This paper examines how discursive power shapes LGBTQ+ community health information practices. Informed by analysis of 10 information world maps drawn by SC LGBTQ+ community leaders, our findings indicate that while community can be a valuable construct to reject mainstream discourses of regulation and correction, it inevitably is fraught and not representative of all LGBTQ+ individuals. Findings can inform strategies for community leaders to facilitate more equitable information flow among members by identifying key structural elements impeding this flow at the community level.

Searching For A “Home”: Examining The Experiences Of Confucian Asian College Students With Third Culture Kid Backgrounds, Yuima Mizutani
Dissertations
Third culture kids (TCKs) spend their childhood and adolescence outside of their home countries. Because of their unique backgrounds, TCKs and adult TCKs face challenges including identity development, low self-esteem, lack of connection with their home countries, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, adjustment disorder, and others. Although the number of TCKs is increasing due to globalization, this population has been understudied. Moreover, most existing research has focused on TCKs in Western countries. Few researchers have studied Confucian Asian adult TCKs; that is, adult TCKs from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and others. Confucian Asian countries have collectivistic cultures …

On The Importance Of Context: Examining The Applicability Of Infertility Insurance Mandates In The United States Using A Mixed-Methods Study Design, Nathanael B. Stanley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Accessibility of infertility services is disproportionately experienced in the United States. Although there exist state-based health insurance mandates for infertility services, these mandates contain language that disqualify people from using them. In order to better understand why these mandates are not able to reduce the financial burden and bridge the income disparity for using infertility services, the purpose of this study is to add context to the applicability of these insurance mandates through qualitative and quantitative inquiry. Using the Glass and McAtee model of risk regulators as an operational paradigm, this research explores the role of environmental context, or “place”, …

The ongoing pandemic is a global challenge that has resulted in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. It has severely affected the economy and social integrity of most of the nations. Everyone who has lived through this period of uncertainty has acknowledged the fact that these circumstances have changed the way of life of people across the globe. While there has been a rising concern about the severity of the health challenges faced by the general population, especially vulnerable is the situation of the elderly, the children, health professionals, and also academicians who are braving the mal-effects of this grave onslaught …
Ten Years Of Marriage And Cohabitation Research In The Journal Of Family And Economic Issues, Jeffrey P. Dew
Ten Years Of Marriage And Cohabitation Research In The Journal Of Family And Economic Issues, Jeffrey P. Dew
Faculty Publications
I reviewed the 36 marriage and cohabitation studies from the Journal of Family and Economic Issues articles published between 2010–2019. Nearly all of the studies used quantitative methods, and two-thirds of them used publicly available nationally-representative data. The studies fell into roughly five, unevenly sized groups: family structure, relationship quality, division of labor/employment, money management, and an “other” category. Suggestions for future research include applying some of the important questions within the articles to underrepresented groups, further examining the process of how finances and relationship quality interrelate and doing more applied and translational research.
Beyond The Capitalist Workplace: How The Production Of Surplus Across The Economy Keeps Producers Divided, Costas Panayotakis
Beyond The Capitalist Workplace: How The Production Of Surplus Across The Economy Keeps Producers Divided, Costas Panayotakis
Publications and Research
This article analyzes the public and household sectors of the economy as sites of surplus production within contemporary capitalist societies. It also shows how the coexistence of structurally distinct spheres of surplus production creates divisions among workers in the private, public, and household sectors of the economy, thus amplifying the racial, gender, and other divisions which have often in the past kept working people divided. Fueling these cross-sector divisions is the appearance that private-sector workers are paid for their labor rather than for their labor-power. Thus, this article also explores an implication of this appearance which Karl Marx, the thinker …

One of the 12 Grand Challenges facing contemporary social work is to close the health gap experienced by those in historically marginalized communities (Uehara et al., 2013). As social workers, we seek to understand the individual, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors along with the structural inequities leading to initiation and continuation of substance misuse. We are constantly contextualizing the circumstances under which substance misuse occurs, as well as contextualizing our approaches to addressing this issue from both a public health and social justice perspective. In order to adequately meet this challenge, considerably more research-based knowledge on the substance use treatment …

Essays On Share Repurchases And Boom-Bust Cycles, Bohan Li
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My doctoral dissertation consists of three chapters on financial economics. In the first chapter, I examine whether a firm's share repurchases and issuances reveal information on its future 2-year stock returns. Firm-quarter observations with repurchases or issuances are each divided into twenty 5-percentile bins sorted by their magnitude. I regress 2-year future stock returns on the bins and find a non-linear relationship between the change in shares outstanding and returns. Firms making repurchases (issuances) of less than 9.3% (1.4%) of shares outstanding outperform the equal-weight portfolio by 6.4% (3.9%). These observations account for 90% of repurchases and 70% of issuances. …

Wichita State University is known for its advances in STEM research for many decades, but there were few inventions patented by WSU. In recent years, commercialization of the results of applied research, especially bioengineering, became a university focus; the number of WSU owned patents increased significantly. WSU initiated several initiatives to support university inventors. These included the development of the Innovation Campus and WSU Venture. The Wichita State University Libraries decided to join these efforts by not only providing information to inventors as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center but to archive and increase awareness of their patents. To increase …

A Brief History Of Academic Dress In The Middle East And The Maghreb, Valentina S. Grub
Transactions of the Burgon Society
There are hundreds of universities in the Middle East and the Maghreb, yet the academic dress that they wear, if any, varies widely. Colour standards for hoods are non-existent, and gown shapes vary among British, American, and European shapes, sometimes incorporating elements of each into a single gown, and elaborated with local cultural details. This article examines the current, fluid state of academic dress in the region, where it is not indigenous and is one element of the after-effects of the imposed colonial educational systems.
