Attributes Of Police Vehicle Crashes, David Lambert Dec 2016

Attributes Of Police Vehicle Crashes, David Lambert

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

While overall on-duty law enforcement deaths has decreased moderately from over 160 in 1980 to a level under 120 per year in the late 2000s, fatalities by motor vehicle collisions have steadily increased. This descriptive analysis examines police vehicle crashes during specific conditions such as emergency response, road surface, lighting, and weather in a large statewide police agency. Police vehicle crashes are most likely to occur on dry roads, in daylight conditions, and in clear weather on weekdays as opposed to weekends. Weather and lighting conditions are not the most frequent factors associated with cruiser crashes in this examination.

A Personal Manifesto: What Is Justice?, Kacy Earnest Spears Dec 2016

A Personal Manifesto: What Is Justice?, Kacy Earnest Spears

Social Justice Class Papers

To me, social justice is a complex definition with several clauses. The most concise definition to me would be: a discipline and practice that strives toward social equality for all using grace, acceptance, and protecting everyone’s individual rights. That’s not even a complete definition. There are so many clauses to social justice, such as: knowing the difference between palliative and long term care, knowing which is best for the situation, comparing the possible outcomes of your work and choosing the option that best suits the needs of the people you’re serving, knowing the culture, etc. All this to say that …

Ethnobiology In The City: Embracing The Urban Ecological Moment, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley Dec 2016

Ethnobiology In The City: Embracing The Urban Ecological Moment, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

More than half the world's human population resides in cities (United Nations Economic and Social Affairs Population Division 2015). Unpacking this singular statistic, it becomes clear that people come to live in urban environments via numerous routes. Some have lived in cities all their lives and are descendants of city dwellers. In other cases, cities spread and encircle them (Hurley et al. 2008; Unnikrishnan and Nagendra 2015). Increasingly, rural residents are national and transnational migrants to cities, pushed by armed conflict, natural disasters, and economic need or opportunity (United Nations Economic and Social Affairs Population Division 2013). In the case …

Cross-Cultural Differences In Concrete And Abstract Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Campaigns: Perceived Message Clarity And Perceived Csr As Mediators, Soojung Kim, Jiyang Bae

Communication Faculty Publications

Guided by Hofstede’s (Culture’s consequences: Comparing values, behaviors, institutions, and organizations across nations, 2001) cultural value of uncertainty avoidance, this study tests whether the effect of concrete vs. abstract CSR campaign messages on attitude toward the company and purchase intention varies by cultural difference in uncertainty avoidance and whether such effect is mediated by the perceived clarity of the message and perceived CSR. Lab experiments were performed in the U.S. and South Korea with American and Korean college students. Two-way ANOVA results revealed the relative advantage of concrete message on attitude toward the company and purchase intention among Koreans (vs. …

Mean Hydroclimatic And Hydrological Conditions During Two Climatic Modes In The Devils Lake Basin, North Dakota (Usa), Paul E. Todhunter Dec 2016

Mean Hydroclimatic And Hydrological Conditions During Two Climatic Modes In The Devils Lake Basin, North Dakota (Usa), Paul E. Todhunter

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

Proxy variables from palaeolimnological studies of lakes in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America have been used to infer large oscillations during the late Holocene between longer periods of high-salinity–dry conditions and shorter periods of low-salinity–wet conditions producing a normative pattern marked by the absence of hydrological stability. Studies of the historical rise in lake level at Devils Lake have identified 1980 as a transition point between two such hydroclimatic modes. This study uses multiple datasets to characterize the mean hydroclimatological and hydrological conditions of these two climatic modes. Mode 1 is a cool and dry phase, and mode …
