A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh
A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh
Dissertations
The purpose of this research paper is to explore the lived experience of five ex-offenders who have not offended for a minimum period of ten years. How, and why, these individuals have maintained their crime free status shall be explored in detail in an attempt to understand the causal process that permits successful long term desistance from crime. Furthermore the desisting ex-offenders in this study are also ex-drug addicts. Exactly how criminal offending and drug addiction interacted in the past lives of the people is documented, as is the impossibility of abstaining from one of these behaviours only. This necessitates …
How Do Social Care Managers In Disability Services Experience Regulation And Inspection?, Deirdre Connolly
How Do Social Care Managers In Disability Services Experience Regulation And Inspection?, Deirdre Connolly
Dissertations
Regulation is one of the ways in which the State seeks to ensure that health and social care services are safe for those that are using them. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) is the regulatory body in Ireland charged by the State to assure the public that these services are safe. This study set out to understand how social care managers, in the role of person in charge (PIC) of residential services for adults with disabilities, experience HIQA’s regulatory process and to explore how these experiences impact on social care managers, and on service improvement more generally.

The Most Beautiful Of All: A Quantitative Approach To Fairy-Tale Femininity, Jeana Jorgensen
The Most Beautiful Of All: A Quantitative Approach To Fairy-Tale Femininity, Jeana Jorgensen
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Feminist folklorists have long asserted that women’s bodies are represented in fairy tales differently than men’s bodies, in normative and sexist ways. By using computational approaches to analyze a corpus of canonical fairy tales, I assess these claims and establish that women’s bodies are depicted in distinctive ways in fairy tales. This finding is important for scholars interested in fairy-tale studies, gender studies, and computational approaches to folklore studies.

The Effects Of Prototypicality And Gender Salience On Liking And Friendship Potential Of A Female Interlocutor, Rong Ma, Anita Atwell Seate Atwell Seate, Nick Joyce
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Drawing on self-categorization theory, this article examines the indirect effects of gender salience and prototypicality on friendship potential through increasing liking of a female interlocutor. We manipulated biographies of the fictitious interlocutor to change perceptions of prototypicality. For women, gender salience interacted with prototypicality to directly predict liking and the desire to become friends with the interlocutor indirectly through liking. Specifically, there was an interaction between prototypicality and gender salience, such that as gender salience increased, the prototypical interlocutor was liked significantly more and had higher friendship potential. For men, the same relationships did not appear. We discuss the implications …
Social Status And The Effects Of Legal Concealed Firearms On College Campuses, Shane Soboroff, William Lovekamp, Robert Jenkot
Social Status And The Effects Of Legal Concealed Firearms On College Campuses, Shane Soboroff, William Lovekamp, Robert Jenkot
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Research consistently shows that students and faculty are generally against expanding access to firearms on campus, and many stakeholders worry about the effects of campus carry laws on student violence, civility, and feelings of safety. We contribute to this literature by investigating how potential changes to campus carry policies affect students’ reported commitment to campus activities. Theories explaining fear of crime and social commitment led to hypotheses that predict members of socially disadvantaged groups—specifically women and minority students—would report less favorable attitudes toward gun possession on campus, greater feelings of vulnerability to victimization, and less commitment to the college environment …
Debating Student Privacy In Library Research Projects Paper, Jennifer Mayer, Rachel Dineen
Debating Student Privacy In Library Research Projects Paper, Jennifer Mayer, Rachel Dineen
University Libraries Publications
As pressure increases for librarians and administrators to demonstrate the value of academic libraries, there is a parallel concern regarding student data privacy in terms of learning analytics and other data tracking methods used by universities. The intersection where demonstrating the value of academic libraries meets student privacy is a crucial, controversial, and timely debate for our profession. This contributed paper provides an overview of the debate about student privacy and library research projects, a discussion of the evolution of our study, the next steps we will take as a result of our work, and recommendations for others who aspire …
First-Generation Students’ Information Literacy In Everyday Contexts, Darren Ilett
First-Generation Students’ Information Literacy In Everyday Contexts, Darren Ilett
University Libraries Publications
Historically, much of the Library and Information Science (LIS) literature on first-generation students (FGS) framed them using deficit thinking, emphasising what they lacked to be successful in higher education. In contrast, recent scholarship has turned to asset-based pedagogies, shifting the focus onto the strengths that FGS bring to college. Further, LIS research on FGS has examined how students engage with information solely in academic contexts, such as completing research papers or navigating higher education procedures. The current study contributes to the discussion of asset-based pedagogies by using a funds of knowledge approach to explore the ways in which FGS at …
Disordered Eating Habits, Emotion Regulation, And Theory Of Mind In Undergraduate Students, Brianna Borri
Disordered Eating Habits, Emotion Regulation, And Theory Of Mind In Undergraduate Students, Brianna Borri
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to recognize and attribute mental states to oneself and others, has been found to be impaired in a number of different psychological disorders (Bora et al. 2009). Evaluating ToM in a population suffering from eating disorders, however, has proven less consistent; some Anorexia Nervosa patients show ToM deficits compared to healthy controls (Russell et al. 2009) and others perform similarly (Tchanturia et al. 2004). A common consensus not only seems to be lacking within the literature on ToM and Anorexia Nervosa, but within the broader family of eating disorders as well (e.g., Bulimia Nervosa; …
Understanding The Relationship Between Slavery, Self-Esteem, And Income: An Analysis Of The Master-Slave Dynamic And The Socioeconomic Status Of African American Men And Women, Nyree Modisette
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This research project analyzes why a person's status and opportunity for achievement is shrouded in a racialized context. The analysis focuses on the effect of the master-slave dynamic, which was unique as an institution of slavery in the United States because it was conceived along racial lines. Considering that for over 400 years this master-slave dynamic was a primary determinant of the relationships between black and white people, it is not unimaginable to consider that some aspects of that dynamic are still in play today. They have firmly entrenched an unequal economic system that falls along racial lines. For the …

The Use Of Force: Hard Offensive Counterterrorism, Daniel Thomas
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
In the following research, I investigate whether hard offensive counterterrorism results in the failure or success of a counterterrorism strategy. In the second chapter, the academic literature of counterterrorism strategies is examined. Next, a hypothesis is put forth that if a hard offensive counterterrorism strategy is utilized, indicators such as high troop levels, more civilian casualties, more negative public opinion, and an increased rate of terrorism, will point to a failed counterterrorism strategy. Then, I put forth a methodology to test the hypothesis while introducing troop level databases, various public opinion polling sources, and terrorist attack databases to investigate the …

Careless responding (CR) can negatively affect the quality of self-report data and thus the resulting conclusions researchers draw from the data. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether interactive warnings, which alert careless respondents in real time, reduce CR more than traditional, non-interactive warnings. I used a 4 x 4 mixed factorial design to examine these relationships. The between group factor was the type of warning used, which consisted of four levels (i.e., a control, no warning group, a traditional, non-interactive warning, an interactive threatening warning message, and an interactive encouraging message), and the within person factor …

Personality has been extensively researched but the literature has not lived up to its potential for application. Personality variables such as self-control can identify qualified applicants, while minimizing adverse impact. I designed two SJT measure of self-control. The first SJT was hypothesized to predict college grade point average. The second SJT was hypothesized to predict counterproductive work behavior. I administered the first SJT to 676 undergraduates. I administered the second SJT to 608 employed people. Most hypotheses were fully supported. Both SJTs had incremental validity over and above self-report personality measures. The results demonstrate the potential of SJTs to measure …
Creating A Well-Situated Human-Autonomy Team: The Effects Of Team Structure, Elizabeth Marie Frost
Creating A Well-Situated Human-Autonomy Team: The Effects Of Team Structure, Elizabeth Marie Frost
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Intelligent agent technologies are increasing the potential capacity for systems to behave more autonomously and are enabling more advanced human-autonomy teaming. For instance, future applications of human-autonomy teaming for the command and control of unmanned vehicles are now under consideration. This would involve a shift from a supervisory control approach to a teaming structure. These two approaches, instantiated as the task division and relationship between a human operator and a teammate, were empirically examined. The team’s composition, either human-human or human-autonomy, was also considered. A control station that supports single operator management of multiple simulated unmanned vehicles performing a base …

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Climatic Niche Dynamics Of An Invasive Plant Mikania Micrantha Kunth And Its Potential Distribution Under Projected Climate Change, Achyut Kumar Banerjee, Abhishek Mukherjee, Wuxia Guo, Ying Liu, Yelin Huang
Journal Articles
Similarity of climatic niches occupied by a species in its native and invasive ranges has been recognized as one of the key factors for successful invasion. Accounting for changes in climatic niche over time may provide better understanding of the dynamic biological invasion process. We investigated these changes for an invasive alien plant Mikania micrantha in South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Oceania and parts of the USA. Based on documented occurrences over 200 years (1800–2017), we reconstructed the introduction history of the species and estimated climatic niche dynamics for the presumed invasion routes. We estimated niche conservatism and the environmental …
The Association Between Neonatal Death And Facility Birth In Regions Of India, Diane Coffey
The Association Between Neonatal Death And Facility Birth In Regions Of India, Diane Coffey
Journal Articles
BACKGROUND Reducing neonatal mortality in India is critical to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of a global neonatal mortality rate (NNM) of no more than 12 per 1,000. Policy efforts to reduce India's NNM, including a large-scale conditional cash transfer program, have focused on promoting birth in health facilities, rather than at home. Between 2005 and 2015, the percentage of facility births doubled, from 40% to 80%. OBJECTIVE We assess evidence for the hypothesis that facility births reduce NNM by using new data from the National Family Health Survey, 2015-2016. METHODS We analyze the association between neonatal death and …

Using An Ala Carnegie-Whitney Grant To Support Women In Stem: A Bibliography Project, Heidi Blackburn
Using An Ala Carnegie-Whitney Grant To Support Women In Stem: A Bibliography Project, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In the last decade, the spotlight on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has resulted in hundreds of studies on various themes. Categorizing the literature on the status of women in STEM is challenging: the word “STEM” can be ambiguous and the topic is intersectional. A comprehensive bibliography could guide users to the relevant research. By understanding the intersectionality of issues facing women in STEM in higher education, librarians can help their organizations engage in local, regional, and national recruitment and retention efforts. Additionally, libraries can develop collections to support students and faculty conducting research in this area.

Industrial area is one of the determinant factors in the development of manufacturing industry in a region. Theoretically, industrial companies located in industrial areas have an impact on increasing productivity, added value, efficiency, and economic income of a region. This research aims to analyze the role of industrial area in overcoming the deindustrialization symptom with Social Accounting Matrix Model. The result of analysis shows that industrial area has an important role in increasing the output of economy and the absorption of bigger workforce so that indirectly will have an impact on acceleration of industrialization process and also to overcome deindustrialization.

La Modernité Tunisienne Dévoilée : Une Étude Autour De La Femme Célibataire, Madison Wagner
La Modernité Tunisienne Dévoilée : Une Étude Autour De La Femme Célibataire, Madison Wagner
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explains recent accounts of discrimination and cutbacks in reproductive health spaces in Tunisia. Complicating dominant analyses, which attribute these events to the post-revolution political atmosphere which has allowed the proliferation of islamic extremism, I interpret these instances as a manifestation of a deeply rooted stigma against sexually active single women. I trace this stigma’s inception to the contradictory way that Habib Bourguiba conceptualized modernity after independence, and the responsibility he assigned to Tunisian women to embody that modernity. This responsibility remains salient today, and is putting Tunisian women in an increasingly untenable and vulnerable position.
After independence, Bourguiba …
Rights To The River: Implementing A Social Cost-Benefit Analysis In The United States Hydropower Relicensing Process, Claire Wendle
Rights To The River: Implementing A Social Cost-Benefit Analysis In The United States Hydropower Relicensing Process, Claire Wendle
Scripps Senior Theses
Private hydropower operations across the United States are utilizing a public resource, rivers, for power production benefits. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regulates river use through a relicensing procedure that occurs every thirty or fifty years through a cost-benefit analysis framework to determine the best public use of the river. This thesis explores the structure of the current cost-benefit analysis and the effects of timing, public participation and valuation of ecosystem services in the final relicensing decision, and recommends the use of a social cost-benefit framework to distribute the natural resource benefits rivers provide more equally and give fair weight …
Labor Experiences Of Public High School Counselors: Neoliberalism, Productivity, And Care, Avery Harwood
Labor Experiences Of Public High School Counselors: Neoliberalism, Productivity, And Care, Avery Harwood
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores the day-to-day realities for public high school counselors inside their schools. The national average student-to-counselor ratio in public high schools in the U.S. is 482:1. This is almost double the recommended counselor caseload by the American School Counselor Association, which recommends 250 students per counselor. However, counselors’ inflated caseloads are not the only reason why counselors are overworked. Using a year’s worth of ethnographic research, I analyze the bureaucratic and care labor practices of counselors and the ways in which their labor exploitation reflects years of neoliberal discourse influencing the functioning of public education. This neoliberalization of …
