Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe Dec 2016

Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe

Dissertations and Theses

Problem alcohol use has far-reaching economic, intra-, and interpersonal consequences. One particularly hazardous form of drinking pertains to the consumption of alcohol as a means of regulating stress, or drinking to cope. As such, it is critical to identify pathways through which stress-related alcohol use occurs, as well as protective factors which may mitigate the aforementioned consequences. To achieve this, I conducted three studies examining these topics at multiple levels of analysis among two at risk populations for engaging in problematic drinking: College students and military service members. Study 1 is a published manuscript examining the association between personality, a …

School Violence In China: A Multi-Level Analysis Of Student Victimization In Rural Middle Schools, Jennifer Adams, Emily C. Hannum

Emily C. Hannum

Motivation: Physical victimization at school is little studied in impoverished developing country contexts. Moreover, the role of school and classroom contexts as risk factors remains poorly understood.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to investigate the prevalence of physical victimization in rural Chinese middle schools as well as the individual, teacher/classroom, and school level risk factors associated with experiencing physical victimization.

Design: We use two waves of longitudinal, representative survey data to perform a multi-level logistic regression analysis of physical victimization among middle school students from 100 villages in one of China’s poorest provinces. We focus on …

De Graauw Studies The Role Of Nonprofits On Immigration., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Immigration is, and always has been, a hot issue. And it’s gotten even hotter in the last few years, both in Europe and in the U.S. More times than not, this topic seems to be discussed in emotional rather than rational terms. That is why we need scholars who look closely at the facts and tell us what we really need to know.

One of those scholars is Dr. Els de Graauw. An assistant professor in the Department of Political Science in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College, de Graauw has an interesting personal sto- ry …

Policy Dissemination: Public Administration Theory And International Organizations | A Case Study On The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities In The Kingdom Of Morocco, Rachelle Ann Wilson Dec 2016

Policy Dissemination: Public Administration Theory And International Organizations | A Case Study On The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities In The Kingdom Of Morocco, Rachelle Ann Wilson

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

With the advent of international organizations comes international law. Unprecedented at such a global and influential level, there is no theoretical framework within public administration explicitly focused on administrative structure and strategies for the implementation of international law. Consequently, the current administrative literature and theoretical framework must be looked to and transposed, as much as possible, to the international stage. This paper explores public administration theory and how it would manifest if applied to international policy implementation. By taking a closer look into the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its implementation strategy within the …

Examining Style In Virgin Branch Corrugated Ceramics, Shannon Horton, Karen Harry Dec 2016

Examining Style In Virgin Branch Corrugated Ceramics, Shannon Horton, Karen Harry

Anthropology Faculty Research

In this article, we examine variation in the corrugation styles of ceramics from the Virgin Branch Puebloan culture. These ceramics were recovered from two regions: the Moapa Valley of southern Nevada and the Mt. Dellenbaugh area of northwestern Arizona. Three wares—Shivwits, Moapa, and Tusayan—are examined, each of which was produced in different locations. Similarities and differences in corrugation styles between these wares are used to investigate ceramic learning frameworks and the nature of the pottery production and distribution system.

Encouraging Reflective Practices In Doctoral Students Through Research Journals, Amy Orange Dec 2016

Encouraging Reflective Practices In Doctoral Students Through Research Journals, Amy Orange

The Qualitative Report

This study developed after I read numerous research journals created by my doctoral students. At times, students included considerable amounts of detail, reflecting on their research processes and their roles as researchers. At other times, the journals appeared to be a mere afterthought, seemingly completed in an evening to satisfy the requirement and get a grade. And, as with many things in the introductory qualitative research course, students expressed a need for more structured guidelines for their journals. In response, I developed a set of guidelines and prompts students could use to guide their journal entries. With this study, I …

Community Resource Audit Of Low-Income And Poor Children, Jesse Caldwell

LIS Student Conference

Poverty is on the rise within the United States. Public Libraries located in large cities and rural communities may be seeing an increase in usage from children who identify as low-income or poor. Using national statistics from the United States and local statistics from Lawrenceburg, Indiana , I will explain how poverty is on the rise within the United States. I will then outline how to discover local poverty statistics and how those statistics can be used to directly engage the low-income and poor population within a library district.

The Invisible: Serving Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, A Sensitivity Training, Rachel Combs Dec 2016

The Invisible: Serving Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, A Sensitivity Training, Rachel Combs

LIS Student Conference

According to the CDC, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability (2008). In the US, the prevalence is estimated at 1 in 68 births. Academic libraries need to be aware of this growing population so that we can educate library staff and be prepared to help people who learn and communicate differently. College students with disabilities face inequity when using the academic library, including the physical space, the library website, programming or lack thereof, restrictive loan periods, and resources that aren’t available in formats that they need. Academic libraries must be proactive and learn to recognize and minimize barriers, educate library …

This poster presents the findings from my Community Resource Audit in LIS 601, which focused on teen library users. During my research, I found that teens usually seek information on the following topics: Health, Career Information, Homework Help, Reading Material, News, and General Curiosity. Along with addressing these needs, my presentation will also discuss barriers to teen access, including reasons why they might choose not to seek information. Finally, I will present my "Teen Resource Guide," which was designed to help teens conduct research on each of the aforementioned topics.

The Teen Toolkit: Providing Reliable Resources To Students, Jaclyn Spraetz

LIS Student Conference

This poster highlights the Community Resource Audit I created on teenagers’ information seeking behaviors. By conducting a literature review as well as distributing a survey to teens, I found that while they want to be informed, they often do not seek out many different types of informational resources. To respond, I created an online guide that presents reliable open resources to help students with class projects and additional outlets to help them stay informed on current events.

Subjective outcome evaluation approach was adopted to examine the students’ views of program content, program instructors, and program effectiveness. Consistent with previous studies, results showed that students generally perceived the program positively, and positive relationships were found amongst the three domains of evaluation. Multiple regression analyses showed that perceived program content and instructor qualities were significant predictors and could explain 35% of the variance in program effectiveness perceived by …

Do Credit Ratings Matter? An Examination Of The Relationship Between Sovereign Ratings And Capital Flows Pre And Post Financial Crisis, Greg Violante

Economics Department Student Scholarship

This paper examines the relationship between sovereign credit ratings and international capital flows to emerging market economies (EMEs). More specifically, it analyzes how ratings impact capital flows (FDI and portfolio investment) before and after the 2007-2008 financial crisis. This study breaks the data into two samples, pre-crisis (1995-2006), and the post crisis (2007-2015). After using a System GMM method for 20 EMEs, the paper compares the pre- and post- financial crisis credit rating coefficients. The results indicate that the ratings have become more impactful overtime, for both FDI and portfolio investment, although the coefficients are not statistically different. Interestingly however, …
