The limited availability of Egyptian Arabic (EA) corpus resources, especially speech corpora, has left open opportunity for research into such dialect phenomena as register. In this paper we introduce a new two-millionword EA corpus, CALM. We perform a register analysis on EA between two subcorpora of CALM (i.e. Movies and Blogs), showing several features that vary between the two. A discussion follows about how annotation was carried out automatically, how it was handcorrected, and what the prospects are for carrying out similar studies using CALM.

Non-Linear Tyre Model-Based Non-Singular Terminal Sliding Mode Observer For Vehicle Velocity And Side-Slip Angle Estimation, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li, Bangji Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Vehicle velocity and side-slip angle are important vehicle states for the electronic stability programme and traction control system in vehicle safety control system and for the control allocation method of electric vehicles with in-wheel motors. This paper proposes an innovative side-slip angle estimator based on the non-linear Dugoff tyre model and non-singular terminal sliding mode observer. The proposed estimation method based on the non-linear tyre model can accurately present the tyre's non-linear characteristics and can show advantages over estimation methods based on the linear tyre model. The utilised Dugoff tyre model has a relatively simple structure with few parameters, and …

This work experimentally demonstrates that the imaging quality of quantum ghost imaging (GI) with entangled photons can be significantly improved by properly handling the errors caused by the imperfection of optical devices. We also consider compressive GI to reduce the number of measurements and thereby the data acquisition time. The image reconstruction is formulated as a sparse total least square problem which is solved with an iterative algorithm. Our experiments show that, compared with existing methods, the new method can achieve a significant performance gain in terms of mean square error and peak signal⁻noise ratio.

The responses of two silicon on insulator (SOI) 3-D microdosimeters developed by the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics were investigated with a range of different low energy ions, with high linear energy transfer (LET). The two microdosimeters n-SOI and p-SOI were able to measure the LET of different ions including 7 Li, 12 C, 16 O, and 48 Ti with ranges below 350 μm in silicon. No plasma effects were seen in the SOI microdosimeters when irradiated with the high LET ions. A Monte Carlo simulation using Geant4 was compared to the experimental measurements, whereby some discrepancies were observed for …

Accurate Magneto-Optical Determination Of Radius Of Topological Nodal-Ring Semimetals, Wenye Duan, Cuihong Yang, Zhongshui Ma, Yiming Zhu, C Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
The shape of the Fermi surface of topological nodal-ring semimetals at low carrier concentrations is characterized by the ring radius b/ℏvF. This peculiar topological property may not have a clear signature in measurable physical quantities. We demonstrate an accurate and definitive method to determine the radius of topological nodal-ring semimetals. Under a magnetic field along the ring axis, the axial magneto-optical response (σzz) has a giant peak. The position of this ultrastrong response is at the frequency of exactly 2b and is independent of the strength of the magnetic field. The amplitude of the peak response is many times stronger …

Numerical Analysis Of Axially Loaded Circular High Strength Concrete-Filled Double Steel Tubular Short Columns, Mizen Ahmed, Qing Quan Liang, Vipulkumar I. Patel, Muhammad N. S Hadi
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Circular high-strength concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) columns are high performance members where the internal and external steel tubes offer significant confinement to the concrete infill. The confinement remarkably improves the concrete compressive strength and ductility. However, no fiber element models have been formulated for computing the responses of CFDST columns with circular steel tubes filled with high-strength concrete incorporating accurate confinement to the core and sandwiched concrete. In this paper, a new fiber-based numerical model is developed that computes the axial load-strain responses of circular high-strength CFDST short columns under axial loading. Based on existing experimental results, a new …

Daily water level forecasting is of significant importance for the comprehensive utilization of water resources. An improved least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model was introduced by including an extra bias error control term in the objective function. The tuning parameters were determined by the cross-validation scheme. Both conventional and improved LSSVM models were applied in the short term forecasting of the water level in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China. Evaluations were made with both models through metrics such as RMSE (Root Mean Squared Error), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percent Error) and index of agreement (d). More accurate …

Zinc-dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) additive in oil has been extensively reported to form a protective tribofilm between the moving components of engine for preventing wear. In this study, surface and interface characterizations were conducted on real piston ring/cylinder liner contacts, the interacting mechanism between oil-additive and solid surfaces under realistic mechanical and thermal conditions was predicted according to the identification of the chemical composition and structure of the tribofilm. The results demonstrate the interesting laminated hierarchy of tribofilm. This tribofilm is composed mainly of dense carbon precipitation at the top region and a thinner polyphosphate intermediate layer in contact with deformed iron …

Ultra-Stretchable Mwcnt-Ecoflex Piezoresistive Sensors For Human Motion Detection Applications, Huy Mai, Rahim Mutlu, Charbel Tawk, Gursel Alici, Vitor Sencadas
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Ultra-stretchable sensors are highly desirable for wearable electronic applications. In this paper, we manufactured self-standing piezoresistive sensors using a simple method based on blending multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a stretchable elastomeric matrix (Ecoflex). The sensors showed a low electrical percolation threshold of 0.3 wt%, with an elastic modulus as soft as the human skin in the forearm and palm dermis. An increase in the cross-linking degree of the matrix from 17.43 ± 0.20 mol/m 3 up to 28.55 ± 2.07 mol/m 3 was observed with the incorporation of MWCNTs, revealing that the conductive filler is covalently bonded to the …

Probing Fretting Performance Of Dlc And Mos2 Films Under Fluid Lubrication, Wenhua Zhuang, Hao Li, Wen Li, Xiaoqiang Fan, Jifan He, Zhenbing Cai, Wang Fu, Guangan Zhang, Shanhong Wan, Minhao Zhu
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Transition from onefold to synergistic lubrication for solving fretting wear and fatigue problems is of great practical significance, because fluids can regulate fretting regime for minimizing wear, solid films can restrain nucleation and formation of crack. Here synergistic lubrication coatings were prepared using diamond-like carbon (DLC) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films as anti-wear/fatigue layer, and high-performance lubricants (including silicone oil, ionic liquids, multialkylated cyclopentanes and perfluoropolyethers (PFPE)) as flowable lubrication layer. Their fretting performance was evaluated in detail and fretting mechanism was revealed by surface/interface analysis techniques. Results determine the synergistic lubrication coatings with good anti-wear and anti-fatigue abilities, deriving …

Theoretical Analysis Of Electrochemical Noise Measurement With Single Substrate Electrode Configuration And Examination Of The Effect Of Reference Electrodes, Thomas Jurak, Sina S. Jamali, Yue Zhao
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
The development of the single substrate technique presents a realistic possibility of utilising electrochemical noise measurement for on-site evaluations of corrosion behaviour. A theoretical model was developed to further understand the effects of reference electrodes on the acquired data to increase confidence in the technique. The model demonstrates that the reference electrodes can have a significant impact on the measurements, resulting in erroneous values if the reference electrodes are not selected carefully. Furthermore, the derived equations elucidate how to limit/remove such influence, facilitating accurate application of the single substrate technique on bare metal and coated substrates both in laboratories and …

A Highly Stiffness-Adjustable Robot Leg For Enhancing Locomotive Performance, Matthew Christie, Shuaishuai Sun, Donghong Ning, Haiping Du, S Zhang, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Of the recent developments in legged robotics, compliance control of legs has potential to make a huge impact in the transition from simple mechanisms to life-like machines. Given the nature of legged locomotion in humans and animals involves such compliance control, this is a step forward in terms of the artificial embodiment of the biological traits that make these living beings superior to the robots we have today. Taking a literal Rolling Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum (R-SLIP) morphology, this work proposes a magnetorheological-fluid-centric (MRF) variable stiffness leg, aiming to further investigate this area and take advantage of the improved energy …

A Generalised Bayesian Inference Method For Maritime Surveillance Using Historical Data, Jia Li, Xiumin Chu, Wei He, Feng Ma, Reza Malekian, Zhixiong Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In practice, maritime monitoring systems rely on manual work to identify the authenticities, risks, behaviours and importance of moving objects, which cannot be obtained directly through sensors, especially from marine radar. This paper proposes a generalised Bayesian inference-based artificial intelligence that is capable of identifying these patterns of moving objects based on their dynamic attributes and historical data. First of all, based on dependable prior data, likelihood information about objects of interest is obtained in terms of dynamic attributes, such as speed, direction and position. Observations on these attributes of a new object can be obtained as pieces of evidence …

Dean-Flow-Coupled Elasto-Inertial Particle And Cell Focusing In Symmetric Serpentine Microchannels, Dan Yuan, Ronald Sluyter, Qianbin Zhao, Shiyang Tang, Sheng Yan, Guolin Yun, Ming Li, Jun Zhang, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
This work investigates particle focusing under Dean-flow-coupled elasto-inertial effects in symmetric serpentine microchannels. A small amount of polymers were added to the sample solution to tune the fluid elasticity, and allow particles to migrate laterally and reach their equilibriums at the centerline of a symmetric serpentine channel under the synthesis effect of elastic, inertial and Dean-flow forces. First, the effects of the flow rates on particle focusing in viscoelastic fluid in serpentine channels were investigated. Then, comparisons with particle focusing in the Newtonian fluid in the serpentine channel and in the viscoelastic fluid in the straight channel were conducted. The …

Impinging planar jets are a widely used means of removing excess drag-out coating material from steel strip in order to control the final thickness of the applied coating. A wide range of possible coating defects are known to occur for this process, many of which are suspected to have their origin in the spatio-temporal characteristics of the air jets. It is therefore of interest to improve understanding of the link between the unsteady flow behaviour inherent to impinging jets and the evolution of the coating free surface produced by the gas-wiping process. In this paper, the coating response, characterised by …

Integrated Trajectory Planning And Control For Obstacle Avoidance Manoeuvre Using Non-Linear Vehicle Mp Algorithm, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li, Bangji Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In the current literature, model-predictive (MP) algorithm is widely applied in autonomous vehicle trajectory planning and control but most of the current studies only apply the linear tyre model, which cannot accurately present the tyre non-linear characteristic. Furthermore, most of these studies separately consider the trajectory planning and trajectory control of the autonomous vehicle and few of them have integrated the trajectory planning and trajectory control together. To fill in above research gaps, this study proposes the integrated trajectory planning and trajectory control method using a non-linear vehicle MP algorithm. To fully utilise the advantages of four-wheel-independent-steering and four-wheel-independent-driving vehicle, …

Modeling For Optical Feedback Laser Diode Operating In Period-One Oscillation And Its Application, Bin Liu, Yuxi Ruan, Yanguang Yu, Qinghua Guo, Jiangtao Xi, Jun Tong
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
An optical feedback laser diode (OFLD) operating in period-one oscillation (POO) with a moving external target is investigated by exploring its potential sensing capability. First, the modeling of an OFLD-POO sensing system is presented. An analytical expression is derived for OFLD-POO sensing signal, from which a new displacement measurement method is developed. The proposed sensing model is verified by the well-known Lang-Kobayashi equations used to describe the dynamic behavior of a laser with optical feedback. Then, an experimental OFLD-POO system is built in order to demonstrate an application example for displacement sensing. The measurement results show that the OFLD-POO sensing …

The test methods include the splitting test (ST), double punch test (DPT) and direct tensile test (DTT). The compressive strength of the concrete used in this study ranged between 30 and 80 MPa with 0%, 1·5% and 3% steel fibre by volume of the concrete. In total, 81 concrete cylinders were cast and tested for 28-d compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and double punch tensile strength of the concrete. In addition, 27 concrete prism specimens were cast and tested …

In this paper, we apply the Monte Carlo neural network (MCNN), a type of neural network optimized by Monte Carlo algorithm, to electricity load forecast. Meanwhile, deep MCNNs with one, two and three hidden layers are designed. Results have demonstrated that three-layer MCNN improves 70.35% accuracy for 7-week electricity load forecast, compared with traditional neural network. And five-layer MCNN improves 17.24% accuracy for 7-week forecast. This proves that MCNN has great potential in electricity load forecast.
