Oralité Et Création : Les Modalités D’Insertion Des Genres Urbains Dans La Production Orale Bobo, Alain Sanou

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The new genres of the literature pose to researchers the challenge to constantly adjust their analytical tool to understand not only their function, but also how the social body integrate these new elements. The objective searched in this study is to see how an urban creature, the Jɛkulu, has been gradually integrated in the Bobo creature. This study is the continuation of a research conducted since some years on the new oral genres in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso and how they contribute to the consolidation of an urban identity.

Enhancing Paternal Engagement In A Coparenting Paradigm, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle D. Pruett, Carolyn P. Cowan, Philip A. Cowan

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Despite the benefits for children and families of fathers who are involved positively with their children, most parenting programs in the United States and globally focus on and collect evaluation data from mothers almost exclusively. Engaging fathers is still viewed as a complex endeavor that is only somewhat successful. In this article, we summarize what is known about engaging fathers in parenting programs, then argue that programs are most effective when coparenting is the focus early in family formation. We rely on two decades of the Supporting Father Involvement program as an example of an initiative that has been effective …

Newsroom Convergence Of Print And Online Media: A Study Of The Gulf News And Alittihad In The Uae, Ahmed Saddiq Mohamed Mansoori

Philosophy Dissertations

The media industry in the UAE, like elsewhere in the world, is experiencing significant changes due to the innovations brought by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Newsrooms are especially the center of such changes, forcing media owners and managers to recognize that convergence of print and online media is inevitable to sustain their newspapers. This research intends to develop an assessment method to determine how newspapers are performing in a convergent media environment. To investigate the three types of newsroom convergence levels (coordination, cross-media, and full integration); the study develops an assessment model for the ten dimensions of newsroom convergence …

For the survey of the poems of our corpus, we will be inspired by the literary stylistics. By means of the structurings axiologiques, it will be possible to us to seize the significance of the poems that resides in the passage of the attachment to the detachment, of the melioration to the pejoration (poetry of Somaïla Sawadogo), of the umbilical dependence («mature stomach») to the child’s biologic autonomy (poetry of Bernadette Dao), of servitude to the liberty, of State of exception in State of right (poetry of Babou Paulin Bamouni). In spite of their adherence to different times, a thematic …

Hippocampal Gaba Enables Inhibitory Control Over Unwanted Thoughts, Taylor W. Schmitz, Marta M. Correia, Catarina S. Ferreira, Andrew P. Prescot, Michael C. Anderson

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2017 The Author(s). Intrusive memories, images, and hallucinations are hallmark symptoms of psychiatric disorders. Although often attributed to deficient inhibitory control by the prefrontal cortex, difficulty in controlling intrusive thoughts is also associated with hippocampal hyperactivity, arising from dysfunctional GABAergic interneurons. How hippocampal GABA contributes to stopping unwanted thoughts is unknown. Here we show that GABAergic inhibition of hippocampal retrieval activity forms a key link in a fronto-hippocampal inhibitory control pathway underlying thought suppression. Subjects viewed reminders of unwanted thoughts and tried to suppress retrieval while being scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Suppression reduced hippocampal activity and memory …

Geographical Scale, Industrial Diversity And Regional Economic Stability, Jing Chen Dec 2017

Geographical Scale, Industrial Diversity And Regional Economic Stability, Jing Chen

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The empirical relationship between economic diversity and economic stability varies when it is measured at dfferent geographical scales. This paper evaluates the role of geographical scales in assessing this diversity-stability relationship among counties, states, Economic Areas (EAs), metropolitan counties and metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the contiguous U.S. When choosing geographical units to analyze regional economic structure, it is necessary that the geographical units be large enough in population and employment to quantify effectively the regional economic structure. In addition, this paper proposes that geographical units also should be functionally aggregated regions as they better represent spatial interactions than formal …

The Effect Of Health Care Entrepreneurship On Local Health: The Case Of Medexpress In Appalachia, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Joshua C. Hall Dec 2017

The Effect Of Health Care Entrepreneurship On Local Health: The Case Of Medexpress In Appalachia, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Joshua C. Hall

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

We test the hypothesis that the opening of an Urgent Care Center (UCC) has positive impacts on the local community. There are several mechanisms through which a UCC can have an impact: lower health care costs, emergency room decongestion, and improved access to medical information. We examine the entry of MedExpress into Appalachian counties between 2001 and 2013. Employing data from Health Resources Files, which provides information for all counties for specific years, we use Propensity Score Matching to create a year 2000 control group for the counties “treated” by MedExpress entry beginning in 2001. We then employ a standard …

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The Port’s proposal is to remove the existing wharf and replace it with a “seawalk” focused on community engagement, interaction with nature, visitor moorage, and local history. The seawalk will be an extension from the upcoming Waypoint Park and part of the larger Waterfront District subarea plan developed by the Port and City of Bellingham (2013). After replacing the insecure pilings and outdated wharf material, the new wharf would be available for recreational use, natural history interpretive education, shoreline habitat improvement, and community engagement such as art and First Nations’ collaboration. The estimated dimensions of the current wharf are 16 …

Opalco Community Solar Project, Claire Anderson, Rhea CañAs, Jendayi Edmeade, Elijah Merrell, Alyssa Rehwald

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The Orcas Power and Light Cooperative (OPALCO) reached out to its members about their interest in a community solar project. After deciding that there was enough interest, the utility asked solar installers to submit proposals for a ground-mounted solar array. Community solar provides an opportunity for more people to be involved in generating clean energy. OPALCO members can buy a portion of the whole array, and through virtual net metering, receive credits for the energy generated by their portion. While winters in the Pacific Northwest can be cloudy, energy generated during sunny summer days will be stored in a vanadium …

Cerebrovascular Pathology In Down Syndrome And Alzheimer Disease, Elizabeth Head, Michael J. Phelan, Eric Doran, Ronald C. Kim, Wayne W. Poon, Frederick A. Schmitt, Ira T. Lott Dec 2017

Cerebrovascular Pathology In Down Syndrome And Alzheimer Disease, Elizabeth Head, Michael J. Phelan, Eric Doran, Ronald C. Kim, Wayne W. Poon, Frederick A. Schmitt, Ira T. Lott

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

People with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk for developing Alzheimer disease (AD) with age. Typically, by age 40 years, most people with DS have sufficient neuropathology for an AD diagnosis. Interestingly, atherosclerosis and hypertension are atypical in DS with age, suggesting the lack of these vascular risk factors may be associated with reduced cerebrovascular pathology. However, because the extra copy of APP leads to increased beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ) accumulation in DS, we hypothesized that there would be more extensive and widespread cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) with age in DS relative to sporadic AD. To test this hypothesis CAA, …

Improving Bicycle Crash Prediction For Urban Road Segments, Krista Nordback, Sirisha Kothuri, Wesley Marshall, Geoff Gibson, Nick Ferenchak Dec 2017

Improving Bicycle Crash Prediction For Urban Road Segments, Krista Nordback, Sirisha Kothuri, Wesley Marshall, Geoff Gibson, Nick Ferenchak

TREC Final Reports

The 2010 Highway Safety Manual (HSM) provides methods for predicting the number of motor vehicle crashes on various roadway facilities. However, it includes only a rudimentary method for predicting the number of bicycle-related crashes. Despite research demonstrating that bicycle volume is an important factor in estimating number of bicycle crashes, the method does not include the volume of bicyclists using the roadway. To remedy this, this project will investigate the potential of various simplified methods to include bicycle volumes in future versions of the HSM. By studying locations where bicycle traffic volumes, motor vehicle traffic volumes, bicycle collisions, and roadway …

Socializing With The Out-Group: Testing The Contact Hypothesis Among School Students In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Matthew Thomas Becker Dec 2017

Socializing With The Out-Group: Testing The Contact Hypothesis Among School Students In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Matthew Thomas Becker

Faculty and Student Publications

The purpose of this article is to test the contact hypothesis among self-identifying Bosniak, Croat, Serb, and Bosnian high school seniors in Bosnia and Herzegovina, using the Other-Group Orientation Scale (Roberts et al., 1999). This article finds that attending a ‘non-appropriate’ ethnic school statistically increases tolerance of out-group members, which conforms to the predictions of the contact hypothesis, originally put forth by Allport (1958). This field research also found that secondary schools are largely homogenous in the country, thus preventing high levels of cross-ethnic contact in schools, which was expected. This article represents the first post-war, countrywide quantitative testing of …

Understanding Parents’ Attitudes Towards Complexity In Children's Books, Dorit Aram, Deborah Bergman Deitcher, Gali Adar Dec 2017

Understanding Parents’ Attitudes Towards Complexity In Children's Books, Dorit Aram, Deborah Bergman Deitcher, Gali Adar

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Experts in children's literature and child development value complexity in the language, socio-emotional content, and structure of books, yet little is known regarding parents’ attitudes towards these aspects. The study thus examined how parents’ gender, education, and profession, children's age and gender, and frequency of parent-child reading interactions predict parents’ support for complexity in children’s books. Participants were 104 parents to children aged 4-7. Parents completed questionnaires measuring frequency of shared book reading and levels of support for complexity of children’s narrative books in three areas: language, socio-emotional content, and structure. Results showed that parents supported complexity of socio-emotional content, …

The Influence Of Hierarchy Steepness On Cooperation: A Comparison Between Captive Japanese Macaques And Black-Handed Spider Monkeys, Sean Ryan Draxler Dec 2017

The Influence Of Hierarchy Steepness On Cooperation: A Comparison Between Captive Japanese Macaques And Black-Handed Spider Monkeys, Sean Ryan Draxler

Theses and Dissertations

Non-human primates often live in social groups that form hierarchies, which can be either egalitarian or despotic. Despotic non-human primate groups are characterized by the ability of dominant members to frequently win dyadic conflicts against subordinates, and egalitarian primate groups are characterized by an unclear ranking of dominance. Non-human primates will often cooperate with each other within their social groups. Cooperation can be defined as the sharing of food, grooming, and formation of alliances. In a comparative study between bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), it was suggested that hierarchy steepness is a good predictor of sharing between unrelated …

A Matter Of Suspension: An Experimental Approach To Hammerstone Hafting In Prehistoric Keweenaw Copper Mining, Katherine Trotter Dec 2017

A Matter Of Suspension: An Experimental Approach To Hammerstone Hafting In Prehistoric Keweenaw Copper Mining, Katherine Trotter

Theses and Dissertations

For thousands of years before European contact, the vast deposits of copper in the Lake Superior Basin were exploited by the indigenous population of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and surrounding areas. The copper used and traded by the Native Americans in and around the Lake Superior Basin came from mines on Isle Royale and in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. In the process of mining, a number of tools were utilized, including both grooved and ungrooved hammerstones. Grooved hammerstones are most commonly found in the Keweenaw while ungrooved stones are most commonly found on Isle Royale. Caches of these …

Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Daily Discrimination Experiences And Nicotine, Alcohol, And Drug Use Among Sexual And Gender Minority Individuals, Nicholas A. Livingston, Annesa Flentje, Nicholas C. Heck, Allen Szalda-Petree, Bryan N. Cochran Dec 2017

Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Daily Discrimination Experiences And Nicotine, Alcohol, And Drug Use Among Sexual And Gender Minority Individuals, Nicholas A. Livingston, Annesa Flentje, Nicholas C. Heck, Allen Szalda-Petree, Bryan N. Cochran

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience elevated rates of minority stress, which has been linked to higher rates of nicotine and substance use. Research on this disparity to date is largely predicated on methodology that is insensitive to within day SGM-based discrimination experiences, or their relation to momentary nicotine and substance use risk. We address this knowledge gap in the current study using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Method: Fifty SGM individuals, between 18 and 45 years of age, were recruited from an inland northwestern university, regardless of their nicotine or substance use history, and invited to participate in …

Revenue Sharing And Player Salaries In Major League Baseball, James Richard Hill, Nicholas A. Jolly Dec 2017

Revenue Sharing And Player Salaries In Major League Baseball, James Richard Hill, Nicholas A. Jolly

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article analyzes how changes made to the revenue sharing agreement in the 2007 Major League Baseball collective bargaining agreement influenced the salaries of position players and pitchers. The tax rates associated with revenue sharing decreased following ratification of the 2007 agreement. Theoretically, these changes should increase players’ marginal revenue product and, therefore, salaries. Results indicate that position players experienced an increase in salary following the 2007 agreement. Pitchers’ salaries also increased, but by a smaller amount. The effect of the 2007 agreement was different throughout the salary distribution for position players, but uniform throughout the distribution for pitchers.

Continuous Workout Mortgages: Efficient Pricing And Systemic Implications, Robert J. Shiller, Rafal M. Wojakowski, M. Shahid Ebrahim, Mark B. Shackleton Dec 2017

Continuous Workout Mortgages: Efficient Pricing And Systemic Implications, Robert J. Shiller, Rafal M. Wojakowski, M. Shahid Ebrahim, Mark B. Shackleton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the Continuous Workout Mortgage (CWM), a two in one product: a fixed rate home loan coupled with negative equity insurance, to advocate its viability in mitigating financial fragility. In order to tackle the many issues that CWMs embrace, we perform a range of tasks. We optimally price CWMs and take a systemic market-based approach, stipulating that mortgage values and payments should be linked to housing prices and adjusted downward to prevent negative equity. We illustrate that amortizing CWMs can be the efficient home financing choice for many households. We price CWMs as American option style, defaulting debt …

Finite-Sample Optimal Estimation And Inference On Average Treatment Effects Under Unconfoundedness, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár Dec 2017

Finite-Sample Optimal Estimation And Inference On Average Treatment Effects Under Unconfoundedness, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider estimation and inference on average treatment effects under unconfoundedness conditional on the realizations of the treatment variable and covariates. Given nonparametric smoothness and/or shape restrictions on the conditional mean of the outcome variable, we derive estimators and confidence intervals (CIs) that are optimal infinite samples when the regression errors are normal with known variance. In contrast to conventional CIs, our CIs use a larger critical value that explicitly takes into account the potential bias of the estimator. When the error distribution is unknown, feasible versions of our CIs are valid asymptotically, even when √n-inference is not possible due …

Random Coefficient Continuous Systems: Testing For Extreme Sample Path Behaviour, Yubo Tao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Jun Yu Dec 2017

Random Coefficient Continuous Systems: Testing For Extreme Sample Path Behaviour, Yubo Tao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Jun Yu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies a continuous time dynamic system with a random persistence parameter. The exact discrete time representation is obtained and related to several discrete time random coefficient models currently in the literature. The model distinguishes various forms of unstable and explosive behaviour according to specific regions of the parameter space that open up the potential for testing these forms of extreme behaviour. A two-stage approach that employs realized volatility is proposed for the continuous system estimation, asymptotic theory is developed, and test statistics to identify the different forms of extreme sample path behaviour are proposed. Simulations show that the …
