Realtors, Resistance, And White Roses, Casey Trattner Dec 2016

Realtors, Resistance, And White Roses, Casey Trattner

SURGE

I remember driving to school with my mother, eyes wide. I thought, as we passed by buildings and stores and little cafes with seats outside, that the small suburban town we were driving through was beautiful.

And when I told my mom, she looked at me out of the corner of her eyes and told me:

“Did I ever tell you how Dad and I were going to move here?”

“Here?” I said. “No… I don’t think so.”

“We were looking at a house that we both liked, but when I asked the real estate agent about how I heard …

From Love Canal To The Flint Water Crisis: Government, Public Opinion, And Environmental Crises, Sarah Hughey

Honors Theses

After the rise of the modern-day environmental movement, environmentalism in the United States focused more and more on issues and crises related to the areas in which people lived and to the aspects that impacted public health. In particular, the crisis at Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York during the late 1970s and early 1980s provided a starting point to the awareness and activism of modern environmental history. Recently, an environmental crisis related to drinking water occurred in Flint, Michigan in the mid-2010s that showcases how various aspects of the environmental movement have developed over time since the Love …

The Authentic Workplace: Theatrical Practices In The Corporate World, Katherine Dumas

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

"We are beginning to bring our whole selves to work… That type of separation probably never existed… Instead of putting on some kind of fake “all-work persona,” I think we benefit from expressing our truth, talking about personal situations, and acknowledging that professional decisions are emotionally driven."(1) In her award-winning 2013 book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, Sheryl Sandberg explains the movement in the corporate world to look for emotional intelligence in potential employees before they are hired. Qualities such as this are nurtured and practiced regularly in the world of theatre, as evidenced by the …

Use It Or Lose It: Canadian Identity And The Construction Of Arctic Security Policy, Michael P. Mccormack

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the specific factors that drive state action in Canadian Arctic security policy, particularly in relation to securitization of the Arctic region and historical factors that influence decision-making. The purpose of this research is to develop stronger linkages between securitization processes and actual policymaking. When studying the Arctic as a defined geographical space, we see considerable differences between Arctic states when it comes to how cultural and historical attachment to the Arctic region may serve as a selling point for the ability of national governments to justify allocation of defense resources to their respective publics. Using the Canadian …

Contributing Factors To Perspectives On Gun Regulations, Syd Kotar Dec 2016

Contributing Factors To Perspectives On Gun Regulations, Syd Kotar

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

With a rising amount of gun violence, issues of stricter gun regulations have been brought to the government’s attention. Location, gender, and ideology all contribute to how one perceives the individual use of firearms, and believes how much the government should intervene. This paper will explore the different variables such as the three listed above that affect one’s opinions on government intervention concerning stricter gun regulations. The results of data analysis from the ANES 2012 studies conclude that the more conservative one self identifies as, one would want either the same or less government intervention concerning stricter gun regulations. Data …

Has The American Electorate Changed Its Concept Of An Ideal President? Candidate Traits And Their Impact On Voter Favorability, Bennett Tuleja Dec 2016

Has The American Electorate Changed Its Concept Of An Ideal President? Candidate Traits And Their Impact On Voter Favorability, Bennett Tuleja

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Psychology research has exemplified that leadership is revered largely by society as a masculine characteristic. It is not surprising to find that past studies surrounding the issue of what characteristics the American people look for in a Presidential candidate find that more masculine characteristics, in particular strong leadership qualities, have an impact on how Americans perceive presidential candidates and utilize those perceptions when casting their vote. However, in the ever changing political landscape of the United States, especially given the furthering of women in politics, these masculine tides are seemingly bound to change. Hillary Clinton, for instance, embodies this change …

American Voter Attitudes Towards Divided Government, Tyler Ferrari

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Divided government has been a major part of American politics for decades, and it has made governing often difficult at times. Recently, this type of government has proven to be especially frustrating for many voters, so why do they vote to keep this government? Are there partisan reasons for voting for a split ticket, or is the answer more fundamental? This paper highlights the facts and reasons for polarization, ranging from ideology to trust in the federal government as a whole. This paper utilizes the ANES 2012 Study to illustrate that it is not just political ideology that plays a …

African American Culture In Historical Art Museums: Remembering A Buried Tragic Past, Lana Sarkisian Dec 2016

African American Culture In Historical Art Museums: Remembering A Buried Tragic Past, Lana Sarkisian

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The transparency of reality reflecting in art often represents a false tragedy in African American history because of the lack of preservation and representation due to a predominantly white dominion, ultimately leaving the veracity of their history to consign to oblivion. There is a common thread of forgetfulness with the retrieval of art in today’s society that embodies the African American community. Although artist Fred Wilson does not explicitly assert his assessment to the lack of black representation on account of cultural differences, he vocalizes how African American culture is indoctrinated to the public in a white, supremacist national narrative …

The Minister-Elder Relationship Within “Churches That Work”, Steve Cloer

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

This essay is the summary of a research project focused on how the minister-elder relationship in Churches of Christ can facilitate missional transformation in an established church. Twenty-five reputable congregations of Churches of Christ were researched that were profiled as “Churches That Work” by The Christian Chronicle from 2006-2013. A survey was conducted of these congregations’ elders and ministers assessing their leadership practices and perspectives. Four congregations were selected based on results of the survey and qualitative strategies of interviewing, focus groups, observation, and document gathering were used. Five patterns of a missional polity developed: elders as nurturing pastors, ministers …

Mapping The Impact Of Intensive Rotational Grazing On Soil Fertility Over Time On Greenbrier Farms In Pickens County, South Carolina, Emily Kirby

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

Intensive rotational grazing (IRG) is a management technique that involves a more intentional management approach which includes increased paddock numbers, shorter grazing periods, larger livestock presence per acre, and longer periods of rest on pastures. Potential advantages of this management technique include improved forage quality, greater yield, decreased erosion, stable production during adverse growing condition, and improved soil fertility. This study collects and analyzes data to understand the impact of rotational grazing on soil fertility as measured by SOC (soil organic carbon) and SON (soil organic nitrogen) on Greenbrier Farms in Easley, South Carolina. This study analyzes the transition from …

Mapping Trends In Bike Theft On Furman Campus From 2001 To 2016, Tindall Ouverson

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

The Furman University Police Department categorizes bike thefts as "bike larcenies" in their reporting system. However, most bike thefts on a college campus are not for monetary gain but as a means of transportation for opportunistic students. Though the goal of student bike thieves may be to get to class on time, the United States Department of Justice classifies them as "joyriders". Campus bike theft is a concern because it results in a monetary loss for students.

The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton Dec 2016

The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

Resilience to climate change serves as an indicator of the effectiveness of organic farming practices. Resilience means that an area is able to return to a stable state after a disturbance. In this context, it means that the area is able to function regularly even in the face of climate change, an instance that affects species health and biodiversity. By mapping the locations of organic farms across the southeastern United States along with the resilience scores of areas as evaluated by The Nature Conservancy and comparing this map to farm locations and biodiversity measures, we are able to determine the …
