A Snapshot Look At Replication And Statistical Reporting Practices In Psychology Journals, Abdulrazaq Imam, Melissa Frate Jan 2019

A Snapshot Look At Replication And Statistical Reporting Practices In Psychology Journals, Abdulrazaq Imam, Melissa Frate

2019 Faculty Bibliography

Current efforts started in 2012 by the Association for Psychological Science (APS) appear to be different from previous arguments against null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST), which remained largely rhetorical without specific actions for compliance by researchers in psychology. The APS advocacy involves specific promising implementation tactics. The present study examined the impact of those efforts on replication and statistical reporting practices in four psychology journals from 2011 and 2015. The results showed that amidst increased reporting of NHST statistics in 2015 compared to 2011 and an absence of power reporting in the behavioral journals, there was increased reporting of actual …

Creating Interdisciplinary Faculty Connections Through Community As A Precursor To Enhancing Innovation, Creativity And Entrepreneurship On University Campuses, Kimble Byrd, Jacqueline Schmidt Jan 2019

Creating Interdisciplinary Faculty Connections Through Community As A Precursor To Enhancing Innovation, Creativity And Entrepreneurship On University Campuses, Kimble Byrd, Jacqueline Schmidt

2019 Faculty Bibliography

The growth of cross-disciplinary diffusion of innovation, creativity and the entrepreneurial mindset has been significant. While many institutions have focused on curriculum and courses, this study examines the use of faculty communities through communities of practice and faculty learning communities to build a campus culture independent of size of the institution, or stage of program development. The analysis examines two distinctly dissimilar academic settings. One Rowan University, a large (16,000 student) public university with a developed program and a second, John Carroll University, a smaller (3,100) private religiously affiliated university with a newly developing program. Authors share suggestions for implementation.

Communication Behaviors Between Close Friends And Romantic Partners In The U.S. And Russia, Deborrah Uecker, Jacqueline Schmidt

2019 Faculty Bibliography

This study examined U.S. and Russian willingness to engage in communication behaviors for close friends and romantic partners. Students completed surveys and interviews on communication behaviors in the areas of disclosure, companionship, emotional support, conflict, and instrumental support. Interviews supported survey results for important qualities/behaviors for friends and romantic partners. U.S. and Russians students had more similarities than differences in communication behaviors for close friends and romantic partners. U.S. students perceived smaller differences between friends and romantic partners, but U.S. and Russians were more willing to engage in communication behaviors for romantic partners than close friends.

Game Theory In Cricket, Shabab Ahmed Jan 2019

Game Theory In Cricket, Shabab Ahmed

Honors Theses

The paper uses the natural setting of cricket to test theoretical predictions in game theory. In this setting, the agents play a one-shot-two-person constant sum game. The paper assesses whether trained professionals in cricket follow the `mix' of strategies predicted by Nash equilibria. The test uses a unique dataset derived from commentary data comprising of bowler and batsman strategies and outcomes. The paper creates a model for bowler-bastman interactions in cricket and uses this in conjunction with the data to generate predicted Nash equilibrium frequencies. These predicted frequencies are then compared with the actual frequencies from the data. My study …

Comparing The Management Of Adhd In The United States And Vietnam: A Cross-Cultural Exploration, Nguyen Nhat Thu Le Jan 2019

Comparing The Management Of Adhd In The United States And Vietnam: A Cross-Cultural Exploration, Nguyen Nhat Thu Le

Honors Theses

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Since ADHD was formally recognized by psychiatrists in the US in 1968, knowledge about this condition has spread to many countries, including Vietnam. The US and Vietnam differ significantly in their perception and management of this disorder. ADHD is an “academic disorder” in the US because the intensifying pressure on children to succeed academically is a key factor in the emergence of ADHD, as well as its high diagnosis rates in some states. In contrast, Vietnamese people consider ADHD a developmental disorder of early childhood, apparently …

The Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Pipeline: Attitudes, Symbolism, And Geography, Catherine W. Fraser Jan 2019

The Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Pipeline: Attitudes, Symbolism, And Geography, Catherine W. Fraser

Honors Theses

Oil pipelines, such as the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, are increasingly controversial and contested in the United States. Since its proposal in 2015, the Enbridge Line 3 Replacement (L3R) pipeline in Minnesota has also generated considerable debate. People who support and oppose oil pipeline projects are influenced by their ideologies, core values, partisan learnings, age, identity, and place attachment, as well as their proximity to new energy projects. However, the ability of any one variable, like spatial proximity or age, to predict attitudes towards new energy projects is debated. I conducted a literature review on attitudes towards energy …

Pickles And Pastrami: The Core Of The American Jew, Theo Satloff Jan 2019

Pickles And Pastrami: The Core Of The American Jew, Theo Satloff

Honors Theses

This thesis argues the there is a strong, interdependent relationship between the creation of the American Jewish deli and the growth and progress of the food technology, food safety, and society within American life. The importance of recognizing the Jewish deli as a key element in tracing the history of American life post-1800s has been underemphasized throughout the deli’s entire existence. Jewish delis represented the intersection of centuries-old technologies and modern innovations, the meeting of centuries-old cultures and new communities, and formed the basis for a force that would have an outsized impact on American politics thereafter.

Here’S Looking At You: Public- Versus Elite-Driven Models Of Presidential Primary Elections, Colin D. Swearingen, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Kate Finneran* Jan 2019

Here’S Looking At You: Public- Versus Elite-Driven Models Of Presidential Primary Elections, Colin D. Swearingen, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Kate Finneran*

2019 Faculty Bibliography

Objective. This study advances the presidential primary literature in two ways. First, since many studies in this literature advocate for more detailed theoretical development, we incorporate an interdisciplinary approach by utilizing social contagion theory from the field of sociology. Second, presidential primaries do not adequately explore what role the public plays during the invisible primary. We thus incorporate Google Trends data into presidential primary models to account for the relative amount of public attention for each presidential primary candidate. Methods. We use fixed effects regression to determine the impact of public attention on a candidate’s share of the contested primary …

Historical Roundtable: ‘Stories We Tell’ In Broadcast News, Michael Murray, Mary E. Beadle, Jessica Ghilani, Reed Smith

2019 Faculty Bibliography

The study and teaching of the history of broadcast news is a relatively recent enterprise — particularly with respect to the attention given to television news — which often parallels the lives of the academics who study and teach the subject. As a result, some of the research focused on broadcast news has been based upon the observations of individuals and events observed firsthand on occasion by those doing the reporting and the research. This close proximity to history has offered unique opportunities to stimulate interest, offer additional clarity or alternatively debunk some of the historic narratives from the field, …

Who Posted That Story? Processing Layered Sources In Facebook News Posts, Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch, Christina Devoss Jan 2019

Who Posted That Story? Processing Layered Sources In Facebook News Posts, Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch, Christina Devoss

2019 Faculty Bibliography

With social media platforms becoming primary news sources, concerns about credibility judgments and knowledge grow. This study (N = 233) experimentally tests the effects of multiple source cues on Facebook news posts on credibility and knowledge. Judgments of story credibility were directly influenced by media source cues, but not friend source cues. Involvement in the source topic moderated the effects of these source cues, such that particular combinations influenced credibility differently, and also influenced cognitive elaboration about the topic. Theoretical implications for cognitive mediation model of learning from the news and the heuristic-systematic model of information processing are presented.

Creating An Outreach Story: Assessment Results, Strategic Planning, And Reflection, Amy Wainwright, Rosan Mitola

2019 Faculty Bibliography

Academic library outreach and student engagement initiatives often strive to connect students to learning spaces, resources, and experts. Librarians do this work to raise awareness of services and to remove barriers so students feel more comfortable seeking help. Additionally, these activities promote the academic library as a hub of engagement, innovation, and continual learning to various user groups. Unfortunately, because these learning experiences can often be unique or serendipitous, measuring how these efforts are contributing to the library’s teaching, learning, and research missions can be difficult. This paper focuses on how academic librarians can align their outreach to strategic goals …

Pogil Beyond Stem, Sue Joyner Guillaud, Margie Ruppel Jan 2019

Pogil Beyond Stem, Sue Joyner Guillaud, Margie Ruppel

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter focuses on POGIL's extension and application in non-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, building on the foundations of POGIL previously discussed in this book. The theory, process, guided inquiry, and evidence of student success are applicable to non-STEM disciplines; however, each discipline may require a few adjustments in content and delivery. Many non-STEM disciplines rely heavily on process skills, which are paramount to the POGIL process. Details on applications to the fields of second language (L2) learning and information literacy serve as case studies, with evidence of learning enhancement and similar foundational learning theories.

“More Than Just A Box”: The Co-Creation Of Social Identity Within Hispanic-Caucasian Multiethnic Family Systems, Anna-Carrie H. Beck

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Approximately 15% of all new marriages in the United States in 2010 were between spouses that shared different racial or ethnic backgrounds from one another. Socha and Diggs (1999) began to examine race as both an outcome of family communication as well as a factor that influences children's communication development in families because of the social pressure multiethnic families endure to fit a nuclear family model. This study utilized dyadic interviews of eleven multiethnic parent couples (N = 22 individuals; 11 dyads) in order to gain a deeper understanding of Hispanic-Caucasian multiethnic family systems. Communication in families plays a foundational …

Instructor-Student Rapport As A Psychological Need For Students, Nicholas T. Tatum Jan 2019

Instructor-Student Rapport As A Psychological Need For Students, Nicholas T. Tatum

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

There is a need to explore ways to better motivate students in instruction, as student motivation is an issue confronting teachers at all levels of education. Instructor-student rapport (ISR), a multidimensional concept comprised of students’ enjoyable interaction and personal connection with instructors, has potential to offer educators a tool for increasing these important student outcomes. Further, self-determination theory (SDT) may have utility for illustrating the psychological mechanisms through which instructors influence students by building rapport.

First, this study explored what behaviors instructors should employ to build ISR with students. Specifically, prosocial humor (related and unrelated) and confirmation (responding to questions, …
