This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.

Enhancing Students’ Understanding And Revision Of Narrative Writing Through Self-Assessment And Dialogue: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stephanie Baxa Oct 2015

Enhancing Students’ Understanding And Revision Of Narrative Writing Through Self-Assessment And Dialogue: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stephanie Baxa

The Qualitative Report

With students losing hope when faced with challenges in the classroom, daily student-involved formative assessment that contributes to a growth mindset is essential. Through self-assessment and dialogue, students can generate feedback used for improvement of their writing, and teachers can give feedback that fosters self-efficacy. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore the growth of fifth-grade writers as they participated in self-assessment, writing conferences with their teacher, and story revision. Research questions focused on students’ ability to explain learning targets and strengths and weaknesses of their writing and their ability to revise their writing. The participants, two …

Midcourse Corrections And Life Satisfaction In A Sample Of Mid-Career Doctoral Students, Catherine E. Hiltz-Hymes, Susan Spicer, Elizabeth A. Hardy, Manuela Waddell, Sherry L. Hatcher

The Qualitative Report

The focus of this study was to examine motivations and reactions in context of a midlife decision to seek a doctoral degree. Participants were 116 non-traditional age, men and women graduate students and recent alumni from one of three geographically distributed and blended delivery model doctoral programs. Demographic information was collected, including career history and goals, age, gender, and ethnicity. The mean and median ages were between 41 and 50. The research questionnaire featured narrative questions regarding “midcourse corrections,” any experienced trauma, and life satisfactions. Autobiographical material was also analyzed thematically, providing further illustrative examples of the midlife experiences in …

Self-Reflexivity As An Ethical Instrument To Give Full Play To Our Explicit And Implicit Subjectivity As Qualitative Researchers, Lorena Cruz Oct 2015

Self-Reflexivity As An Ethical Instrument To Give Full Play To Our Explicit And Implicit Subjectivity As Qualitative Researchers, Lorena Cruz

The Qualitative Report

Being a qualitative researcher involves, mainly, assuming the subjective dimension of the research process. This article reflects the process through which I am going through as a junior qualitative researcher within the educative field. If we are immersed in social or humanistic knowledge construction as researchers, we are part of a complex process of relations, we influence and we are influenced, as well. It is an ethical assumption which implies taking responsibility. In this article, I try to reveal how I dealt with my explicit and implicit subjectivity, developing self-reflexivity strategies that allowed me to expand the understanding of the …

Who Is That And What Do They Do? : Showing Connections Between External Services And Your Institutional Repository, Daniel C. Draper, Suzi White

Daniel Draper

Since the implementation of DigiTool for the Digital Collections of Colorado in 2007, the landscape of services available to academic institutional repositories has changed significantly. A recent migration to DSpace precipitated an assessment of the increased number of services available to support open scholarly information sharing. What's the difference between VIVO and Altmetric? How are Figshare and Globus services similar? This poster defines core functionality of many of these services and how they relate to DSpace. It also categorizes them into four key areas: alternative research metrics, data storage and delivery, faculty and institutional reporting, and digital preservation. The overview …

Our Reliance On Family For Housing Support Won’T Last Forever, Lorcan Sirr Oct 2015

Our Reliance On Family For Housing Support Won’T Last Forever, Lorcan Sirr

Media

History is more important than geography in explaining our relationship with housing. We have a funny relationship with housing in Ireland, one that goes beyond the usual explanation of our land and property obsession being a post-colonial hang-up. Given our location at the northwest edge of Europe, it would be logical to assume Ireland would have a similar approach to housing as Germany, France and the Netherlands. We are different from our regional neighbours, however, and more like our distant cousins in Malta, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Selection Of A Reanalysis Meteorological Product For Use In Solar Resource Assessment, Anthony Lopez Oct 2015

Selection Of A Reanalysis Meteorological Product For Use In Solar Resource Assessment, Anthony Lopez

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and collaborators are updating the National Solar Radiation Database with the next-generation satellite-based solar resource assessment known as the Physical Solar Model (PSM). This is part of an effort to achieve NREL and DOE’s goal to make solar energy technologies cost competitive with other forms of energy in the United States. Required in this effort is the selection of an appropriate meteorological reanalysis product- that provides critical inputs for solar energy estimation. This analysis quantitatively and qualitatively assessed the spatial and temporal accuracy of three meteorological reanalysis products using ground measurements. …

Cargo Bikes As A Growth Area For Bicycle Vs. Auto Trips: Exploring The Potential For Mode Substitution Behavior, William W. Riggs Oct 2015

Cargo Bikes As A Growth Area For Bicycle Vs. Auto Trips: Exploring The Potential For Mode Substitution Behavior, William W. Riggs

William W. Riggs

Cargo bikes are increasing in availability in the United States. While a large body of research has continued to investigate traditional bike transportation, cargo bikes offer the potential to capture trips for those that might otherwise be made by car. To investigate this, data from a survey of cargo bike users are evaluated using descriptive and inferential statistics. The survey queried how use and travel dynamics of characteristics with the hypothesis that cargo bike ownership has the potential to contribute to mode substitution behavior. From a descriptive standpoint, 68.9% of those surveyed changed their travel behavior after purchasing a cargo …

The Abcs Of Stress Responding: Examining The Time Course Of Affective, Biological, And Cognitive Responses To Induced Stress As Prospective Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms, Marissa Erin Rudolph Oct 2015

The Abcs Of Stress Responding: Examining The Time Course Of Affective, Biological, And Cognitive Responses To Induced Stress As Prospective Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms, Marissa Erin Rudolph

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Vulnerability-stress models of depression posit risk for depression is characterized by the presence of underlying affective, biological, and cognitive vulnerabilities that become activated during life stress exposure. Extant research has shown heightened reactivity to stress across these vulnerability domains predicts depression; however, little is known whether the persistence of and failure to down-regulate these maladaptive stress responses conveys greater risk of depression than initial reactivity alone. The current study examined associations between the time course of responses to a laboratory stress induction and depressive symptoms. I hypothesized that prolonged maladaptive responses to the stressor across affective (state negative affect; NA), …

Success! Assessment In Action And Its Impact On Four Academic Libraries, Lisa Massengale, Heather Jagman, Amy Glass, Stephanie Bluemle

Heather Jagman

This panel will provide an overview of Assessment in Action learning projects, which assessed library impact on student learning. Augustana College studied the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy and critical thinking skills. DePaul University investigated how independent learning activities allowed first year students to articulate how the library contributed to their success. Illinois Central College looked at library instruction’s impact on student success within sections of Composition ENG 111 (Composition II) courses. Illinois Institute of Technology examined whether intensity of library usage affected undergraduate student success.
