Ego Functions, Defenses, And Countertransference: A Beginning School Social Work Student’S Way To Professional And Personal Growth, Hili Tsarfati

International Journal of School Social Work

The school social worker is often challenged by the complexity of the child-school-family paradigm, where the therapeutic relationship is one of the most central parts of treatment. Through this relationship, social workers attempt to recognize their clients’ internal conflicts as well as their clients’ relationships with others. In this paper the writer examines the perceptions and reality of the versatile role of the school social worker. She reflects upon, describes, and analyzes her therapeutic relationship with Monique, one of her more challenging cases during her first year as a social worker in training placed at an alternative high school in …

The Diversity Of School Social Work In Germany: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Kathrin F. Beck

International Journal of School Social Work

Children in Germany are confronted with an increasing societal inequality and disorientation that makes it difficult for them to cope with life. School social work in Germany is an intensive form of cooperation between the institutionally divided systems of child and youth welfare and education. The aim of this article is threefold: to present (1) relevant aspects of both systems, (2) the diversity of terms being used to describe this specific form of cooperation and (3) an exemplary selection of concepts of school social work. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was done, taking publications between 2000 and 2016 …

The Qualitative Report

This work is an example of critical autoethnographic study of the writer’s personal experiences. In this particular study, I share my experiences while wearing a headscarf in Turkey, and my desire to settle down in United States in order to pursue my academic career. Due to the political changes in Turkey and United States, my experiences while wearing a headscarf in academia and social environments triggered me to write a reflection about them. In this article, my goal is to deconstruct the symbolic meanings of the Muslim headscarf in social spaces. In addition, the piece will show my “double consciousness" …

An Expose Of The Relationship Between Paradigm, Method And Design In Research, Godswill Makombe Prof Dec 2017

An Expose Of The Relationship Between Paradigm, Method And Design In Research, Godswill Makombe Prof

The Qualitative Report

It is crucial that any research inquiry be guided by a paradigm. However, many early career researchers do not mention the research paradigm guiding their inquiry. Furthermore, qualitative and quantitative methods are sometimes erroneously referred to as research paradigms or research designs. Experienced researchers often use the terms research paradigm, research methods and research design in a loose and confusing manner. Although it is reasonable to assume that experienced researchers do understand the distinction and relationship between the three concepts, the loose use of the concepts leads to confusion among early career researchers, especially Master’s and PhD students. By using …

Experiences Of Lnu Neophyte Teachers: Cues For A Viable Mentoring Program, Evelyn B. Aguirre, Solomon D. Faller Jr.

The Qualitative Report

The usefulness of teachers’ mentoring program cannot be underestimated. Some universities and colleges in the Philippines have been implementing this kind of program with different approaches, content, and scope. The extent of mentoring programs to improve teaching careers has been studied here and abroad. Results remain inconclusive. This case study with a phenomenological peg has explored the lived experiences of neophyte teachers through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Their experiences in the first years of teaching were characterized by uncertainties, anxieties, struggles, and difficulties emanating from their lack of expertise on various aspects related to teaching practice, lack of …

Aspirations Of The Out-Of-School Youth: Barangay Napara-An, Salcedo, Eastern Samar Perspective, Apolonio I. Machica Jr., Agnesia A. Machica Dec 2017

Aspirations Of The Out-Of-School Youth: Barangay Napara-An, Salcedo, Eastern Samar Perspective, Apolonio I. Machica Jr., Agnesia A. Machica

The Qualitative Report

Aspiration is an ingredient in achieving something in life. It makes or unmakes success. Aspirations differ among the youth. Rural youth aspire for education because through education they can fulfill their dreams in life (Tafere, 2015). The existence of the out-of-school youths, however, along the peripheries of educational institutions in Barangay Napara-an prompted this case study to explore the aspirations of these out-of-school youths of the rural barangay. Eight participants who were not enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program were selected through the assistance of ALS personnel. Data gathered from the participants through personal interview were compared with …

Including Rigor And Artistry In Case Study As A Strategic Qualitative Methodology, Prema Gaikwad Dec 2017

Including Rigor And Artistry In Case Study As A Strategic Qualitative Methodology, Prema Gaikwad

The Qualitative Report

Case study has emerged as a popular research design among the other variations of qualitative designs. This theoretical research study presents the nature of case study as a stand-alone qualitative research methodology, which has an in-built flexibility that is unique among the other qualitative approaches. Literature points to two approaches of case study within which criteria for rigor through clear and complete description of the research design can be applied. A qualitative case study also lends itself to creativity or artistry with a freedom to be multi-method in nature. Being simultaneously rigorous and artistic is possible in case study through …

Lived Experiences Of Battered Women In Ozamiz City, Philippines, Cynthia S. Superable Dec 2017

Lived Experiences Of Battered Women In Ozamiz City, Philippines, Cynthia S. Superable

The Qualitative Report

Domestic violence is prevalent not only in the Philippines but also in other countries. This study explored how battered women viewed their experiences as victims using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach (van Manen, 2016). Using purposive sampling and snowball technique, the study identified six battered women who were interviewed using researcher-made guide questions. The responses generated from the interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology which aimed to understand the lived experiences of the participants. Four central themes were identified, namely recurrence of physical abuse, endurance to pain, disempowerment of women, and love for family. Battered women prefer to …

Addressing The Ten Commonly Asked Questions About Qualitative Research In The Philippines, Safary Wa-Mbaleka

The Qualitative Report

There is no doubt that the need for qualitative research has increased and has been felt all around the world. Once feared, detested, or even not much valued by some, qualitative research has now become the rare bird many people are trying to catch. Unfortunately, as more and more people and institutions try to embrace qualitative research, maybe more damage is being done in the process because of the lack of solid understanding of qualitative research. To pave a strong way to excellence in qualitative research conduct and dissemination, it is important to have an idea of the current state …

A Cutting-Plane Method For Contiguity-Constrained Spatial Aggregation, Johannes Oehrlein, Jan-Henrik Haunert Dec 2017

A Cutting-Plane Method For Contiguity-Constrained Spatial Aggregation, Johannes Oehrlein, Jan-Henrik Haunert

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Aggregating areas into larger regions is a common problem in spatial planning, geographic information science, and cartography. The aim can be to group administrative areal units into electoral districts or sales territories, in which case the problem is known as districting. In other cases, area aggregation is seen as a generalization or visualization task, which aims to reveal spatial patterns in geographic data. Despite these different motivations, the heart of the problem is the same: given a planar partition, one wants to aggregate several elements of this partition to regions. These often must have or exceed a particular size, be …

Insight Provenance For Spatiotemporal Visual Analytics: Theory, Review, And Guidelines, Andreas Hall, Paula Ahonen-Rainio, Kirsi Virrantaus

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Research on provenance, which focuses on different ways to describe and record the history of changes and advances made throughout an analysis process, is an integral part of visual analytics. This paper focuses on providing the provenance of insight and rationale through visualizations while emphasizing, first, that this entails a profound understanding of human cognition and reasoning and that, second, the special nature of spatiotemporal data needs to be acknowledged in this process. A recently proposed human reasoning framework for spatiotemporal analysis, and four guidelines for the creation of visualizations that provide the provenance of insight and rationale published in …

Vgi In Surveying Engineering: Introducing Collaborative Cloud Land Surveying, Ioannis Sofos, Vassilios Vescoukis, Maria Tsakiri

Journal of Spatial Information Science

olunteered geographic information (VGI) has enabled many innovative applications in various scientific fields. This paper introduces a new framework called "collaborative cloud-based land surveying" (CCLS) that uses VGI principles for data sharing among surveyor engineers to boost the productivity and improve the quality of their applications. A cloud-based spatio-temporal data repository is presented, aiming to facilitate the sharing of VGI among surveyor engineers. A fully-functional distributed software application has been developed and used to apply CCLS in a large-scale land surveying project run by the Greek Ministry of Culture, which involves the mapping of the historic center of Athens. Sailing: Cognition, Action, Communication, Thora Tenbrink, Frank Dylla Dec 2017

Sailing: Cognition, Action, Communication, Thora Tenbrink, Frank Dylla

Journal of Spatial Information Science

How do humans perceive and think about space, and how can this be represented adequately? For everyday activities such as locating objects or places, route planning, and the like, many insights have been gained over the past few decades, feeding into theories of spatial cognition and frameworks for spatial information science. In this paper, we explore sailing as a more specialized domain that has not yet been considered in this way, but has a lot to offer precisely because of its peculiarities. Sailing involves ways of thinking about space that are not normally required (or even acquired) in everyday life. …

Quantifying Space, Understanding Minds: A Visual Summary Approach, Mark Simpson, Kai-Florian Richter, Jan Oliver Wallgrün, Alexander Klippel

Journal of Spatial Information Science

This paper presents an illustrated, validated taxonomy of research that compares spatial measures to human behavior. Spatial measures quantify the spatial characteristics of environments, such as the centrality of intersections in a street network or the accessibility of a room in a building from all the other rooms. While spatial measures have been of interest to spatial sciences, they are also of importance in the behavioral sciences for use in modeling human behavior. A high correlation between values for spatial measures and specific behaviors can provide insights into an environment's legibility, and contribute to a deeper understanding of human spatial …
