Gender Competency In Public Administration Education, Nicole Elias, Maria J. D’Agostino
Gender Competency In Public Administration Education, Nicole Elias, Maria J. D’Agostino
Publications and Research
Sex and gender are evolving identity categories with emergent public policy and administration needs. To respond to the diverse landscape of sex and gender issues in the public sector, greater competency is needed. This research will contribute to the body of work on sex and gender in public administration by asking the following questions: (a) what do graduate students in Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs know about gender competency, (b) have graduate students learned gender competency in their MPA coursework, and (c) how can gender competency in MPA education be further developed and promoted? This study provides a critical …

Gender In Negotiation: Preparing Public Administrators For The 21st Century Workplace, Maria J. D’Agostino, Helisse Levine, Meghna Sabharwal
Publications and Research
This exploratory study questions whether Master of Public Administration programs prepare future public administrators to how gender plays out in negotiations that occur in organizations. Negotiated Order and Second-Generation Bias perspectives provide the theoretical basis to understand that negotiations in organizations may privilege masculine practices. In light of this gender leaning, the classroom is a necessary incubator for understanding gender differences in negotiation. Curricula and survey response data retrieved from NASPAA accredited MPA programs suggest that gender in negotiation is not being addressed in the MPA classroom. Public managers must negotiate for scarce organizational resources including salary, promotion, and other …

Latino Students And The Academic Library: A Primer For Action, Marta Bladek
Latino Students And The Academic Library: A Primer For Action, Marta Bladek
Publications and Research
As the growth in Latino college enrollment is expected to continue for years to come, academic libraries at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and beyond will be serving increasing numbers of Hispanic students. Since Latino educational attainment remains lower than than of other groups and academic libraries’ impact on retention, GPA and related educational outcomes has been well documented, it is crucial that academic libraries actively foster Latino students’ success. A review of the literature on Hispanic students and library use, the article also includes recommendations for practice and offers a local example to illustrate strategies libraries may implement to better …
Women In The Wage Economy: A New Gendered Division Of Labor Amongst The Inuit, Hannah Buehler
Women In The Wage Economy: A New Gendered Division Of Labor Amongst The Inuit, Hannah Buehler
Pitzer Senior Theses
Inuit constructions of gender in the pre-colonial period were centered around a gendered division of subsistence tasks. It is through this division of labor which gender roles, gendered socialization and spousal roles were formed. However, during the colonial period Inuit subsistence and the role it plays in Inuit society was rapidly and drastically changed. By analyzing the work of three different Arctic ethnographers documenting Inuit subsistence in different time periods and national contexts, this thesis will analyze how political, economic and environmental change in the Arctic has altered Inuit subsistence practices from European contact through the contemporary era. By analyzing …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On College Students’ Experiences, Shaafi A. Farooqi
Pitzer Senior Theses
This qualitative research project examines the role of socioeconomic status in shaping the experiences of students attending Pearson College, an elite liberal arts college in Southern California. One hour-long, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) students in order to better understand APIDA student experiences and their views on the college’s efforts to support class-based diversity and inclusion. Findings include insights into challenges faced by college students, how they understand privilege and identity, and where college students find support. These results have implications for Pearson College, and similar liberal arts colleges, to implement changes to …

Introduction To The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm: An Online Course For Librarians, Eric Kowalik, Leatha Miles-Edmonson, Vicki Rosen
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article discusses the development and delivery of a three-week asynchronous online course on Jesuit history, education, and the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) for librarians working in Association of Jesuit Colleges and University (AJCU) institutions. Created by two instruction librarians and one instructional designer from a pair of AJCU institutions, the course explores incorporating the IPP -- a contemplative learning model -- into a one-shot, single class library instruction session. Included is a practical description of the development, revision, marketing, and success of the online course, along with a list of the class contents. Over three course offerings in 2017 …

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In the sociology classroom, students expressed thoughts of denial of the importance of a number of social issues, including climate change. During this time, I was involved in two initiatives which were collaborative efforts to weave Ignatian Pedagogy with sustainability education. First, at Canisius College, we developed a Sustainability Initiative to embrace a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability in academics, community and campus culture. Second, I was invited to become involved with the AJCU Ecology Educators group working on the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability. Through the application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability tool kit, I took the opportunity to …

Law Librarian Scholarship
This one-day pre-conference workshop, presented by Steve Shadle at NASIG 2018, was based on an abridged version of the Serials Cooperative Cataloging Training Program (SCCTP) Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop.1 Two sections of the workshop materials were omitted in order to complete the workshop in one day: Module 5 - Describing Carriers and Content, and Module 9 - Identifying Appropriate Copy. Module 10 - Working with Copy, was covered briefly. The overall goal of the workshop was to enable participants to catalog a “straightforward” print serial resource and to be able to understand elements of a serials cataloging record. The workshop …

From Women-Staffed To Women-Led: Gender And Leadership In Academic Libraries, 1974-2018., Marta Bladek
Publications and Research
This article reviews post-1974 scholarly literature on women’s leadership in academic libraries, with the emphasis on the United States. The purpose of this synthesis is to highlight research areas and themes that have significantly expanded the profession’s knowledge about gender and its impact at the top administrative level. The article starts with a brief overview of theories of gender and leadership before tracing scholarship on the gendered career patterns singled out in Schiller’s work (1974). The article then focuses on additional issues related to gender and library administration, including leadership styles, perceptions of differences between male and female leaders, and …
Contingent Appointments In Academic Libraries: Management Challenges And Opportunities, Marta Bladek
Contingent Appointments In Academic Libraries: Management Challenges And Opportunities, Marta Bladek
Publications and Research
Academia’s overwhelming reliance on non-tenure track, or contingent, faculty is a well known fact. While the status and working conditions of contingent classroom faculty have been well studied and documented, the corresponding trend in academic libraries has not been explored as deeply. As this paper reviews the limited LIS literature on the subject, it aims to provide administrators and managers with a deeper understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of contingent appointments. It also offers strategies for fostering a workplace culture that recognizes contingent librarians’ contributions and promotes their professional growth.
Factionalism In The Democratic Party 1936-1964, Seth Manning
Factionalism In The Democratic Party 1936-1964, Seth Manning
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The period of 1936-1964 in the Democratic Party was one of intense factional conflict between the rising Northern liberals, buoyed by FDR’s presidency, and the Southern conservatives who had dominated the party for a half-century. Intertwined prominently with the struggle for civil rights, this period illustrates the complex battles that held the fate of other issues such as labor, foreign policy, and economic ideology in the balance. This thesis aims to explain how and why the Northern liberal faction came to defeat the Southern conservatives in the Democratic Party through a multi-faceted approach examining organizations, strategy, arenas of competition, and …

Employee financial wellness programs (EFWPs) are gaining in popularity as a strategy to address workers' financial challenges and goals beyond offering health and retirement benefits. Most workers say they are stressed about their finances1 and a third are less productive at work because of this stress.2 Although employers are increasingly interested in offering EFWPs, little research has been conducted concerning these workplace financial products and services.
Salient Ballot Measures And The Millennial Vote, Scott J. Lacombe, Courtney Juelich
Salient Ballot Measures And The Millennial Vote, Scott J. Lacombe, Courtney Juelich
Government: Faculty Publications
We explore the relationship between ballot measures on issues salient to Millennials and their turnout in presidential and midterm elections. Both scholars and observers in the media have worried about decreasing levels of citizen participation, particularly among young voters. We demonstrate that one way to engage Millennials into traditional forms of political participation is through ballot measures that focus on issues salient to their generation (marijuana liberalization and higher education reform). We show that not only do these measures increase Millennial voting, but they erase difference in turnout levels between Millennials and older generations. This effect is primarily concentrated in …
Friends, Relatives, Sanity, And Health: The Costs Of Politics, Kevin Smith, Matthew V. Hibbing, John R. Hibbing
Friends, Relatives, Sanity, And Health: The Costs Of Politics, Kevin Smith, Matthew V. Hibbing, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Political scientists have long known that political involvement exacts costs but they have typically defined these costs in relatively narrow, largely economic terms. Though anecdotal evidence suggests that the costs of politics may in fact extend beyond economics to frayed personal relationships, compromised emotional stability, and even physical problems, no systematic evidence on these broader costs exists. We construct and validate batteries of survey items that delineate the physical, social, and emotional costs of political engagement and administer these items to a demographically representative sample of U.S. adults. The results suggest that a large number of Americans believe their physical …

Do People Really Become More Conservative As They Age?, Johnathan C. Peterson, Kevin Smith, John Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Folk wisdom has long held that people become more politically conservative as they grow older, although several empirical studies suggest political attitudes are stable across time. Using data from the Michigan Youth-Parent So- cialization Panel Study, we analyze attitudinal change over a major portion of the adult life span. We document changes in party identification, self-reported ideology, and selected issue positions over this time period and place these changes in context by comparing them with contemporaneous national averages. Consistent with previous research but con- trary to folk wisdom, our results indicate that political attitudes are remarkably stable over the long …
