Social Justice Class Papers

Defining the phrase “Social Justice” is itself far from complex and can mean many different things to many people. Going into this Social Justice class, I wasn’t prepared to see the world for how it is and all of the injustice that comes with it. I started this personal manifesto off with a quote from Paulo Coelho because what he says is significant to how our generation will thrive justly in the coming years. To me, social justice means equal opportunity to all. Opportunity to be loved for who they are and be able to work and provide for their …

Social Justice Class Papers

Over the course of this semester, I have studied society and the justice system that is connected to it. When answering the question, “What is Social Justice”, it is not something easily answered in just a sentence or two. Social justice is a complex matter that is ever-changing and being newly defined each day. In simple terms, I define social justice as bettering society through the laws and regulations set to the society itself. It is finding balance among those living in society. Obviously, it is not physically possible to please everyone, but the social justice system strives to accomplish …

What Is Social Justice?, Michael Soisson

The following response is my opinion on social justice and how it has played out in my personal life and the community around me. What Is Social Justice?, Ellyn R. Bailey

Social Justice Class Papers

What is social justice? I love this question because it poses many questions that we all need to ponder over. As a country we are in a constant state of fighting for what we believe in. That is the beauty of this country, that is why people immigrate here. Even so, when protesting for the freedoms that we all rightly deserve we need to be careful that it is worth fighting for. When you look up the term “Social Justice” in the MW dictionary it says, “a state or doctrine of egalitarianism” (Merriam Webster, Incorporated). This definition did not help …

Social Justice Class Papers

When first thinking about the question of “What is Social Justice?”, I knew the words “help” and “caring” had to be included, but I didn’t really know-how. Today’s world is full of people from all walks of life and we as humans should strive to understand those around us. No matter how different others are from us, everyone has their own story and their own struggles. While it is a lot easier said than done, understanding people takes empathy and open-mindedness. Throughout the course, I truly realized how diverse our world is and how peace and freedom do not come …

What Is Social Justice?, Mary Madison Tolbert

Social Justice Class Papers

Many people have come to think that the values taught in the Bible and modern-day social justice initiatives cannot coincide. Through taking a closer look at the Bible and researching in various courses, social justice is proved to be an essential part of Christianity. Presented in this credo are excerpts from the Bible that showcase the importance of social justice and a take on the modern American church's response to secular justice initiatives.

The Technology Fast: Transformational Learning As Changes In Behavior And Perception Beyond The Classroom, Daniel Burton Shank, Nathan Shank, Mallory North Nov 2020

The Technology Fast: Transformational Learning As Changes In Behavior And Perception Beyond The Classroom, Daniel Burton Shank, Nathan Shank, Mallory North

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Digital technology has become an integral, if not overwhelming, part of many people’s lives. As the use and pervasiveness of technology has increased, the popularity of taking a sabbath from it has also increased. In this paper we ask if and how a technology fast assignment influences students’ lives beyond the classroom. Transformative learning, supported by active and experiential learning, suggests that in order for students to reap the greatest benefits of education, learning must influence perceptions and behavior outside of the class environment. In two semesters of “Human-Computer Interaction” classes, students were assigned a technology fast in which they …

How Perpetrator Identity (Sometimes) Influences Media Framing Attacks As “Terrorism” Or “Mental Illness”, Allison E. Betus, Erin M. Kearns, Anthony F. Lemieux Nov 2020

How Perpetrator Identity (Sometimes) Influences Media Framing Attacks As “Terrorism” Or “Mental Illness”, Allison E. Betus, Erin M. Kearns, Anthony F. Lemieux

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Do media frame attacks with Muslim perpetrators as “terrorism” and attacks with White perpetrators as the result of “mental illness”? Despite public speculation and limited academic work with relatively small subsets of cases, there have been no systematic analyses of potential biases in how media frame terrorism. We addressed this gap by examining the text of print news coverage of all terrorist attacks in the United States between 2006 and 2015. Controlling for fatalities, affiliation with a group, and existing mental illness, the odds that an article references terrorism are approximately five times greater for a Muslim versus a non-Muslim …

Homeless And Helpless: How The United States Has Failed Those With Severe And Persistent Mental Illness, Ashley Gorfido Nov 2020

Homeless And Helpless: How The United States Has Failed Those With Severe And Persistent Mental Illness, Ashley Gorfido

Journal of Law and Health

The United States has failed its citizens who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). Homelessness is one of the most obvious manifestations of this failure. The combination of a lack of effective treatment, inadequate entitlement programs such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and subpar housing options form systemic barriers that prevent people suffering from mental illness from being able to obtain adequate housing. Cultural beliefs within the United States regarding who is homeless and what homelessness means also play a significant role in the development of positively impactful social welfare programs.

Part II of this Note reviews …

This cross-sectional study based on Indonesian Family Life Survey-5 2014–2015 was conducted among 3,386 adults (≥ 40 years) living in 13 provinces in Indonesia during the study period. Un-Affirmative Action: The Persistence Of Anti-Black Racism In The Higher Education System Of Postcolonial Brazil, Zakiya T. Daniel

Honors College Theses

Public education systems institutionalize the socialization process which directly disseminates cultural and national values and assimilates the population through mass education. But how does colonial-era anti-Black racism persist in the higher education institutions of contemporary postcolonial societies? Using the Federative Republic of Brazil as a case study, I examine the effects of incomplete decolonization, anti-Blackness, and the role of history, economics, and pedagogy on social outcomes that exclude and marginalize Black and other minority groups. The Brazilian higher education system follows a pattern centered around anti-Black racism which serves to disempower Black, Brown, and Indigenous populations during the colonial and …

“When It’S Time To Come Together, We Come Together”: Reconceptualizing Theories Of Self-Efficacy For Health Information Practices Within Lgbtqia+ Communities, Alexander N. Vera, Travis L. Wagner, Vanessa L. Kitzie

Student Publications

This chapter addresses the shortcomings of current self-efficacy models describing the health information practices of LGBTQIA+ communities. Informed by semi-structured interviews with 30 LGBTQIA+ community leaders from South Carolina, findings demonstrate how their self-efficacy operates beyond HIV/AIDS research while complicating traditional models that isolate an individual’s health information practices from their abundant communal experiences. Findings also suggest that participants engage with health information and resources in ways deemed unhealthy or harmful by healthcare providers. However, such practices are nuanced, and participants carefully navigate them, balancing concerns for community safety and well-being over traditional engagements with healthcare infrastructures. These findings have …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter illustrates the core environmental values of the Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) people on the Pacific coast of Canada to explore how they manifest in the traditional management of coastal natural resources. The authors’ survey of environmental values is based on the authentic knowledge of Chief Adam Dick, a co-author of the chapter. The chapter argues that talking about Indigenous Knowledge without the broader context of environmental values can lead to serious scholarly misunderstandings and insists that long-term collaborations between academic researchers and specialized knowledge holders from Indigenous communities is necessary in order to represent Indigenous Knowledge accurately.

This chapter illustrates …
