Mentoring For Capacity Building Of Librarians In Private Universities In South West Nigeria, Omobolanle Seri Fasola, Philomena Abieyuwa Mamudu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper examined mentoring of librarians for capacity building in private universities in Nigeria. The survey research method was used with questionnaire formulated in line with the research questions put forward. The total enumeration method was used to select librarians and library officers in selected private universities in South-West Nigeria. Data was analyzed using frequency count and statistical mean. Findings revealed that the most prevalent strategy for mentoring practiced in libraries in private universities was senior professionals sharing their wealth of knowledge with younger ones (97.2%). This was aided by the fact that younger inexperienced librarians sought advice from more …

Young Adults' Short-Term Trajectories Of Moderate Physical Activity: Relations With Self-Evaluation Processes, Alex .. Garn, Kelly L. Simonton Sep 2020

Young Adults' Short-Term Trajectories Of Moderate Physical Activity: Relations With Self-Evaluation Processes, Alex .. Garn, Kelly L. Simonton

Faculty Publications

Young adults face numerous barriers that can undermine their engagement in healthy behaviors. For example, young adults on average experience disproportionally large declines in physical activity (PA) participation compared to other demographic groups. Self-evaluation processes may help explain these declines. This study investigated young adults' weekly trajectories of moderate physical activity, exploring self-evaluation processes, including self-efficacy and shame as time-varying covariates. A total of 71 young adults (Mage = 21.25,SD= 1.18; 55% male) reported moderate physical activity, exercise self-efficacy, and anticipated shame toward exercise once a week for 5 weeks. Latent growth curve models showed that a linear slope fit …

Comparing Profitability And Management Factors Across Operation Type: Independent Vs. Contract Growing, Elliott James Dennis Sep 2020

Comparing Profitability And Management Factors Across Operation Type: Independent Vs. Contract Growing, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

First paragraph:

There is strong local and national interest in adding hog barns to existing row crop operations. Declining on farm income over the past several years has accelerated this interest. Grain operations cite diversifying farm income, adding another family to the farm operation, and/or replacing commercial fertilizer expense as the primary reasons for adding a hog barn.

Developing Employment Environments Where Individuals With Asd Thrive: Using Machine Learning To Explore Employer Policies And Practices, Amy Jane Griffiths, Amy E. Hurley Hanson, Cristina M. Giannantonio, Sneha Kohli Mathur, Kayleigh Hyde, Erik Linstead

Education Faculty Articles and Research

An online survey instrument was developed to assess employers’ perspectives on hiring job candidates with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The investigators used K-means clustering to categorize companies in clusters based on their hiring practices related to individuals with ASD. This methodology allowed the investigators to assess and compare the various factors of businesses that successfully hire employees with ASD versus those that do not. The cluster analysis indicated that company structures, policies and practices, and perceptions, as well as the needs of employers and employees, were important in determining who would successfully hire individuals with ASD. Key areas that require …

We Studied What Happens When Guys Add Their Cats To Their Dating App Profiles, Lori Kogan, Shelly Volsche

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

If you’ve used a dating app, you’ll know the importance of choosing good profile pics.

These photos don’t just relay attractiveness; a recent study suggested that 43% of people think they can get a sense of someone’s personality by their picture. You might guess that someone who has included a photo of themselves hiking is an outdoorsy type of person.

But as scientists who study human-animal interactions, we wanted to know what this meant for pet owners – in particular, male cat owners.

If you’re a guy who owns a cat, what kind of effect does it have on suitors …

Innovating The Study Of Context: Using A Qualitative Study On Subjugation And Resistance To Explore The Utility Of Foucauldian Governmentality As A Framework For Enriching Situational Analyses, Hannah Kia, Carol Strike, Daniel Grace, Lori E. Ross Sep 2020

Ross

The Qualitative Report

Situational analysis has, as an emerging poststructuralist approach to grounded theory, recently grown in use across a diverse range of disciplines and substantive areas. In this paper, we consider the complementarity of Foucauldian governmentality as a theoretical framework for supporting and enriching situational analyses. Our work is based on the findings of a recent study, informed by situational analysis, in which we interviewed 27 HIV-positive (n=16) and HIV-negative (n=11) gay men ages 50 and over about their health care experiences, and used these data to examine processes of subjugation and resistance reflected in their accounts. Drawing on our analytical process, …

Using Digital Technology To Address Confirmability And Scalability In Thematic Analysis Of Participant-Provided Data, Chung Joo Chung, J. Patrick Biddix, Han Woo Park

The Qualitative Report

This article presents a technique for analyzing large-scale qualitative data to address considerations for scalability and confirmability in thematic analysis of participant-provided data. A network approach provides a consistent means of coding that scales with the size of the dataset and is verifiable using standardized methods. This form of data analysis can be used with smaller data sources including interview transcripts as well as large data sources such as open-ended survey responses. A constructivist (inductive) approach is maintained and needed, however, to aid in interpretation of latent constructs. In this article, we provide both a conceptual overview of the co-word …

Biased Beliefs And Entry Into Scientific Careers, Ina Ganguli, Patrick Gaulé, Danijela Vuletić Čugalj Sep 2020

Biased Beliefs And Entry Into Scientific Careers, Ina Ganguli, Patrick Gaulé, Danijela Vuletić Čugalj

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We investigate whether excessively optimistic beliefs play a role in the persistent demand for doctoral and postdoctoral training in science. We elicit the beliefs and career preferences of doctoral students through a novel survey and randomize the provision of structured information on the true state of the academic market and information through role models on nonacademic careers. One year later, both treatments lead students to update their beliefs about the academic market and impact career preferences. However, we do not find an effect on actual career outcomes two years postintervention.

How Work Constrains Leisure: New Ideas And Directions For Interdisciplinary Research, Laruen Kuykendall, Ze Zhu, Lydia Craig Sep 2020

How Work Constrains Leisure: New Ideas And Directions For Interdisciplinary Research, Laruen Kuykendall, Ze Zhu, Lydia Craig

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this commentary, we note the lack of emphasis on work-related factors in the leisure constraints literature. We highlight three work-related factors that we think warrant investigation as leisure constraints: (1) labor practices related to work scheduling, (2) organizational norms, and (3) work supervisors. We discuss relevant organizational psychology literatures and note that future research focusing on work-related factors could broaden knowledge about leisure constraints and illuminate new paths forward for improving employees’ leisure experiences. We emphasize that addressing these work-related constraints likely requires moving beyond individual-directed strategies and focusing on contextual factors (e.g., organizational policies and practices) that could …

Impacts Of Mental Health First Aid On Mental Health Literacy And Stigma, Junseon Hwang Sep 2020

Impacts Of Mental Health First Aid On Mental Health Literacy And Stigma, Junseon Hwang

Student Theses

Mental Health First Aid has been developed to train the general public to give initial support to those in mental health crisis and development. The effectiveness of Mental Health First Aid has been questioned due to its relatively short history of the course. Mental Health First Aid was recently widely-disseminated in New York City as part of the ThriveNYC initiative. While most studies were supportive of the training, there has been no study that specifically examines New York residents. We recruited 328 New York residents who self-reported whether or not they have participated in Mental Health First Aid via Amazon …

Cash Transfers And Health, Sicong Sun, Jin Huang, Darrell Hudson, Michael Sherraden Sep 2020

Cash Transfers And Health, Sicong Sun, Jin Huang, Darrell Hudson, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Financial resources are known to affect health outcomes. Many types of social policies and programs, including social assistance and social insurance, have been implemented around the world to increase financial resources. As an overall term, we refer to these as cash transfers. In this article, we discuss whether, how, for whom, and to what extent purposeful cash transfers may improve health, both theoretically and empirically. The overall finding is that cash transfers are very positive, but as usual, there are many complexities and variations. Continuing research and policy innovation—for example, universal basic income and universal Child Development Accounts—are likely to …

The Sensitivity Of Repeat And Near Repeat Analysis To Geocoding Algorithms, Cory P. Haberman, David Hatten, Jeremy G. Carter, Eric L. Piza Sep 2020

The Sensitivity Of Repeat And Near Repeat Analysis To Geocoding Algorithms, Cory P. Haberman, David Hatten, Jeremy G. Carter, Eric L. Piza

Publications and Research

Purpose: To determine if repeat and near repeat analysis is sensitive to the geocoding algorithm used for the underlying crime incident data.

Methods: The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department provided 2016 crime incident data for five crime types: (1) shootings, (2) robberies, (3) residential burglaries, (4) theft of automobiles, and (5) theft from automobiles. The incident data were geocoded using a dual ranges algorithm and a composite algorithm. First, descriptive analysis of the distances between the two point patterns were conducted. Second, repeat and near repeat analysis was performed. Third, the resulting repeat and near repeat patterns were compared across geocoding …
