Awareness Through Service Learning, Eileen J. Coussens
VA Engage Journal
ABSTRACT
This essay focuses on a Service Learning project which a group of students from my Advanced Composition class at Old Dominion University participated in regarding sexual assault awareness on college campuses. Throughout our class, we learned what Service Learning projects consist of and used what we learned to form our own proposals for projects that would reach from the classroom to the surrounding area to address community issues. We have written about our experiences with this Service Learning project in a reflective essay which acts as our final exam. In doing this, we also have attained our course goals …
The Development Of Job-Based Psychological Ownership, Robert B. Bullock
The Development Of Job-Based Psychological Ownership, Robert B. Bullock
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
Psychological ownership has come to light as an important state with strong implications on employee attitudes and behaviors. However, relatively little attention has been paid towards the process by which employees come to develop feelings of psychological ownership towards their work, particularly regarding the role played by individual traits in this process. Ownership theorists claim that personality and disposition should matter (Mayhew, Ashkanasy, Bramble, & Gardner, 2007; Pierce & Jussila, 2011), yet these claims remain largely untested.
The purpose of the current investigation is to address these gaps by exploring how employee disposition and job design contribute to the development …

My office is on the thirteenth floor of an eighteen-story concrete tower that sits in the heart of campus. The building is so massively disproportionate to other buildings that it looms over the entire campus. Inside, the hallways are long and narrow, with no windows or natural light. A bank of six large elevators takes up the center space of each floor. Perhaps it is not surprising that this office tower has become the source of campus lore and legends among students and faculty. During my first semester on campus, a student asked if I knew the history of my …

Tobacco And Alcohol Excise Taxes For Improving Public Health And Revenue Outcomes: Marrying Sin And Virtue?, Richard M. Bird
Tobacco And Alcohol Excise Taxes For Improving Public Health And Revenue Outcomes: Marrying Sin And Virtue?, Richard M. Bird
ICEPP Working Papers
Excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco have long been a dependable and significant revenue source in many countries. More recently, considerable attention has been paid to the way in which such taxes may also be used to attain public health objectives by reducing the consumption of products with adverse health and social impacts. Some have gone further and argued that explicitly earmarking excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco to finance public health expenditures – marrying sin and virtue as it were – will both make increasing such taxes more politically acceptable and provide the funding needed to increase such expenditures, …

IMPORTANCE: Adolescents whose parents have a history of depression are at risk for developing depression and functional impairment. The long-term effects of prevention programs on adolescent depression and functioning are not known.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a cognitive-behavioral prevention (CBP) program reduced the incidence of depressive episodes, increased depression-free days, and improved developmental competence 6 years after implementation.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 4-site randomized clinical trial compared the effect of CBP plus usual care vs usual care, through follow-up 75 months after the intervention (88% retention), with recruitment from August 2003 through February 2006 at a health maintenance organization, …

Alpha And Omega: When Bullies Run In Packs, Patricia Meglich, Andra Gumbus
WCBT Faculty Publications
While workplace bullying often involves multiple perpetrators, limited research has investigated this important aspect of the phenomenon. In the present study, we explored the perceived severity and comparison of actual behaviors experienced when different perpetrators attack the target. Survey results showed that bullying by one’s supervisor is perceived to be more severe than bullying by a group of coworkers and that coworkers are more likely to bully when the supervisor bullies. When working as a group, bullies focus their attack on the target’s personal life rather than on his or her work life. Implications for research and practice are provided.

Cultural Influence Of Storytelling: An Examination Of The Use Of Narratives In Political Campaigns, Charla Bansley
Masters Theses
Television has changed political discourse. The thirty second commercial has replaced typography and rhetoric. After losing the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections, the Republican National Committee concluded that the GOP has lost the ability to persuade. Walter Fisher's Narrative Paradigm states that meaningful communication is in the form of storytelling, which enables public discourse to observe not only differences, but commonalities. In a postmodern culture that does not believe in absolute truth, this study asked the following question: Are conservatives still using statistics and facts to communicate conservative principles? The rhetorical research conducted here examined …
