How Anthropogenic Climate Change Exacerbates Vulnerability In Prison Communities; A Critical Environmental Justice Analysis, John L. Veit

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines the link between anthropogenic climate change and mass incarceration by examining how governments address conditions in and around prisons resulting from hurricanes and wildfires. Critical Environmental Justice, Treadmill of Production and Destruction theories are synthesized using what is debuted here as an intersectional camera based on the theory of intersectionality. It examines how Trump administration policies will greatly exacerbate dangers caused by climate change and increase risks and dangers caused by mass incarceration. In addition to being a call to action, this project is intended to serve as a resource for prisoner rights activists. Prisons have become …

The Role Of Social Capital In Fishing Community Sustainability: Case Of Shelter Cove, Ca, Laura R. Casali

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Community development scholars have consistently highlighted the importance of social capital – the glue that keeps a community together – for the development and long-term sustainability of rural communities. There has been less discussion about the role of social capital in fishing communities. This thesis explores the historical trajectory of social capital in Shelter Cove, CA, a small, remote fishing community with an attempt to understand how the type and level of social capital have and may continue to affect the progress and sustainability of the community.

Data for this thesis were collected as part of a strategic planning effort …

The Historical Evaluation And Significance Of The Old Joerger Ranch, Martis Valley, California, Hope Caroline Schear

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

United States history is full of adventure and pioneering but building the regional histories of the nation allows one to dig deeper into what it took to make this country develop socially and economically. In the mid 1800’s California experienced a boom like never before. In 1848, mill workers found gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, which led to a huge influx of people and population spike that changed California forever. Once the Gold Rush subsided, agriculture replaced gold in California as a wealth generator. Early settlers discovered that the mild climate of the region allows a wide variety …

Differential Predictors Of Opposition To Same-Sex Marriage And Sexual Prejudice, Latishia E Y Jett-Dias

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study investigated attitudes toward same-sex marriage and its beneficiaries from the frameworks of social dominance orientation (SDO) and political conservatism. Unlike past research that focused mainly on sexual prejudice, the current paper explicitly examined both opposition to same-sex marriage and sexual prejudice. Additionally, the current study explored subcomponents of SDO (i.e., opposition to equality [OEQ] and group-based dominance [GBD]). Study One examined relationships and predictive difference between attitudes toward same-sex marriage and its beneficiaries before California legalized same-sex marriage. Study Two addressed attitudes before and recently after California legalized same-sex marriage. OEQ, GBD, and conservatism predicted opposition to same-sex …

Preferences For Local And Organic Food: A Comparison Of New Hampshire And Vermont, Victoria Smith Lorvig Jan 2018

Preferences For Local And Organic Food: A Comparison Of New Hampshire And Vermont, Victoria Smith Lorvig

Honors Theses and Capstones

Annies bunnies or Kraft elbows? Supermarket or farmers market? Organic and local foods have been on the rise in the global market since the new millennium began (Darnhofer, 2010: 68, Schupp, 2016: 319). The growth in organic is attributed to consumers wanting their food to be healthier and more environmentally friendly (Aschemann-Witzel et. Al, 2017: 211, Van Doorn et. A, 2011: 167). The appeals of local foods are similar, plus the added component of boosting the local economy and building community (Hempel & Hamm, 2016: 732). Income is not the only factor affecting preferences and willingness to pay (WTP). Actors …

The Muslim Question: France’S Reconstruction Of The Clash Of Civilizations Story, Shayna Koczur

Senior Projects Spring 2018

rench Republicanism used Muslim immigrant groups in order to re create a “clash of civilizations” novel in France as a way to preserve Republican Values. In order to argue this, I will explain how Republicanism functions, how it was challenged, and how it was mutated against Islamic Post Colonial immigrants in order to justify its worth when France was faced with a change in demographics and modernization. This paper will aim to answer why non secular Muslims in France seem non- integratable and will pull on France’s Republican past, immigration model, and history with Islam in order to answer this …

Don’T Wait For Them To Come To You: Partnering With Student Support Services, Katie Bishop Jan 2018

Don’T Wait For Them To Come To You: Partnering With Student Support Services, Katie Bishop

Criss Library Faculty Publications

AT ANY INSTITUTION a positive culture is a critical element in overall organizational effectiveness. In my four years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries I have seen the transition of a dean, an associate dean, two directors, and multiple faculty and staff. Notwithstanding this turnover, the library staff members have successfully come together to create a new student- centered, inclusive, and engaged library culture. Many factors went into this change, and the leadership turnover actually served to strengthen our library organizational model into one that is more open and communicative. However, the culture changes in my unit, …

Perceived Fitness And Exercise Intensity Can Predict Exercise Enjoyment, Thomas G. Plante, Marily Oppezzo, Brendan Tran, L. Aislinn Diaz

Psychology

The goal of the study was to investigate the potential interplay of environmental, physiological, and psychological factors with exercise enjoyment. Eighty female undergraduate students at a private, West Coast university participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: control (C), in which the participant exercised alone; talking (T), in which the participant exercised with two confederates who provided “small talk” conversation; and no talking (NT), in which the participant was told she/he had been randomly selected not to wear headphones while the two confederates would wear them. Although experimental group assignment was unrelated to …

Comparing L1 And L2 Texts And Writers In First-Year Composition, Grant Eckstein, Dana Ferris

Faculty Publications

Scholars have at various points discussed the needs of second language (L2) writers enrolled in “mainstream” composition courses where they are mixed with native (L1) English speakers. Other researchers have investigated the experiences of L2 writers in mainstream classes and the perceptions of their instructors about their abilities and needs. Little research, however, has directly compared L1 and L2 students (mostly Generation 1.5) taking composition classes together. For this article, the researchers collected writing samples from 56 L1 and 74 L2 students enrolled in a university (mainstream) first-year composition course. Using a mixed-methods design, they analyzed the texts for language …

Two Nebraskas, Our Changing Landscape, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Over the past several decades in Nebraska, where and how people live has changed dramatically. In 1900, 67% of Nebraskans lived in nonmetropolitan counties. Today, 65% live in metropolitan counties. The transformation in where people live in Nebraska reveals changes in how people live as well. For instance, in this infographic you can see that metropolitan Nebraska is younger, more diverse and more educated. However, while there are differences between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan Nebraska there are some attributes of life in Nebraska that transcend county boarders. For instance, the high rate of labor force participation and the overwhelming majority of …
