Rapid Facial Reactions Of Emotional Expressions As A Function Of Trait Sadism, Cathleen Fleury
Rapid Facial Reactions Of Emotional Expressions As A Function Of Trait Sadism, Cathleen Fleury
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Using electromyography (EMG), it has been shown that facial muscles imperceptibly mirror the facial expressions of others, a phenomenon referred to as rapid facial reactions (RFRs). It was previously believed to follow the direct-matching hypothesis, however several recent studies have demonstrated that context and individual differences may be influencing factors on RFRs. At the present, it is unclear to what extent RFRs can be modulated. In the present study, we propose to determine the effects of facial stimuli versus non-facial stimuli on RFRs through measuring the EMG response of participants with trait sadism. The participants observed dynamic facial expressions as …

The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) was a professional North American hockey league that operated from 1911 to 1924. With markets in Victoria, Vancouver, New Westminster, Seattle, and Portland, the bourgeoning league was a viable competitor to the NHA and offered a distinctive approach to the developing sport. Through innovations and rule changes, the PCHA made significant strides in player safety, in line with the vision of “clean” hockey promoted by the league’s founders, Frank and Lester Patrick. In turn, these innovations were represented through newspaper accounts from the period, which helped promote a modern, scientific, and highly-marketable brand of …
Impact Of Dyrk1a Haploinsufficiency On Facial Morphology Using Three-Dimensional Morphometric Analysis, Stefani Hammond
Impact Of Dyrk1a Haploinsufficiency On Facial Morphology Using Three-Dimensional Morphometric Analysis, Stefani Hammond
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Dual-specificity tyrosine-(Y)-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) is a gene present on human chromosome 21. Previous research suggests that this gene plays a developmental role in facial morphology. We hypothesize that individuals with DYRK1A haploinsufficiency have altered facial morphology with potentially unique patterns of facial variation. To assess this hypothesis, we acquired three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetric facial images of individuals with and without DYRK1A haploinsufficiency, and we measured anatomical landmarks to carry out Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) and to evaluate global and local morphological differences. Our results show unique patterns of variation between individuals with DYRK1A haploinsufficiency and normal siblings, as …
An Ontological Critique Of The Self: The Daoist ‘Non-Self’ At The Heart Of Jung’S Analytical Theory, Camilo Andrés Hoyos Lozano
An Ontological Critique Of The Self: The Daoist ‘Non-Self’ At The Heart Of Jung’S Analytical Theory, Camilo Andrés Hoyos Lozano
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This research attempts to formulate a critique of the Jungian self from the Daoist, Lao-Zhuang notion of non-self. In post-modern societies an ontological critique of the self is also ideological, for the self is an indispensable device of neoliberal government. Because for Jung the self is an essential and autonomous reality, he advances a dualism that not only legitimizes the current economic and political order, but—focal to this analysis—also complicates the ‘realization’ of the ultimate spiritual ‘goal,’ and his own purpose of treating psychological suffering. Thus, the critical power and political potential of the Daoist non-self serves to demystify analytical …

Facilitating Experiential Learning Experiences Through A Class Pioneer Day, Ronald Vaughan Morris
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Students experience a reenactment of life on the frontier created by the interaction of their teachers and community volunteers. Students in elementary social studies learn content, skills, values, and dispositions through engaging in experiential learning. The classroom environment is described through a case study of one classroom of fourth grade students with an experienced teacher with deep roots in the community. Teachers develop skills in negotiation with volunteers to accomplish tasks that support student learning. Descriptions of student and teacher preparations in addition to budgetary constraints describe how to replicate the experience. Examples and assessments are provided as well as …

Researching The U.S. Role In Foreign Politics With The Bricker Amendement, Jeremiah Clabough
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The United States has always been conflicted about its role in international affairs. There are many historical examples where these divergent beliefs can be examined. One ideal topic students can research to analyze Americans’ conflicting beliefs about the country’s role in international affairs is the Bricker Amendment. In this article, I explore how activities about the Bricker Amendment allow high school students to examine different perspectives about the U.S. role in international affairs. The steps and resources needed to implement the activity in my article are provided.

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This paper provides a framework for understanding the economic effects of automation and artificial intelligence (AI). First, it reviews how physical capital interacts with labor in the context of automation and AI. Next, it discusses recent advances in AI and potential economic outcomes such as job market polarization and income inequality. It then describes the role education has played in previous economic transitions and the role it will likely play as technology advances. Finally, the paper identifies key economic concepts and teaching resources that social studies educators can integrate into their instruction to help students understand the economic effects of …
Developing Social Justice Skills Through Community Service-Learning In High School Social Studies, Sharehann T. Lucman
Developing Social Justice Skills Through Community Service-Learning In High School Social Studies, Sharehann T. Lucman
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Social studies teachers are presented with the challenging yet rewarding task of cultivating in their students' principles and competencies essential for democratic and social-justice-oriented citizenship. Inspired and guided by literature on social justice education and community service-learning, this study suggests that social studies teachers ought to consider integrating teaching methods that are experiential, participatory, and critical in nature. An example of such a method is community service-learning. As illustrated in this study, community service-learning activities afford students the unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills on social justice in authentic social situations.

Making Sense Of Multipolarity: Emerging Powers And Comparative Area Studies, Nora Fisher-Onar
Making Sense Of Multipolarity: Emerging Powers And Comparative Area Studies, Nora Fisher-Onar
International Studies Faculty Publications
As the West retrenches and new powers emerge, students of international relations are well positioned to address an outstanding question: How to thrive in a multipolar world? The question—and the answers which we bring to bear—resonate beyond geopolitics. This is because the task of living together in diversity is arguably the greatest analytical as well as normative challenge facing world politics more broadly (Fisher-Onar, Pearce, and Keyman 2018).

Moderators Of Academic Performance And Symptom Severity In Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Ryan Nicole Cummins
Moderators Of Academic Performance And Symptom Severity In Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Ryan Nicole Cummins
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Research has documented the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom severity and poor academic outcomes. However, few studies have focused on identifying moderating variables of academic performance specific to adolescents, especially those with ADHD. The current study seeks to address these limitations, further exploring moderators of academic outcomes in a clinical sample of adolescents with ADHD. Specifically, the present study examined adolescent ratings of routines, parent-adolescent conflict, perceptions of parental involvement, and school engagement, on the relationship between ADHD symptom severity and academic performance (GPA). The sample consisted of a total of 140 caregiver-adolescent dyads ranging from ages 11- to …

Stress, Social Problem Solving, And Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Cross-Lagged Panel Design Investigation Of Interactive Influences, Natalie M. Roy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study examined the interplay of three key variables: stress, maladaptive social problem-solving (SPS), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptom severity. According to SPS theory, SPS is the self-directed cognitive and behavioral process by which individuals attempt to manage real-life problems or stressful situations. There are two main types of SPS: adaptive or maladaptive (D’Zurilla & Chang, 1995). Individuals who have adaptive SPS tendencies tend to view problems in an optimistic light; they perceive problems as solvable challenges and opportunities for personal growth. On the other hand, individuals who have maladaptive SPS tendencies often see problems as threatening and …
The Influence Of Message Type, Environmental Attitude, And Political Ideology On Perceptions Of Aquaculture In The United States, Tabitha C. Boze
The Influence Of Message Type, Environmental Attitude, And Political Ideology On Perceptions Of Aquaculture In The United States, Tabitha C. Boze
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, aquaculture receives varying degrees of support based on individuals’ perceptions of the industry. This study analyzes the factors that contribute to those perceptions; namely, message type, affect, political orientation, and environmental attitude. We collected data through a nationwide survey, distributed by Qualtrics, which recruited a representative sample of U.S. residents. The survey included multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions regarding individual characteristics (e.g., age, income, political orientation, etc.) and opinions on aquaculture. In order to study message type, we employed four experimental conditions (narrative video, narrative text, infographic video, and text) and one control group with …

Practical and ethical constraints limit our ability to experimentally test socioecological theory in wild primates. We took an alternate approach to model this, allowing groups of humans to interact in a virtual world in which they had to find food and interact with both ingroup and outgroup avatars to earn rewards. We altered ratios and distributions of high- and low-value foods to test the hypothesis that hominoids vary with regards to social cohesion and intergroup tolerance due to their feeding ecology. We found larger nesting clusters and decreased attacks on outgroup competitors in the Bonobo condition versus the Chimpanzee condition, …

The Relationship Between Non-Suicidal Self-Injury And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Emotion Reactivity And Negative Problem Orientation, Victoria Quiñones
The Relationship Between Non-Suicidal Self-Injury And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Emotion Reactivity And Negative Problem Orientation, Victoria Quiñones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) precedes and increases risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, but the reasons for this are not understood (Hamza et al., 2012). The trajectory from NSSI to suicidal thoughts and behaviors likely reflects a complex interaction of emotional, cognitive, and physiological factors. Indeed, research indicates that the way individuals react to emotional experiences (i.e., emotion reactivity) and approach problem solving confers risk for NSSI and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The current study proposed an integrated model to test whether emotion reactivity (self-report and electrodermal activity) mediates the relationship between NSSI history and suicidal ideation (SI), …
