[Review] Michael Lundblad, Editor, Animalities: Literary And Cultural Studies Beyond The Human. Edinburgh University Press, 2017. 249pp, Wendy Woodward

Animal Studies Journal

Lundblad’s introduction defines and separates human-animal studies, animality studies and posthumanism. While there are perhaps more cross-overs than Lundblad suggests, the introduction provides a lucid discussion of these fields, sub-fields and their provenance. In addition, each essay in Animalities locates its analysis in relation to these categorizations. Cary Wolfe’s essay on ‘The Poetics of Extinction’ considers the case of Martha, an individual, named passenger pigeon who was the last of her species, partly via Michael Pestel’s installation which memorialises her and seems to offer some hope that she might live again. Neel Ahuja continues with the spectre of extinction and …

Introduction: New Directions In Animal Advocacy, Dinesh Wadiwel, Peter Chen

Animal Studies Journal

The ‘political turn’ in animal studies (see Milligan, Boyer et al.; Garner and O’Sullivan; Cavalieri ‘Animal Liberation: A Political Perspective’) has offered some unique trajectories for realising improvements for animals. Where traditional animal ethics was dominated by a focus on normative concerns for how humans should act with respect to animals, the recent movement towards politics has effected a shift in favour of thinking about how human-animal relations are shaped by institutions, political structures and actors, the role of the state and private governance, power relations and problems of strategy. At least one benefit of this analysis is that it …

How Shall We Live Together? A Response To Paola Cavalieri, Sue Donaldson Jan 2019

How Shall We Live Together? A Response To Paola Cavalieri, Sue Donaldson

Animal Studies Journal

Paola Cavalieri asks whether the animal rights/liberation (AR/L) movement should be ‘selfsufficient and self-reliant’,2 and develop ‘an autonomous presence both in the political arena and in the electoral process’3 rather than focusing on alliance building with the broader Left. Cavalieri’s hesitation about alliance-building is motivated by worries about diffusion and loss of focus, but also by the thought that ‘humanism leads the worse-off to cling to their humanity to the detriment of animals’. Thus, acting ‘as a full member of the family of social justice struggles’ will lead either to wasting energy on alliances that never materialize, or to watering …

On The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Alliance Politics For Animal Liberation: A Response To Paola Cavalieri, Matthew Calarco Jan 2019

On The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Alliance Politics For Animal Liberation: A Response To Paola Cavalieri, Matthew Calarco

Animal Studies Journal

Paola Cavalieri’s article provides an incisive account of the current state of affairs in pro-animal discourse and activism. Taking her bearings from a radical pro-animal commitment to interspecies egalitarianism, Cavalieri expertly describes the shift that has taken place over the past decade from a focus on an ethics of personal purity to a politics of structural change. She correctly underscores the point that an individualistic ethic that prioritizes changes in personal consumption is ultimately unable to effect the kinds of widespread institutional change necessary to address and ameliorate the currently intolerable situation faced by billions of domesticated and wild animals. …

A Spira Inspired Approach To Animal Protection Advocacy For Rabbits In The Australian Meat Industry, Reem Lascelles, Alexandra Mcewan Jan 2019

A Spira Inspired Approach To Animal Protection Advocacy For Rabbits In The Australian Meat Industry, Reem Lascelles, Alexandra Mcewan

Animal Studies Journal

This paper explores the relevance of Henry Spira’s approach to the animal protection advocacy in the context of Australian rabbit meat farms. The Australian rabbit meat industry is a relatively unexplored area of animal protection scholarship. Of particular significance is the fact that, in contrast to the move towards ‘free range’ for other domestic species used for meat, there is no such thing, nor it seems will there ever be, ‘free range’ domestic rabbit meat. The status of ‘the rabbit’ as a pest species in Australia means that, in the domestic realm at least, the rabbit faces existence in a …

‘Fishing For Fun’: The Politics Of Recreational Fishing, Dinesh Wadiwel Jan 2019

‘Fishing For Fun’: The Politics Of Recreational Fishing, Dinesh Wadiwel

Animal Studies Journal

In this paper, I will seek to understand the peculiar politics of recreational fishing. While I will draw from international research, my focus here will be the problem as it is understood within Australia, a wealthy nation with high standards of living and relatively high participation rates in recreational fishing. The paper explores the conceptual issues that surround how we understand and frame recreational fishing as a form of hunting, drawing on Australian research to understand the extent and characteristics of this enterprise. The second section explores the institutional and epistemic dimensions of recreational fishing. I finally examine how animal …

The Fate Of The Illegible Animal: The Case Of The Australian Wild Donkey, Danielle Celermajer, Arian Wallach Jan 2019

The Fate Of The Illegible Animal: The Case Of The Australian Wild Donkey, Danielle Celermajer, Arian Wallach

Animal Studies Journal

The entanglement of donkey and human lives is both long and multidimensional, woven with the threads of economic inter-dependence, cultural and religious significance, militarism, friendship, ideas about and programs of conservation, and traditional Chinese medicine turned into a global industry. In this paper, we discuss four eras of entanglement of wild donkeys in Australia. During the first, now past, domesticated donkeys were exploited workers in the colonial project. In the second, present era, most Australian donkeys are unwanted wild animals, declared wildlife pests subject to mass eradication for conservation and livestock production. In the third emerging era donkeys are positioned …

Rehabilitation Counselor Clinical Judgment Model Application With Data From An Individualized Placement And Support Trial For Veterans Living With Spinal Cord Injuries, Kevin Fields

Theses and Dissertations

Employment rates for veterans with spinal cord injuries remain low despite legislation aimed at helping individuals with significant barriers to employment succeed in finding competitive work. As access to services and resultant outcomes become more scrutinized, the need for Rehabilitation Counselors to efficiently allocate resources grows more vital to the cause. Existing research supports a mediated path model of rehabilitation counselor clinical judgment asserting observations of disability severity, intelligence, and psychosocial adjustment lead to inferences of functional status and attribution thereof, which collectively influence predictions of successful rehabilitation. The current study investigated the variance attributable to this clinical judgement model …

An Assessment Of Human Resources For Health Hiring, Deployment And Retention, Procedures And Practices In Cross River And Bauchi States, Nigeria, Osasuyi Dirisu, Akinwumi Akinola, Ekechi Okereke, Godwin Unumeri, Ibrahim Suleiman, Aisha Jibril, George I. Eluwa

Reproductive Health

Primary health care (PHC) is the first contact in a healthcare system and, at its core, includes access to basic interventions that address health needs at the community level. These basic interventions are provided by key frontline health workers—nurses, midwives, and community health extension workers—critical for facilitating immediate access to maternal, newborn, and child health services at PHC facilities. Despite the critical roles of these healthworker cadres, their distribution is uneven and skewed—geographic and within levels of care and governments, in addition to poor distribution of skills—compounded by high attrition due to poor human resources for health (HRH) management and …

Health Financing And Family Planning In The Context Of Universal Health Care: Connecting The Discourse, Gabrielle Appleford, Saumya Ramarao

Reproductive Health

Financing is a major challenge and concern for the future of family planning (FP) programs. As countries commit to increasing access to and quality of FP services and to universal health care (UHC), it is crucial that UHC schemes include FP and other reproductive health services. While the importance of financing is recognized in relation to quality, the “how” of financing FP within the context of UHC is not well understood. This brief targets the “bridge” constituency that is coalescing between the health financing and FP communities of practice around a shared interest in making access to health services universal. …

Positioning Family Planning Quality Within Health Financing For Uhc: Connecting The Discourse, Gabrielle Appleford, Saumya Ramarao, Benjamin Bellows, Leah Jarvis Jan 2019

Positioning Family Planning Quality Within Health Financing For Uhc: Connecting The Discourse, Gabrielle Appleford, Saumya Ramarao, Benjamin Bellows, Leah Jarvis

Reproductive Health

Financing is a major challenge and concern for the future of the delivery of voluntary family planning (FP) services to clients, particularly in low- and middle-income countries with high unmet need and limited method choice. As countries commit to universal health coverage (UHC), it is crucial that UHC schemes include FP and other reproductive health (RH) services. Strategic purchasing of quality FP services from public and private—including for profit and not-for-profit—health-care providers could accelerate progress toward UHC. It is increasingly recognized that the FP2020 goals will not be met without adequate attention to quality, and that a sustained focus on …

Knowledge Management System And Tools Required For Effective Km Take-Up And Activities In Organisations In Nigeria, Abdurrahman Bello Onifade, Kazeem Abiodun Akinwade

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Knowledge management (KM) has become an integral and invaluable asset to organisational productivity in the 21st century. Observations have, however, shown that many organisations in Nigeria do not have knowledge management system (KMS) and do no practise KM; and in cases where KM practices exist, there seems to be indifference on the part of members in using the KMS. Perhaps, this could be due to lack of adequate awareness about the importance of KM practices and or the KM tools required for its effective take-up. This study, therefore, seeks to highlight and examine KMS and the tools required for effective …

Whilst, the associated development policies and government services for agricultural development under Thailand 4.0 in the Eastern Economic Corridor has potential implication to provide the opportunity for the agricultural community to greater their income and enhance well-being. However, there are few studies assessing the community capacity toward those opportunities. The capacity is the key feature for community development. It can also become the justification for accessibility into the new dynamic of the structural development. Insufficient or mismatched capacity with the current innovation activity and economic system could become a barrier for the community to access the range of project’s benefits. …
