Actual Vs. Perceived Body Composition And How Body Image Impacts College Students, Kiera Papish, Pyper Newton Dec 2017

Actual Vs. Perceived Body Composition And How Body Image Impacts College Students, Kiera Papish, Pyper Newton

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

It has been estimated that up to two thirds of young women and one third of young men experience significant dissatisfaction with their body size, shape, condition, or appearance. Body image dissatisfaction, weight concerns, eating problems, and physical attractiveness have become especially significant issues on college campuses due to the stresses accompanied with this major transition in a young person’s life. The purpose of this IRB approved quantitative study was to investigate perceived body composition compared to actual composition in college students. Participants were asked to complete three surveys that took a total of 20 minutes or less. These surveys …

Speech And Language Intervention For Schizophrenia: An Interdisciplinary Survey Study, Tori Cook Dec 2017

Speech And Language Intervention For Schizophrenia: An Interdisciplinary Survey Study, Tori Cook

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

According to the Scope of Practice for speech-language pathologists (SLPs), set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, SLPs are responsible for offering therapy to individuals with psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia often struggle with social use of language which may lead to difficulty maintaining relationships and employment. These individuals may also experience negative stigma as a result of expressive and receptive language difficulties. Although the treatment of schizophrenia has traditionally remained in the realm of psychiatry, some studies have shown that individuals with schizophrenia can benefit from speech-language therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine schizophrenia …

Using Downloads And Citations To Evaluate Journals, Alex Wood-Doughty, Ted C. Bergstrom, Douglas G. Steigerwald Dec 2017

Using Downloads And Citations To Evaluate Journals, Alex Wood-Doughty, Ted C. Bergstrom, Douglas G. Steigerwald

Ted C Bergstrom

Download rates of academic journals have joined citation rates as commonly used
measures of research influence. But in what ways and to what extent do the two
measures differ? This paper examines six years of download data for more than #12;ve
thousand journals subscribed to by the University of California system. While download
rates of journals are highly correlated with citation rates, the average ratio of
downloads to citations varies substantially among academic disciplines. We #12;find that,
typically, the ratio of a journal's downloads to citations depends positively on its impact
factor. Surprisingly, we #12;find that, controlling for citation rates, …

They then reassess key assumptions, address criticisms of developmental theory and its place in education, and suggest possible new directions.

Incorporating Videos And Related Digital Assignments In A Child Development Course, Pamela Schuetze Ph.D. Dec 2017

Incorporating Videos And Related Digital Assignments In A Child Development Course, Pamela Schuetze Ph.D.

Fostering Innovation in Teaching with Technology (FITT) Academy

Project Scope:

In order to fully appreciate child development, it is essential for students to be exposed to children of a variety of ages which is best achieved by observing children. However, due to numerous logistical challenges, it is difficult to conduct live, in-person observations of children. Furthermore, in order to fully discuss concepts relevant to the study of child development in class, students need to familiarize themselves with the concept prior to the class meeting. One method for achieving this is to partially "flip" the class so that students watch a video lecture that describes the concepts prior to …

A Cultural Comparison Of The Facial Inference Process, Janine K. Swiney, Anthony J. Stahelski

Student Published Works

The purpose of this study was to compare emotion and personality trait attributions to facial expression between American and Indian samples. Data were collected using Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Each picture was randomly presented for 10 seconds followed by four randomized questions about the individual in the picture. The first question asked participants to identify the emotion shown from a list of six emotions (anger, disgust, …

Faith Development Beyond Religion: The Ngo As Site Of Islamic Reform, Nermmen Mouftah

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Anthropological field studies of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in their unique cultural and political contexts. Cultures of Doing Good: Anthropologists and NGOs serves as a foundational text to advance a growing subfield of social science inquiry: the anthropology of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Thorough introductory chapters provide a short history of NGO anthropology, address how the study of NGOs contributes to anthropology more broadly, and examine ways that anthropological studies of NGOs expand research agendas spawned by other disciplines. In addition, the theoretical concepts and debates that have anchored the analysis of NGOs since they entered scholarly discourse after World War II …

Studying Abroad With A Mental Illness, Meghan E. O'Donnell Dec 2017

Studying Abroad With A Mental Illness, Meghan E. O'Donnell

SURGE

Whenever anybody asks me about my experience studying abroad, I lie. I tell them that it was transformative, that I returned a more confident, learned, and enlightened person. I tell them all of the things I wish were true, pretending that all of the dreams I had about how studying abroad would affect me were actually the reality of my experience. [excerpt]

Celebration Of Title Ix, Kimberly Ennis Kuiper, Tanja Vierrether Dec 2017

Celebration Of Title Ix, Kimberly Ennis Kuiper, Tanja Vierrether

WS 6800/MC 6400 Women's Studies Archive Project

We questioned how BGSU celebrated the anniversaries of the acceptance of Title IX. In 1972, Title IX was passed, prohibiting sexual discrimination in any educational program or activity that receives federal financial aid. It was created to help eliminate gender discrimination in the educational and athletic system. In the archive, we found folders filled with information and images of the anniversaries of the passing of Title IX and were pleased to focus on the celebration. Title IX positively affected the people of BGSU, creating a more balanced playing field for all. We chose to narrow our scope of research to …

Journal Conversations: Building The Research Self-Efficacy Of An Aboriginal Early Career Academic, Michelle L. Dickson Dec 2017

Journal Conversations: Building The Research Self-Efficacy Of An Aboriginal Early Career Academic, Michelle L. Dickson

The Qualitative Report

This paper shows how I used my research journal mainly as a reflective tool throughout the process of applying for and completing a PhD. Embarking on a PhD can be daunting for anyone and I was challenged by my lack of academic self-efficacy. In the absence of a formal academic mentor my research journal became my confidante, a tool that helped me make progress at times when barriers to research seemed insurmountable. It helped me decrease the cognitive dissonance I was experiencing about issues of subjectivity/objectivity and the positioning of my self in the research. This paper shares research journal …

Analyzing The Legislative Productivity Of Congress During The Obama Administration, Zachary Hunkins Dec 2017

Analyzing The Legislative Productivity Of Congress During The Obama Administration, Zachary Hunkins

Honors Theses

Our nation looks to Congress to solve problems by producing legislation. Four congressional sessions took place during the eight years of the Obama administration; these were the 111th (2009-2011), 112th (2011-2013), 113th (2013-2015), and 114th (2015-2017). These four congressional sessions were often labeled and stigmatized as some of the least productive sessions in our nation’s history. This raises the questions, what explains legislative productivity? What variables effect it? Were the four sessions that took place during the Obama administration that ineffective? How do these sessions compare to sessions that took place during past presidential administrations? This …
