This past week, the nation was hit by a shock wave. Donald Trump, the former host of NBC’s “The Apprentice,” was elected president of the United States. People are wondering, “how could this be?” This is a man who openly used race-baiting rhetoric, endorsed xenophobic policies, insulted disabled reporters and performed so many more ridiculous acts I probably could not fit them into this piece. So how could this guy have possibly won?

One year after a near-fatal accident with a semi-truck, sophomore AJ Ervin believes his experience has made him a better person. He wouldn’t change anything, if given the opportunity.

That’s an incredible statement from a 20-year-old who required assistance from emergency workers to survive the accident on Route 42. Ervin was placed in a medically induced coma at Miami Valley Hospital after suffering heavy brain damage in the December 2, 2015 accident. He returned to classes in August 2016.

Mark Peters has been named the 2016 Brevard County Teacher of the Year and the Space Coast Teacher of the Year. Peters works as a physical education and health teacher at Port Malabar Elementary in Palm Bay, Florida, where he has spent all 32 years of his career.

Peters graduated from Troy High School and Cedarville University (1981).

According to the results of the Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey conducted by Chu Hai College of Higher Education in collaboration with Lingnan University’s Centre for Public Policy Studies, the Happiness Index for Hong Kong people in 2016 stands at 67.6 (on a scale of 0 to 100), significantly lower than last year’s 70.0. However, the main decline occurs with those aged below 30, whose happiness index plunged from 69.3 to 63.8, the lowest score on record.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present A Festival of Christmas on Dec. 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. The theme for the 25^th annual musical production is “The Spirit of Christmas!”

Ouachita vocal ensembles Concert Choir, Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Ouachita Sounds will all be featured in the performance. It is the professional and personal responsibility of teachers to analyze, evaluate, reflect on, and improve their classroom practice (Desimone & Garet, 2016). This paper introduces a guided teacher observation model which combines both self and peer-observations, designed for Foreign-Language (FL) teachers to evaluate their own classroom practice through video recording and directed reflection. Instructors’ self-assessment statements that implement this model show that it enables teachers to identify and address their areas for improvement (Bailey, 1981; Barber, 1990; Zeichner & Liston, 2014; Spicer-Escalante & deJonge-Kannan, 2014). The reaction to the 2016 Oscars, which birthed the trending topic #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter, highlights a serious problem in our country — a lack of representation for non-white communities. Watching a movie in the 1950s is still somehow reminiscent of today. We have put an end to blackface, the practice of coloring a white person’s face with paint to fill the role of a historically non-white character without hiring an accurate representative. The Economic Efficacy Of Reintegration Assistance For Former Child Soldiers, Jonathan B. Kaufmann

There is no consensus among scholars on the efficacy of reintegration assistance programs, including how their services affect reintegration outcomes. This research is the first statistical analysis of the economic impacts of reintegration assistance for former child soldiers. Several regression analyses were performed to determine the effect of reintegration assistance on earnings and social capital. The results indicate that no statistically significant relationship exists between reintegration assistance and earnings or social capital. Conversely, societal interventions such as increasing access to education and promoting traditional cleansing ceremonies were effective.

Individual And Family Protective Factors Of Intentional And Unintentional Consumption Of Online Pornography In Hong Kong, Cecilia M. S. Ma, Daniel T. L. Shek, Catie C. W. Lai

The purpose of the current study was to explore how positive youth development and family functioning were related to unintentional and intentional exposure to online pornography in Chinese adolescents. A total of 1401 secondary school students (mean age=12.43) participated in the study. Findings suggested that positive youth development and family functioning were associated with lower exposure to online pornography. In particular, higher levels of spirituality, social competence, mutuality and communication were associated with lower levels of both types of exposure to online pornography. Discussion focuses on the importance of promoting positive youth development and family functioning as protective factors against …

To better understand factors that influence individuals’ motivation to engage in physical activity, this study aimed to identify the motivational profiles among the Chinese university students, compare the motivational profiles between genders, and explore whether satisfaction of various psychological needs vary with different motivational profiles. Two thousand and twenty-two Chinese university students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing motivation regulation and psychological needs satisfaction. Three motivational profiles were identified for both genders. The overall patterns of the motivational profiles for both genders were similar. However, males (44%) were more likely than their female counterparts (19%) in self-determined profile group. …

Adopting a qualitative methodology, views of the students on a subject on service leadership were examined. Students taking the subject (n=153) were invited to use descriptors and metaphors to describe their experiences about the subject. Regarding the descriptors given by the students, most of them were positive in nature. Similar positive findings were obtained for the metaphors. The findings are generally consistent with those studies using the same methodology reported in the literature. Organizational labor forces in countries that include China, the OECD and U.S. continue to be increasingly composed of workers who migrate across country regions or from other countries. Since their children will enter the next generation of labor forces, it is increasingly relevant to assess the educational experience of these children. Background studies of both children and adults indicate the importance of assessing subjective well-being (SW-B) to overall health and human capital. This study reports results of an initial assessment of SW-B in children of migrantfamily in an urban center of China across school type, grade and gender differences.

“We Just Pretended As If Everything Was Good”: Communication About Alcohol In Families Of Nonalcoholic And Alcoholic Parents, Marie Haverfield

Family communication is a strong predictor of the attitudes and behaviors children and adolescents have toward alcohol. This study explored perspectives of family communication about the topic of alcohol in focus groups consisting of adult children of alcoholics and adult children of nonalcoholics. The study utilized Koerner and Fitzpatrick’s (2002) family communication patterns theory and Gottman’s (2001) emotion regulation theory to guide research and focus group questions. A group of trained coders conducted an analysis of transcripts from four focus groups—two were comprised of self-proclaimed adult children of alcoholics and two consisted solely of adult children of nonalcoholic parents. Four years ago Ben Fountain’s disturbing novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, was published to critical acclaim and an eventual National Book Award nomination. It was one of the first pieces of fiction coming out of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In July of 2013 I wrote that Fountain’s novel was an important work addressing the issue of the relationship between American sports fans and American soldiers who are commonly acclaimed as American heroes.

Through a new collaborative educational partnership with the Xenia community, Cedarville University is changing the way it prepares future teachers. And the immediate benefactor is Xenia City Schools.

The new teacher education program places teacher candidates and university professors in Xenia classrooms at the same time, allowing students to deepen their teaching skills, while also taking college courses. The program also assigns student teachers to elementary, middle and high schools for their field experience, while receiving college instruction at the same time.

Correlates Of Sexual-Risk Behaviors Among Young Black Msm: Implications For Clinic-Based Counseling Programs, Richard A. Crosby, Leandro Mena, Janelle M. Ricks

This study applied an 8-item index of recent sexual-risk behaviors to young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) and evaluated the distribution for normality. The distribution was tested for associations with possible antecedents of sexual risk. YBMSM (N = 600), aged 16–29 years, were recruited from a sexually transmitted infection clinic, located in the southern US. Men completed an extensive audio computer-assisted self-interview. Thirteen possible antecedents of sexual risk, as assessed by the index, were selected for analyses. The 8-item index formed a normal distribution with a mean of 4.77 (SD = 1.77). Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its 20^th annual A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The service is free and open to the public.
