Socio-Spatial Differentiation In The Sustainable City: A Mixed-Methods Assessment Of Residential Gardens In Metropolitan Portland, Oregon, Usa, Nathan Mcclintock, Dillon Mahmoudi, Michael Simpson, Jacinto Pereira Santos

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

As cities take center stage in developing and brokering strategies for sustainability, examining the uneven distribution of green infrastructure is crucial. Urban agriculture (UA) has gained a prominent role in urban greening and food system diversification strategies alike. Despite that it is the preeminent form of food production in North American cities, residential gardening has received little scholarly attention. Moreover, research on the intra-urban variability of home gardens is sparse. In this paper, we use a mixed-methods approach to assess the scale and scope of residential gardens in Portland, Oregon, a metropolitan region renowned for its innovations in sustainability. Using …

Transportation Cost Index As A Performance Measure For Transportation And Land Use Systems: New Approaches And Applications, Liming Wang, Huajie Yang, Jenny H. Liu

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research aims to fill gaps in existing multi-modal performance measures for transportation and land use systems:

  1. As a supplement/replacement of traffic-centric measures such as LOS, travel delay;
  2. Recent federal and state legislations put more emphases on using of performance measures in transportation planning & operation: MAP-21, Oregon Job and Transportation Act (OJTA);
  3. Existing performance measures for transportation and land use systems, although now numerous, have their own limitation (Table 1), and leave important aspects and policy areas uncovered, for example, the balance of transportation investment between different modes and across geographical areas as mandated by OJTA

Getting Outside The Supermarket Box: Alternatives To "Food Deserts", Megan Horst, Subhashni Raj, Catherine Brinkley Jan 2016

Getting Outside The Supermarket Box: Alternatives To "Food Deserts", Megan Horst, Subhashni Raj, Catherine Brinkley

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Supermarkets are often proposed as a solution to “food deserts” – places where access to healthy food appears limited. In places as diverse as New York City and Portland, Oregon, planners have incentivized supermarkets to locate in these under-served areas. However, there are some serious problems with both the notion of food deserts and the promotion of supermarkets as the answer. As an alternative, we propose that planners and their colleagues focus on community-based solutions, rather than strategies that mostly benefit corporations.

Is The Right To Bicycle A Civil Right? Synergies And Tensions Between The Transportation Justice Movement And Planning For Bicycling, Aaron Golub Jan 2016

Is The Right To Bicycle A Civil Right? Synergies And Tensions Between The Transportation Justice Movement And Planning For Bicycling, Aaron Golub

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter was inspired by a long-standing debate among transportation justice and equity advocates about the importance of investments in bicycle transportation as a goal of the transportation justice movement. Bicycle investments are notably absent in transportation equity analyses for regional plans (e.g. Metropolitan Transportation Commission, 2013), and from broader transportation justice discussions (for instance the word “bicycle” does not appear in the index of the overview of transportation justice practice published by the American Planning Association (Sanchez and Brenman, 2007). The transportation justice movement, with its lineage in the civil rights and environmental justice movements, focuses on improving the …

Voter turnout is shockingly low in elections for mayor and other local officials across the United States. For the most recent round of mayoral elections in America’s 30 largest cities, turnout of eligible citizens in 15 of them was less than 20%.

Education As The Weakest Institutional Link In Japan's Nuclear Regulation, Hiro Saito Jan 2016

Education As The Weakest Institutional Link In Japan's Nuclear Regulation, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Debates over the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster pointed to a set of institutional and organizational failures in Japan’s nuclear regulation as a primary cause of the disaster. While the Japanese government has implemented reforms to strengthen nuclear regulation, I argue that these reforms have largely left out the education system as a key institution that produces and distributes expertise necessary for nuclear regulation. First, the Japanese education system has traditionally produced only a small number of experts in the fields related to nuclear regulation, aligned top-ranked experts with the pro-nuclear government, and weakened the civil society’s capacity to mobilize counter-experts. …

Trends In Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Vs. Proprietary Applications, Vijay K. Agrawal, Vipin K. Agrawal, A. Ross Taylor

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This study examines factors valued by IS managers in deciding if COTS software is a viable alternative to proprietary software. The results indicate managers who anticipate increased usage of COTS packages in 5 years used the same top three factors in the formation of their decisions to adopt COTS as their colleagues who anticipated either zero change in COTS usage or an increased usage of proprietary software used in deciding not to adopt COTS software. Managers anticipating increased COTS usage had a statistically significant higher value for each of those items compared to managers not anticipating growth in COTS software.

Healthcare System-Use Behavior: A Systematic Review Of Its Determinants, Jiming Wu Jan 2016

Healthcare System-Use Behavior: A Systematic Review Of Its Determinants, Jiming Wu

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

To understand patient and physician behavior, researchers have investigated the determinants of using healthcare information systems. Although this stream of research has produced important findings, it has yet to appreciably advance our understanding of system-use behavior in healthcare. To fill this gap, the current paper employs a systematic review to synthesize past research, reveal the key determinants of healthcare system usage, and illuminate a deeper understanding of the topic. This study thus helps healthcare researchers expand their baseline knowledge of these core determinants and conduct more fruitful future research on system-use behavior in healthcare.

Physical Activity Promotion From The Social Cognitive Theory Perspective: An Examination Of Mobile Fitness Apps, Steven L. Maberry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The current study has expanded the scientific understanding of physical activity motivation through the use of smartphone mobile technology. With the emergent popularity of social media, software developers have begun incorporating components of social media into mobile fitness apps, which allow users to easily engage with peer support networks to obtain motivation for continued participation. Grounded in Bandura’s (1977) social cognitive theory, the study has also extended the physical activity knowledge base related to self-efficacy and peer and family support systems.

Four hundred sixty-seven adults (mean age: 35.8 years) completed an online survey, the results of which were used to …

"I Listen To Their Story, They Listen To My Comments, And Then I Pocket My Fee:" Sherlock Holmes As Rhetorical Equipment For Living, Andrew Cessna Jones Jan 2016

"I Listen To Their Story, They Listen To My Comments, And Then I Pocket My Fee:" Sherlock Holmes As Rhetorical Equipment For Living, Andrew Cessna Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study argues that Sherlock Holmes serves as rhetorical equipment for living. Using Kenneth Burke’s theory of symbolic appeal and the critical tool proposed in the essay “Literature as Equipment for Living,” I explore how Holmes responds to the rhetorical situation of early nineteenth century England and consider why the Holmes symbol continues to appeal to audiences. I conclude that rhetoric is a necessary component of the Sherlock Holmes symbol and suggest that Holmes’s famous method is rhetorical rather than syllogistic.

Caregiver Choice In Autism Intervention: Selections And Influential Factors, Hilary Lynn Adams Jan 2016

Caregiver Choice In Autism Intervention: Selections And Influential Factors, Hilary Lynn Adams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although research on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to increase, there is not yet a “cure” for the disorder. There is a lack of consensus regarding most effective treatments, much less an accepted treatment plan or course. Families may feel alone and lost in the treatment decision process. In order to best assist caregivers, psychologists must understand the selections caregivers make, their sources of information, and what influences them in their decision-making process. With this knowledge, clinicians may best effect change in caregiver choice by encouraging informed decision-making and use of empirically-based interventions. Thus, the purpose of the current study …

An International Crossover: Comparing The Chinese Basketball Association With The National Basketball Association, Allison J. Slusher Jan 2016

An International Crossover: Comparing The Chinese Basketball Association With The National Basketball Association, Allison J. Slusher

Honors Theses

This thesis compares the Chinese Basketball Association with the National Basketball Association in an in-depth comparison of how these organizations approach seven key aspects of sports management including commercialization, regular and post season scheduling, training, player acquisitions, players' and coaches' salaries, and players' and coaches' unions. This thesis also compares the histories of the CBA and NBA. The histories of these organizations serve to set the background information needed to understand how the CBA and NBA administer these seven aspects of sports management. Comparing these two organizations serves to prove that the CBA is run as a government bureaucracy used …

Boredom And Psychological Time Perspective On Cognition, Alyssa Erin Invergo Jan 2016

Boredom And Psychological Time Perspective On Cognition, Alyssa Erin Invergo

Honors Theses

This study investigated psychological time with regards to a memory recognition task. The participants rated images on a 5-point scale of attractiveness. There were two different conditions, one having 40 male faces and the other containing 40 female faces. After they finished rating the faces, they made a retrospective time estimate of how long they thought they spent viewing the faces. Following this they took the Multidimensional State Boredom Scale (MSBS) to test what state of boredom they were currently experiencing. Finally they performed a memory recognition test. We noticed statistically significant differences between the two conditions based on target …

Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone Jan 2016

Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone

Honors Theses

Immigration is a polemic subject in French society today. The 2005 riots in the banlieue and the government's response to the outraged and discontented immigrant populations brought forth a topic left out of public discourse for years before the heavily televised protests. At the forefront of this public debate surrounding identity and incorporation was one of France's largest immigrant populations, North Africans. Marginalization of a particular group often appears in the terms of social and cultural conflict. While this is true, incorporation of the culture of migrants and their representation in French society are not the only exogenous factors that …

Freedom Fighters: Stories From Freedom Summer 1964, Anna Mccollum

Honors Theses

Freedom Summer was a project conducted in Mississippi in 1964 as part of the civil rights movement. It involved hundreds of volunteers and members of the Council of Federated Organizations working to promote education and voter registration among the African American community across the state. The researcher found and interviewed veterans of Freedom Summer in order to write a series of profile stories centered around that subject. She visited them each in their hometowns (besides one phone interview with a woman from Iowa), photographed most of them and spoke to some of their peers for second and third sources. Through …

Gender Rules: Differences In Male And Female First-Year Undergraduate Adherence To Campus Alcohol Policy, Ashley Maiolatesi Jan 2016

Gender Rules: Differences In Male And Female First-Year Undergraduate Adherence To Campus Alcohol Policy, Ashley Maiolatesi

Honors Theses

Although differences in both men's and women's risk-taking and alcohol consumption have been respectively examined in previous research, the relationship between the two has not been thoroughly documented. While there have been studies on differences between male and female drinking habits, including those on amount and frequency of consumption, as well as studies documenting how women felt about both risk-taking and gender differences in morality, these factors are rarely, if ever, expressly linked. The current study aims to test past research regarding women's traditional hesitation towards engaging in risky behavior and rebelling against policy through the study of behavioral outcomes …

The Role Of A National Intelligence Estimate In Advancing U.S. Interests And Principles: A Case Study Of Human Trafficking In Brazil, Audrey Mooney Jan 2016

The Role Of A National Intelligence Estimate In Advancing U.S. Interests And Principles: A Case Study Of Human Trafficking In Brazil, Audrey Mooney

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the role National Intelligence Estimates [NIEs] in a current world scenario—human trafficking in Brazil, and the value NIEs add to the Intelligence Community [IC] and US policy makers. The IC uses NIEs as a tool to assess future implications that actions could have on the United States and how those actions can impact U.S. interests. NIEs became prominent when the National Security Act of 1947 was established, which highlighted the need for new and alternative analysis within the IC. This thesis will also investigate how approaches known as Structured Analytic Techniques [SATs] …

Trade Policy Formation In Europe: Disparities Between The Eu-15 States And The Cee New Member States, Beau Bettiga

Honors Theses

Trade preference formation has been the deciding factor in the process of creating and reforming the Common Agricultural Policy. The process of reforming the policy created a discrepancy between the benefits received by the original European Union-15 member states and the late accession central and eastern European new member states. This paper analyses how trade preferences have shaped the reforms of the CAP and how the CAP has been poorly implemented in the late accession states. Poland will be used a case study to analyze how the CAP has been poorly formed in regards to late accession states' needs because …

Food For Thought: The Role Of Food In Romantic Relationships, Breana Cook Jan 2016

Food For Thought: The Role Of Food In Romantic Relationships, Breana Cook

Honors Theses

Food is a necessary component of our lives as we need it to live. However, food can be seen as a relatively important, unconscious or not, factor in interpersonal relationships. We investigated the role of food and cooking in modern, romantic relationships through surveying 68 individuals from a junior college in the southern region of the United States. We predicted that there was a connection between food and dating and relationships and concluded this by exploring the social stigmas surrounding food, the gendered perceptions of these stigmas, and perception of food in a certain context to assess the meaning of …
