Literate Lahu, speakers of a Tibeto-Burman language in the ethnically and linguistically diverse uplands of Southeast Asia and southwest China, inscribe their language in an ecology of literacies shaped by the imbrication of a number of ideologies. As members of the larger category of chao khao or mountain people, the Lahu belong to a group which is persistently labeled as Other. (Laungaramsri 2001: 43-4). Lahu are also a people-without-writing (Pine 1999), despite the fact that at least three writing systems exist for Lahu, with a fourth in somewhat limited use and at least one other system in development. The ideological …

The Importance Of Reproduction In Evidence Based Policing: A Comment, Laura Huey
Sociology Publications
In the following comment, the author examines the importance of reproduction in evidence based policing. Moreover, she argues that failure to reproduce studies – including through the use of varied methodologies – is antithetical to the development of a solid evidence base upon which to ground effective and efficient community safety practices.
Role Of Recent And Remote Context Exposures On Incubation Of Fear Memories, Peter Zambetti
Role Of Recent And Remote Context Exposures On Incubation Of Fear Memories, Peter Zambetti
Psychology
Studying learning and memory through the methods of Pavlovian fear conditioning has been a topic of behavioral neuroscience research for decades. Anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder can be modeled in rodents through fear conditioning. This study took on a different approach to study the learning and recall of a fear memory by using a within subjects group. This group was tested at both a recent and remote interval. The recent timepoint was three days after conditioning and the remote timepoint was thirty-one days after conditioning. The timepoints are used to observe the effect the passage of time has …

Skidmore Clips Of Neutral And Expressive Scenarios (Scenes): Novel Dynamic Stimuli For Social Cognition Research, Casey Schofield, Justin Weeks, Lea Taylor, Colten Karnedy
Psychology
Social cognition research has relied primarily on photographic emotional stimuli. Such stimuli likely have limited ecological validity in terms of representing real world social interactions. The current study presents evidence for the validity of a new stimuli set of dynamic social SCENES (Skidmore Clips of Emotional and Neutral Expressive Scenarios). To develop these stimuli, ten undergraduate theater students were recruited to portray members of an audience. This audience was configured to display (seven) varying configurations of social feedback, ranging from unequivocally approving to unequivocally disapproving (including three different versions of balanced/neutral scenes). Validity data were obtained from 383 adult participants …

Financial Soundness Indicators: The Case Of Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba, Idris Adamu
Financial Soundness Indicators: The Case Of Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba, Idris Adamu
Bullion
This paper adopted the concept as designed by the Fund to examine the soundness of the Nigeria Banking Sector from 3007Q1 to 20014Q4. From the result of the financial Soundness Indicators (FSIs) complied for Nigeria, it is obvious that the indicators can serve as reliable and consistent tools, capable of detecting vulnerabilities in the system. The study, therefore, recommends that adequate attention be paid to the indicators by the Central Bank. The Bank is urged to strive to gain full understanding of the concept as well as design additional framework for using the indicators so as to enable her take …

Inclusive Growth And Poverty Reduction In Nigeria, Uche M. Ozughalu, Fidelis O. Ogwumike
Bullion
This study shows that Nigeria has not experienced inclusive growth over the years, using relevant national and global data. The country has experienced pervasive poverty, high rate of unemployment and high level of income/wealth inequality despite impressive economic growth rates over the years. The study also highlights the major factors that could be responsible for the non-inclusive growth in Nigeria; these factors include poor performance of the manufacturing sector, weak knowledge base, poor human capacity development and low level of global competitiveness. The study uses tabular presentations and verbal constructs in its analysis. The government and policy makers in Nigeria …

Nigeria's Monetary Survey: 2001-2014, Phebian N. Bewaji, Chioma P. Nwosu
Bullion
The paper showed that Nigeria's monetary survey is a useful tool in the analysis of monetary development and its linkages with key sectors of the economy. It conveys a useful insight on the evolution of the payment system and money holding behavior. Findings indicated that Nigeria's broad money aggregate was largely determined by external factor, pre-2007 global financial crisis, while domestic factors had significant implications for monetary management post-2007.
Shadow Banking Services And Its Implications For The Nigerian Economy, Jibrin Yakubu, Joseph Achua
Shadow Banking Services And Its Implications For The Nigerian Economy, Jibrin Yakubu, Joseph Achua
Bullion
This paper reviews some conceptual and theoretical issues as well as considers the implications of shadow banking services in the Nigerian economy. lt defines shadow 3banking services as 'a system of credit intermediation that involves entities and activities outside Central Bank of Nigeria's regulatory capture'. The paper noted that Nigeria is yet to make significant policy impact on shadow banking in spite of its inherent systemic risk and regulatory arbitrage concerns on the economy. ln addition, there is neither data collection nor information management frameworks to measure its size, performance and impact on the economy. The paper therefore, recommends the …

Wanda And Joseph: Language Development In The Context Of Family Stress And Trauma, Isabel Jay
Child Development Theses
Much has been written on child language development and recent years have seen a burst of research on the psychological and physiological impact of trauma and stress. This study seeks to review existing research on how family trauma influences language development, and consider existing interventions. A case study is presented of work with a mother and her language-‐delayed child through preventive services. Interventions focused on increasing the mother’s capacity for mentalization and playful interaction with her child were found to be useful in ameliorating communication barriers and increasing the child’s social engagement.

In June 2014 an Expert Panel on Technology and Innovation in UN Peacekeeping was commissioned to examine how technology and innovation could strengthen peacekeeping missions. The panel's report argues for wider deployment of advanced technologies, including greater use of ground and airborne sensors and other technical sources of data, advanced data analytics and information fusion to assist in data integration. This article explores the emerging intelligence-led, informationist conception of UN peacekeeping against the backdrop of increasingly complex peacekeeping mandates and precarious security conditions. New peacekeeping with its heightened commitment to information as a political resource and the endorsement of offensive …

A Work System Perspective On Adoption Entities, Adoption Processes, And Post-Adoption Compliance And Noncompliance, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This conceptual contribution responds to the invitation to the DIGIT 2015 Call for Papers “to reflect on and move forward from the dominant stream of research work on technology acceptance.” The dominant stream of research is basically about antecedents and correlates of adoption and continuation of use for hardware/software artifacts. This paper uses work system theory and several of its extensions to identify directions for adoption research that have been realized partially, but not nearly to the extent possible. It focuses on three general issues:
1) what adoption means in the context of work systems,
2) how adoption occurs, and …
Feasibility Of A Peer Support Oriented Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Massive Open Online Course For Emotion Dysregulation, Rachel Gill
Senior Theses
Public interest in mental health care modernization has steadily gained momentum since ratifying The United States Health Care Affordability Act (U.S. Office of the Legislative Counsel, 2010). Furthermore, with 1 in every 1000 people seeking online support for mental health issues (DeAndrea & Anthony, 2013), research concerning the development of virtual mental health applications is critical to ensure science guides their innovation. To this end, this study explores the feasibility of a mental health intervention that unites the experiential, recovery-oriented, and self-determined values of mental health peer support (Kaufman et al., 2014) with dialectical behavior therapy skills training (DBT-ST) (Linehan, …

Second-Billed But Not Second-Rate: A Reappraisal Of Three Character Actors From Hollywood’S Golden Age, Candace M. Graham
Theses & Dissertations
Seventy-six years ago Hollywood experienced something never before nor since seen. The year, 1939, was Hollywood’s “Dream Year” for production of some of the most memorable films of all time. Today, the term used to describe films of this success level is blockbuster. Film scholars and fans call them classics. It was the culmination of films of Hollywood’s Golden Age starring every one of Hollywood’s A-Listers of this Golden Age of film, from Don Ameche to Loretta Young. However, lost in this maze of the top-billed or leading actors were the character actors who were also known as supporting cast …

Bridging The Divide White Paper On Medication Abortion: Overview Of Research & Policy In The United States, Liz Borkowski, Julia Strasser, Amy Allina, Susan Wood
Jacobs Institute of Women's Health
Medication abortion (also called medical abortion) is a safe method of abortion available for the past 15 years in the US. The Bridging the Divide white paper summarizes the scientific evidence related to the current medication abortion process and potential changes to the process that could make it even safer and more accessible for patients, as well as policy considerations and directions for future research.
In the fall of 2000, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug Mifeprex© (generic: mifepristone) for use in medication abortions. That approval included requirements that affect both patients and providers and that …
Influence Of Rock-Pool Characteristics On The Distribution And Abundance Of Inter-Tidal Fishes, Gemma E. White, Grant C. Hose, Culum Brown
Influence Of Rock-Pool Characteristics On The Distribution And Abundance Of Inter-Tidal Fishes, Gemma E. White, Grant C. Hose, Culum Brown
Ecology Collection
Rock pools can be found in inter-tidal marine environments worldwide; however, there have been few studies exploring what drives their, fish species composition, especially in Australia. The rock-pool environment is highly dynamic and offers a unique natural laboratory to study the habitat choices, physiological limitations and adaptations of inter-tidal fish species. In this study rock pools of the Sydney region were sampled to determine how the physical (volume, depth, rock cover and vertical position) and biological (algal cover and predator presence) parameters of pools influence fish distribution and abundance. A total of 27 fish species representing 14 families was observed …
