Will The Number Of Behavioral Anchors Increase Rater Accuracy In Performance Evaluations?, Kelsey Byerly, Mark Frame Ph.D.
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This research project assesses whether the number of behavioral anchors increases rater accuracy in performance evaluations. Specifically, it observes whether a behavioral anchor rating scale (BARS) with five behavioral anchors will be more accurate in scoring performance evaluations than BARS with three behavioral anchors. The accuracy of the ratings is assessed in terms of scale alphas, absolute differences between ratings and true score estimates, and over and under rating. In addition, this study explores whether rating accuracy varies among raters with different degrees of conscientiousness. All participants will be recruited from Middle Tennessee State University and Amazon’s MTurk. The study …
A New Short Measure Of The Dark Tetrad, Sarah Dean, Dr. Michael Hein, Alexander T. Jackson, Amanda Terry
A New Short Measure Of The Dark Tetrad, Sarah Dean, Dr. Michael Hein, Alexander T. Jackson, Amanda Terry
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This paper proposes a research project that aims to develop a new short measure of the Dark Tetrad, which is a term used to describe the combination of the dark personality traits of Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and sadism. These dark personality traits are characterized by social offensive traits that are not extreme enough to garner clinical attention. There is a need for a short measure of the Dark Tetrad because 1) there is currently no short measure of the Dark Tetrad, and 2) the current short measures of the Dark Triad (which includes Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) are inconsistent with …
Re-Conceptualizing And Measuring Tacit Knowledge, Mariyam Sumaiya, Alexander Jackson, Ashley Pearson
Re-Conceptualizing And Measuring Tacit Knowledge, Mariyam Sumaiya, Alexander Jackson, Ashley Pearson
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This paper proposes to develop a new measure of tacit knowledge based on an updated definition that distinguishes tacit knowledge and tacit skills which we build based on Taylor’s taxonomy (2007). Since tacit knowledge is domain specific, we also propose a new method of measuring tacit knowledge that can be replicated across domains. Additionally, we study the connection between tacit knowledge and mindfulness. This study occurs in two stages. The participants in the first stage will be subject matter experts in the field of research methodology. These individuals will receive a questionnaire seeking critical incidents based on their experiences, which …
The Effects Of Covid-19 On Organizational Trust, Hannah Ferriell, Courtney Keim
The Effects Of Covid-19 On Organizational Trust, Hannah Ferriell, Courtney Keim
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Organizational trust is vital to the psychological health of employees and is related to a myriad of benefits (job satisfaction, work engagement; Chughtai, Byrne, & Flood, 2015; Shockley-Zalabak, Ellis, & Winograd, 2000). Unfortunately, many employees do not trust their employers, which implies that the organizations for which those employees work may be missing out on the positive effects associated with trust (American Psychological Association, 2018). Organizational change can exacerbate feelings of distrust (Morgan & Zeffane, 2003). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations across the world are now having their employees work from home and are instituting new safety precautions, examples …
The Impact Of Turnover On Team Performance Within Major League Soccer Teams, Austin Boynton, Glenn Littlepage, Mike Hein, Dana Fuller
The Impact Of Turnover On Team Performance Within Major League Soccer Teams, Austin Boynton, Glenn Littlepage, Mike Hein, Dana Fuller
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Success within teams is a result of many factors and may vary across situations and the teams themselves being examined (Morgan, Campione, and Jerrell, 2004). Take for example team success within business. Some may predict that success within teams is due to individual & collaborative efforts, individual & team efficacy, and a shared mental model. But success depends on the context in which the work takes places as well as other factors such as if the work encourages a highly collaborative environment versus work that requires low collaboration within job task completion. One factor not entirely addressed is variance within …

Introduction Of The Etsu Ballad Health Strong Brain Institute, Chelsea L. Robertson, Tess A. Simpson
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) contribute to shorter, less healthy, and less productive lives. ACEs result from growing up in households with addiction, mental illness, abuse, or loss, all of which expose children to chronic toxic stress, and produce measurable structural changes in children’s developing brains that last a lifetime. These changes, which include an overdeveloped stress response system that impairs learning and planning and results in underdeveloped self-regulatory systems, impact performance in the workplace, especially in institutions of higher education. ACEs in East Tennessee and at ETSU are higher than the national average. About 1 in 4 East Tennesseeans have …

Linkedin For Searching Better Job Opportunity: Passive Jobseekers’ Perceived Experience, Md Sajjad Hosain, Ping Liu
The Qualitative Report
LinkedIn is a famous online social networking platform for the jobholders, jobseekers and employers although their purposes vary. Passive jobseekers are those who already have jobs but are searching for better alternatives. In this paper, we tried to identify the passive jobseekers’ perceived experience towards LinkedIn as a job searching platform. We used Focused Group Discussion (FGD) method to unmask the perception of 150 respondents from Bangladesh and India who use LinkedIn as professional social networking site frequently. After summarizing the FGD results, it was revealed that LinkedIn is the most preferred source of job search tool among the passive …
Youth’S Usage Of New Media: Exploring Learning And Identity Formation, Nurzali Ismail
Youth’S Usage Of New Media: Exploring Learning And Identity Formation, Nurzali Ismail
The Qualitative Report
This study investigated youth’s usage of new media technologies in and out of school as well as how it relates to learning and identity formation. Even though youth’s usage of new media in school is inferior compared to out of school, it does not mean that both contexts are disconnected. In fact, there is a possible relationship established between both contexts and such connection can prove to be significant for youth’s learning and identity formation. Communities of Practice (COPs) was adopted as the theoretical foundation of the study. The research method employed was case study. Data collection involved six 13 …
From Participants To Co-Researchers: Methodological Alterations To A Qualitative Case Study, Elizabeth M. Pope
From Participants To Co-Researchers: Methodological Alterations To A Qualitative Case Study, Elizabeth M. Pope
The Qualitative Report
Researchers request a variety of levels of engagement from their participants in a research study. This can range from merely serving as a data generation opportunity to being actively involved in each stage of the project. The latter is a co-researcher. In this paper, I explore how nine participants in a qualitative case study became co-researchers by the study’s conclusion. The increase in their active participation required methodological alterations to the project while I conducted the study. This paper presents these alterations by examining: (1) my position as a researcher; (2) my relationship with the participants; (3) the trajectory of …

Blackness, Gender And The State: Afro Women's Organizations In Contemporary Ecuador, Beatriz A. Juarez-Rodriguez
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation presents an ethnographic analysis of the Afro women’s social organization CONAMUNE (Coordinadora Nacional de Mujeres Negras del Ecuador), the political thought and praxis of its members and their entanglement with myriad ethno-racial political spaces in contemporary Ecuador. CONAMUNE is an umbrella organization comprised of Afro women’s grassroots organizations from different provinces of Ecuador. In addition to their activities within CONAMUNE, many of the women with whom I worked have sought out positions of government employment or political representation (as teachers and principals, as employees of government ministries or programs, as local municipal councillors, etc.), through which they bring …

Challenges And Opportunities For Forensics Programs: Offering Debate And Individual Events, Edward A. Hinck
Challenges And Opportunities For Forensics Programs: Offering Debate And Individual Events, Edward A. Hinck
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the forces that might account for this shift in the focus of programs, to consider some of the values served by broad-based programs, and identify some of the challenges faced by directors of programs that strive to offer opportunities in both debate and individual events. Despite some sentiment that narrowly focused programs deliver the greatest degree of educational impact for the resources invested, in some instances broad-based programs might play a central role in the educational mission of a department or college. On these grounds, the forensic community should embrace diversity …
Facilitating Dual Service Programs: Imperatives For The Future Of Forensics, Terry L. West
Facilitating Dual Service Programs: Imperatives For The Future Of Forensics, Terry L. West
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
I do not recall the last time I was at any sort of gathering of directors of forensics for any length of time when the discussion did not at some point turn to the issue of program mortality. Everyone has a story to tell of a program that recently ended, or is at risk of doing so. The most difficult moment in my own forensic career came only three years ago, when secret political maneuverings by a couple of self-aggrandizing administrators (who have since flown from their positions) put an end to a forensics program that was over 100 years …
Understanding The Hyphen: Addressing The Debate-Ie Divide, Brian Swafford
Understanding The Hyphen: Addressing The Debate-Ie Divide, Brian Swafford
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
At the 2008 National Forensics Association National Championship Tournament, a special meeting was held for the coaches of Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debaters. At this meeting, those in attendance attempted to voice concerns about both the perceived "slights" and the actual structures in place (like sweepstakes formulas, awards, and qualifications) from the larger NFA community, made up of individual events (IE) coaches. Issues like limited judge strikes or mutually preferred judging, changing the schedule so that debaters did not go first and last on competition days, and allowing for oral comments by judges were all discussed. But at the heart of this …

Relating To Publics: An Additional Role Of The Director Of Forensics, Ryan Lauth
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Without fostering effective relationships with students, departments and administrators, a forensic program can easily succumb to budget cuts. This paper attempts to analyze the relationships that must be managed for a director of forensics to run a successful program. To this end, a review of the literature is given, an analysis of this literature is conducted and research questions are given that will further enrich future inquiry into the public relations role of the director of forensics.

Perceptions Of Past Competitors: Presentation Of The Data, Leah White, Larry Schnoor, Grant Anderson
Perceptions Of Past Competitors: Presentation Of The Data, Leah White, Larry Schnoor, Grant Anderson
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
In the past five years several well established forensic programs in our region have been discontinued. The reasons given to justify these decisions often centered on a lack of resources available to sustain the programs. Certainly the presence of scarce resources in an academic setting is understandable, but what many current coaches and competitors found especially concerning was the perceived lack of resistance by faculty at those institutions who were themselves once forensic competitors and coaches. In fact, in some cases former competitors were active and vocal supporters of the decision to end their institution‟s forensic program. The idea for …

"No, It Has Nothing To Do With Csi": Using Public Relations To Promote New Forensic Programs, Christopher J. Fenner
"No, It Has Nothing To Do With Csi": Using Public Relations To Promote New Forensic Programs, Christopher J. Fenner
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Directors of new forensic programs are commonly faced with the challenge of building program support within communities that have little, if any, prior knowledge of competitive forensics. The diversity of forensic events, organizations, and awards can make message development and program promotion a daunting task. The organizing schemata of a public relations campaign and an understanding of college and community media needs can be powerful tools for a new program director. This report provides forensic directors with specific strategies and tactics for implementing a public relations campaign to build program support.
Uncertainity In Spontaneity: Toward An Epistemic Impromptu, Michael Steudeman
Uncertainity In Spontaneity: Toward An Epistemic Impromptu, Michael Steudeman
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
This paper reviews the recent argument that forensics is epistemic, suggesting that those who adopt that metaphor could serve themselves better by approaching impromptu speaking as an epistemic exercise. It draws upon Pat Gehrke's critique of debate pedagogy to form a framework to analyze impromptu as it is currently performed-and its obsession with starting from the truth, espousing all views with certainty, and adhering to a linear model of analysis. Finally, it offers several options for those impromptuers wishing to break the mold, arguing that the so called "mistakes" made by beginning impromptuers could, with practice, lead to more insightful …
