A Continuum Of Care: School Librarian Interventions For New Teacher Resilience, Rita Reinsel Soulen
A Continuum Of Care: School Librarian Interventions For New Teacher Resilience, Rita Reinsel Soulen
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
School librarians occupy a unique position to offer supports for first year teachers to build resilience, reduce burnout, and ensure retention. The researcher used the psychology theory of resilience to develop the Continuum of Care model which initiates in mentoring and moves toward a collaborative partnership. Fifteen school librarians in one urban district recruited 26 new teachers in their schools to form the treatment group. All new teachers in the district were surveyed to establish their initial level of resilience and collect demographics. A comparison group of 26 new teachers were matched by scores on a resilience scale at the …

Risk Of Unintended Pregnancy In Latina Young Adults: The Effect Of Gender Role Beliefs, Acculturation, And Depression, Jessica Block
Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Acculturation and depression were also examined as moderators of the association between marianismo and contraceptive method choice, as well as separately for their effects on contraceptive use. Unmarried, nulliparous Latina women aged 18-24 (N = 142) were recruited through online social media platforms. Data were collected in the United States in July 2017. Logistic regression analyses were performed to distinguish between women who utilized more effective v. less effective contraceptive methods in the …

Animals As Living Accommodations, Ani B. Satz
Animals As Living Accommodations, Ani B. Satz
Faculty Articles
Animals as “living accommodations” is a concept I first developed and used in 2006, in my disability and animal law courses, to describe nonhuman animals who either provide service or emotional support to humans with functional impairments. My goal in using this language is to emphasize the important differences between employing living animals and inanimate tools of assistance to promote meaningful access to work, public services, places of public accommodation, and public transportation. The differences may be viewed from the perspectives of a variety of stakeholders, including: individuals with disabilities and other impairments; businesses accommodating such individuals; members of the …

Discovery Of Natural Product Analogs Against Ethanol-Induced Cytotoxicity In Hippocampal Slice Cultures, Meredith A. Saunders-Mattingly
Discovery Of Natural Product Analogs Against Ethanol-Induced Cytotoxicity In Hippocampal Slice Cultures, Meredith A. Saunders-Mattingly
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
An estimated 13.9% of Americans currently meet criteria for an alcohol (ethanol; EtOH) use disorder (AUD). While there are 4 medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat AUD, these treatments have demonstrated poor clinical efficacy. Our ongoing research program encompasses a multi-tiered screening of a natural product library and validation process to provide novel information about the mechanisms underlying EtOH-induced changes in neurobiology and to identify novel chemical scaffolds to be exploited in the development of pharmacological treatments for AUD in a rodent organotypic hippocampal slice culture model. Initial screens of several natural product compounds identified …
A Place Among The Stars? The Influence Of Religion And Creationism On Attitudes Towards Space Exploration And Beliefs In Extraterrestrial Life, Sarah R. Schiavone
A Place Among The Stars? The Influence Of Religion And Creationism On Attitudes Towards Space Exploration And Beliefs In Extraterrestrial Life, Sarah R. Schiavone
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Space exploration continues to expand humanity’s understanding of the universe. And, while Americans have widely favorable attitudes towards efforts to explore outer space, certain religious beliefs appear to be associated with more negative attitudes towards space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. The current study explored the role of religion and creationism on attitudes towards space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. Priming techniques were used to test whether increasing the accessibility of religious and creationist concepts led to more negative attitudes towards space exploration and beliefs about extraterrestrial life. Participants (N = 230) encountered an explicit …
Mmpi-2-Rf Underreporting Validity Scales In Firefighter Applicants: A Cross-Validation Study, Kullen Charles Balthrop
Mmpi-2-Rf Underreporting Validity Scales In Firefighter Applicants: A Cross-Validation Study, Kullen Charles Balthrop
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
The identification of potential underreporting in employment evaluations is important to consider when examining a measure’s validity. This importance increases in personnel selection involving high-virtue positions (e.g., police officers and firefighters). The current study aimed to utilize an archival firefighter applicant sample to examine the construct validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form’s (MMPI-2-RF) underreporting scales (L-r and K-r). Results were analyzed using a correlation matrix comprised of a modified version of the Multi-Trait Multi-Method Matrix (MTMM), as well as multiple regression and partial correlation. The present study provides additional support for the construct validity of the MMPI-2-RF’s underreporting …
Globalization, Institutions Of Social Solidarity, And Radical Right-Wing Populism In Western Europe, Duane Swank, Hans-Georg Betz
Globalization, Institutions Of Social Solidarity, And Radical Right-Wing Populism In Western Europe, Duane Swank, Hans-Georg Betz
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
We rejoin the question of whether globalization contributes to the electoral success of the radical populist right in Western Europe. We also advance and test the hypothesis that institutions of social solidarity directly weaken support for the radical right and moderate the electoral impact of globalization. In empirical analysis of national elections in 16 European polities from 1981 to 2015, we find that merchandise imports from developing nations, capital mobility, and, especially, inflows of refugees and asylum seekers are positively associated with the radical right-wing populist party vote. In addition, a universalistic welfare state directly depresses the vote for radical …

Parker (Univ. of Western Ontario, Canada) analyzes the connection between economics and entrepreneurship. Specifically, he shows how academic studies such as economics, policy, and social issues relate to entrepreneurship. The book is organized in four parts: selection (theories, empirical methods, determinants, and evidence), finance (debt, venture capital, angel finance, crowd-funding, wealth, etc.), performance (growth, job creation, innovation, survival, etc.), and public policy (policies, regulation, taxation, etc.). At the end of each, a concluding section provides a summary, a list of opportunities for future research, an extensive reference section, and an index.

Business is the top field of study for international students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Yet, evidence suggests that not all international students who speak English as a second language are adequately equipped with the language skills they need to succeed. At the same time, the number of international students seeking business training in English-medium universities continues to rise. Thus, this study sought to fill an increasingly important gap in the literature by examining the strategies, innovations, challenges, and outcomes for U.S. schools of business who admit large concentrations of international ESL students at the …
