Exploring Data Management: Identifying Signposts For Graduate Student Researchers, Judith E. Pasek, Jennifer Mayer
Exploring Data Management: Identifying Signposts For Graduate Student Researchers, Judith E. Pasek, Jennifer Mayer
University Libraries Publications
As graduate students embark on research projects, they often are not fully aware of what paths they should take or the obstacles they may encounter. Effectively managing research data is a skillset that needs to be honed along the way. Trail guides, including librarians, can establish instructional signposts for relevant data management concepts. To be effective, guides need to be familiar with the knowledge and skill gaps of the explorers. Surveys were conducted at two medium-sized universities to assess perceived importance and knowledge of 12 research data management competencies, with a goal of informing education planning. Results set the foundation …
Considering Ecojustice And Place-Based Responses To Market-Oriented Schooling, Monica K. Shields
Considering Ecojustice And Place-Based Responses To Market-Oriented Schooling, Monica K. Shields
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The politics of neoliberalism fester within education behind discourses of success, deficit, and normalcy. They intersect with discourses such as anthropocentrism, individualism, racism, ability, and others to organize society in a hierarchal manner and prioritize unfettered competition within an economic framework. The power of these discourses resides in their ability to communicate systemic ideology—masking the systemic oppression inherent to neoliberalism. These discourses can be traced to a mechanized worldview that understands matter, relationships, and knowledge through the metaphor of a machine. This study was designed to investigate how discursive meanings combine to create alternative discourses and to answer the research …
Gis Analysis Of The Mid-Nineteenth Century Emigration Of The Old Lutherans From Prussia, Joel Seewald
Gis Analysis Of The Mid-Nineteenth Century Emigration Of The Old Lutherans From Prussia, Joel Seewald
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The Old Lutherans constituted fewer than 20% of the Germans who emigrated from Prussia between 1835 and 1854. In this study, more than 483 cities and villages of origin of 6,911 Old Lutherans were mapped. These origins were in the central provinces of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Posen, Saxony, and Silesia. More emigrants came from Pomerania overall and during every time period except 1849-54. The areas with the most emigrants were north central Pomerania, northern Brandenburg, southeast Brandenburg, and western Silesia. Emigrant destinations were primarily America and Australia. American destinations included New York, Wisconsin, and Texas, but the state that many went …
Exploring The Relationship Between Anxiety Sensitivity And Heart Rate Variability, Bethany Gourley
Exploring The Relationship Between Anxiety Sensitivity And Heart Rate Variability, Bethany Gourley
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a multifaceted construct based on individual beliefs that anxiety symptoms and sensations will have harmful consequences. In general, literature demonstrates three underlying dimensions of AS: fear of cognitive dyscontrol (i.e., cognitive concerns), fear of physiological anxiety sensations (i.e., physical concerns), and fear of negative evaluation (i.e., social concerns). Elevated AS and underlying dimensions have been shown to underlie psychopathology, including anxiety and depression broadly, and are predictive of fear responding in the context of behavioral challenge paradigms whereby individuals with elevated AS demonstrate higher fear and sympathetic nervous system activation. To date, few studies have investigated …
Are First Generation Immigrants More Inclined To Participate In Clinical Research?, Aisha Farha
Are First Generation Immigrants More Inclined To Participate In Clinical Research?, Aisha Farha
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The number of immigrants entering the United States has increased dramatically in the past 30 years, but minorities and ethnic groups are underrepresented in research studies. This study examined first- and second-generation Arab American immigrants in Dearborn, Michigan, using a survey from 65 participants to determine the impact of generation on clinical research participation. Fifty-one (78%) of the respondents were first-generation immigrants, and 14 (22%) were second generation. There was no statistical difference between first- and second-generation immigrants in their willingness to participate in clinical research. Further research with a larger and more diverse population is needed to evaluate willingness …

Effect Of Emotional Intelligence, Collaboration Technology, Team Climate, And Intrinsic Motivation On Virtual Team Effectiveness: A Study Of Team Member Perceptions, Brandy Lynn Kramer
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The pervasiveness of technology has caused a paradigm shift from collocated teams working in the office 9–5 to virtual teams working anywhere, anytime. As such, there is a growing body of literature related to virtual teams; however, there is limited research specific to the relationship between virtual team effectiveness and emotional intelligence, collaboration technology, team climate, and intrinsic motivation. This study used a descriptive, correlational research design. The sample consisted of 119 virtual team members from information technology consulting organizations. The data were collected using a survey instrument containing demographic questions followed by five intact scales with proven reliability and …

"I Don't": A Look At Attitudes Towards Delaying Marriage In A Traditional Community, Abbi Halkola
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This sociological research study was designed to explore the attitudes of women in their late twenties and thirties about marriage and how geography (physical and sociological) impacts decisions. This research looks at women in a politically and religiously conservative area in the central Midwest. The research is meant to be exploratory in nature in order to grasp an understanding of how not only educational and career aspirations affect attitudes toward marriage but also at how leisure activities and the sexual revolution play a major role in the desire to delay marriage. Interviews were conducted to expose women’s attitudes, opinions, choices, …
A Critical Ethnographical Exploration Of Disability Under Apartheid Conditions: The Promising Potential Of Palestinian Higher Education Institutions, Yasmin Snounu
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Utilizing a critical ethnographical methodology, this dissertation explores the experiences and practices of professors and administrators towards accommodating disabled students mainly in Palestine, but also taking into consideration the importance of the both political and disability contexts of the United States, primarily in light of critical disability studies, while also drawing from critical discourse analysis in regard to aspects of language, power hierarchies, and identity. Elements of teacher development theories are used in relation to transformational ways of thinking and the role of educators in combating stigma and promoting/adopting inclusive pedagogical practices towards accommodating disabled students in higher education. My …

Competition Between Veridical And Perceived Location For Visuomotor Control, Fatemeh Alhabib
Competition Between Veridical And Perceived Location For Visuomotor Control, Fatemeh Alhabib
Dissertations and Theses
An influential proposal holds that our visual systems use different information for perception and action. Though numerous studies utilized visual illusions, in which veridical and perceptual properties of objects differ, the evidence was inconclusive and no consensus was reached. In response priming, some evidence suggests that only physical attributes of the prime stimuli control motor responses. Across two experiments, we examined the contributions of physical and consciously perceived location to response priming, using a well-known flash-lag illusion, in which a briefly flashed disk and the moving bars appearing at the same location are perceived as displaced. In all experiments, participants …

Foreign Intervention And The Process Of State Failure Case Study On Libya, Islam Mohamed Goher Mohamed
Foreign Intervention And The Process Of State Failure Case Study On Libya, Islam Mohamed Goher Mohamed
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis investigates the relationship between foreign intervention and state failure. I argue that even an ideal international multilateral humanitarian intervention in a weak state will lead to deepening state failure if the intervention was biased and driven by material rather than ethical interests, focusing on achieving military victory of one party of the internal conflict rather than a negotiated settlement between all conflict parties and ignores the responsibility to rebuild in the aftermath of the intervention.
In making this argument, I developed a conceptual framework to analyse the impact of intervention motives, patterns, forms and instruments on strengthening or …
The Effects Of Parenting And Identity On Decision-Making Styles, Natasha Reyes
The Effects Of Parenting And Identity On Decision-Making Styles, Natasha Reyes
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This paper explores the influences of parenting and identity on decision-making style. Although links have been found between certain aspects of (1) parenting and identity, (2) identity and decision-making, and (3) parenting and decision-making, no study prior to this one, has examined all three variables together. In a college sample (N = 136), parental psychological control was found to be associated with ruminative identity exploration and identity distress. In regard to decision-making, Rational Decision-Making style was found to be related to identity exploration and identity commitment, while Spontaneous Decision-Making was associated with parental Psychological Control. A hypothesis that identity would …
Conceptions About Terrorism: How Fearful Are We And How Does That Affect Us?, Rebecca Jackson
Conceptions About Terrorism: How Fearful Are We And How Does That Affect Us?, Rebecca Jackson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Since the crusades, terrorism has been a form of violence used to promote some kind of agenda, whether political, social, religious or ideological (Martin 2018). With many different definitions of what constitutes terrorism, it is somewhat difficult to measure what exact impact terrorism has had globally. Attacks such as those on 9/11 in the United States and the Manchester bombings have been accepted worldwide as examples of acts of international terrorism. International terrorist attacks have lasting effects on both those directly affected as well as the larger community and beyond. Studies have shown that Americans are overly afraid of terrorism …

Balancing Informed Evaluation With Efficiency: Applying Copyright And Licensing Evaluation To Reserves And Interlibrary Loan, Leetta Schmidt
Tampa Library Faculty and Staff Publications
This article examines steps taken at one academic library to address issues encountered when attempting to create a foundation of copyright knowledge to assist staff in reserves and interlibrary loan. It reviews the development of a copyright policy for the library that specifically addressed interlibrary loan and reserves activities. It also addresses how conducting staff instruction, developing process documentation, and having regular training meetings, enhanced each department’s ability to incorporate the new policy into daily workflows. Finally, it points out new issues encountered when attempting to simplify how copyright and licensed materials are handled.

Predictors Of Morbidity And Mortality Among Thoracic Trauma Patients, Jeremy Patrick Mcconnell
Predictors Of Morbidity And Mortality Among Thoracic Trauma Patients, Jeremy Patrick Mcconnell
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Background. There are roughly 300,000 rib fractures treated for in the United States each year. These represent 10-26% of thoracic trauma injuries and have about a 10% mortality rate. There is a common belief that mortality in rib fracture patients can be contributed to the diagnosis of pneumonia, but this study does not support that claim. Purpose. To determine the predictors of morbidity and mortality in rib fracture patients. Methods. Using a level 1 trauma center patient registry, we retrospectively analyzed all patients that were admitted with at least one rib fracture (n=1,344). All predictors were analyzed with linear regressions. …
The Evolution Of Sunset Magazine's Cooking Department: The Accommodation Of Men's And Women's Cooking In The 1930s, Jennifer Hoolhorst Pagano
The Evolution Of Sunset Magazine's Cooking Department: The Accommodation Of Men's And Women's Cooking In The 1930s, Jennifer Hoolhorst Pagano
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Western regional magazine Sunset has been published under a series of owners and publishers since 1898. In 1928, Sunset was purchased by Lawrence Lane, a Midwestern magazine executive who transformed it from a failing turn-of-the-century, general interest publication about the West, into a successful magazine about living in the West for the Western middle-class. Sunset had always been a magazine for men and women, and one that appealed to both male and female intellectuals at the time Lane purchased it. Lane and his editors attempted to interject more rigid middle-class ideals into a magazine that had espoused ideas that …
Early Care And Education Testimonios At The Borderlands, Jennifer Torres Siders
Early Care And Education Testimonios At The Borderlands, Jennifer Torres Siders
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Latinas represent a large proportion of the United States early care and education workforce, and thus have the potential to wield significant influence over the growth and development of millions of American children. However, the voices of Latina early childhood professionals often are missing in both research and mass media. Instead, social, political, and academic frames cast Latinas as foreign regardless of nationality, uneducated notwithstanding expertise, and passive despite action and influence. This testimonio analysis draws on Chicana feminist epistemology to re-center the perspectives of Latina child care providers and reveal more authentic insights on how they understand and perform …

Small-scale sport events have been argued to be sustainable form of tourism development for communities (Gibson, 1999). The purpose of this study was to analyze four small-scale sport events all operated by NIGSA (Nómadas International Group SA) in the Magallanes region of Chile. The four events at the core of this study were: Patagonian Expedition Race, Patagonian International Marathon, Ultra Trail Torres del Paine, and the Ultra Fiord which operate partially or completely inside the Torres del Paine National Park. As a biosphere reserve established by the United Nations, Torres del Paine National Park requires a sustainable perspective of event …
Student Engagement In Pacific Recreation's Programs, Services, And Facilities As A Predictor Of Participation In Sports Clubs, Dustin Rich
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Sports clubs are a program ran through Pacific Recreation at the University of the Pacific. This study determines whether using services and facilities that Pacific Recreation offers has a statistically significant relationship with students joining or participating in sports clubs.
METHOD: When a student comes into the Baun Fitness Center to work out, participate in a class, take part of personal training, or climb the rock tower, that student has to swipe into the facility and service of choice. The same process occurs for when a student wants to use external services like Intramural Sports and Informal Recreation. Quantitative data …
Effects Of A Group-Deposit Prize Draw On The Step Counts Of Adults, Alex J. Mccurdy
Effects Of A Group-Deposit Prize Draw On The Step Counts Of Adults, Alex J. Mccurdy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The World Health Organization (WHO, 2016) reports that 3.2 million deaths per year are attributable to physical inactivity, making it the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Physical inactivity is also a key risk factor for noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes (WHO, 2018). Globally, 1 in 4 adults is not active enough and, therefore, foregoes a myriad of health benefits associated with Physical Activity (PA; WHO, 2018). In the United States, only about 1 in 5 (21%) adults meet the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2018). …

An Autoethnographic Study: An Identity Lost And A Passage Discovered, Simone Shonte Martinez
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The professional careers of teachers with a chronic illness can sometimes be devastating. This study addresses the insufficient understanding of the identity crisis a teacher goes through when one is suddenly diagnosed with a chronic illness. While researching different types of theories, identity theory best fit this topic and my interest. Within identity theory, there are four perspectives to view identity. The four perspectives are Nature, Institution, Discourse, and Affinity identities. In order to understand identity, one must understand how identity is formed. Chronic illness identity is a change from all other identities that have been constructed. This study uses …
