Exploring Cultural Awareness: Whiteness, Inclusive Science Initiative Program
Exploring Cultural Awareness: Whiteness, Inclusive Science Initiative Program
Inclusive Science Initiative Program
What does it mean to be white? Whiteness, as with all other races, is a social construct. There is nothing that inherently identifies a person as white, yet when we use the word, we have a certain collective understanding of what it means. Whiteness has generally been associated with people of European origin but has not always collectively represented all Europeans. There are other ethnic groups with light-colored skin who are labeled white in some context but not others. So, what makes a person white and what does this mean in our society?

Powerful Men: An Evaluation Of Successful Rhetoric, Rachel Hollenbeck
Powerful Men: An Evaluation Of Successful Rhetoric, Rachel Hollenbeck
Undergraduate Research Journal
This study examines the rhetoric of Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill and why it was so successful. Both men are famous for their rhetoric, but this study is a more in-depth look at how they spoke well and influenced people. Through the lens of Lloyd F. Bitzer’s “The Rhetorical Situation” and the classical rhetorical appeals, multiple details of Hitler and Churchill’s speeches are brought to attention and analyzed, especially how their responses fit the situations they were facing, how they connected with their audiences, and how their wording matched the goals they were trying to achieve. One of the purposes …

Age-Specific Posting: Tailoring Social Media Post To Audience Age, Owen Bridges
Undergraduate Research Journal
With social media becoming the best way to get the word out about something, advertisers have been trying to break the code on how to market their products successfully. The hard part about social media marketing is figuring out what the target audience is for said product. In this study, women’s fashion brands are examined to see if big companies are taking advantage of age targeting through their social media posts. After doing some research, a study like this couldn’t be found. The hypothesis for this study was that each brand would tailor all of their posts towards different social …

The Aids Virus And The Galvanization Of The Lgbtq Movement For Equality, Michael Ernest Wachowski
The Aids Virus And The Galvanization Of The Lgbtq Movement For Equality, Michael Ernest Wachowski
Graduate Theses
The LGBTQ community was greatly altered by the AIDS crisis and the organizations that were founded in the 1980s. AIDS would become associated with those of the gay community during the early years of the crisis. The government and leading health officials perpetuated the public’s ignorance about the relativity new disease leading to more misunderstandings and mishandlings of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The disease did not discriminate among people, however, and quickly spread throughout many of the communities in the U.S. Organizations with roots in the LGBTQ community established themselves during the 1980s to deal with not only the AIDS crisis, …

Marginalized Youth, Mental Health, And Connection With Others: A Review Of The Literature, Beth Sapiro, Alison Ward
Marginalized Youth, Mental Health, And Connection With Others: A Review Of The Literature, Beth Sapiro, Alison Ward
Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
For marginalized youth, the transition to adulthood is a stage of life in which inequalities can be either magnified or reduced. While most descriptions of these young people highlight their difficulties achieving self-sufficiency, the ability to form connections with others is an equally significant marker of adult maturity. Given that social isolation poses serious risks to health and well-being, the relational experiences of marginalized youth are a critical component of the transition to adulthood. Experiences of trauma, marginalization, and involvement in public systems of care can place these youth at heightened risk for mental health difficulties, all of which can …

Barriers Inhibiting Detection And Management Of Postpartum Hemorrhage By Providers In Madagascar, Breakthrough Research, Usaid's Health Evaluation And Applied Research Development
Reproductive Health
Breakthrough RESEARCH partner ideas42 conducted research in June 2019 in peri-urban and rural areas of Vohipeno and Manakara districts of Madagascar's Vatovavy-Fitovinany region to identify health care providers' challenges for detecting and managing complications during childbirth including postpartum hemorrhage and identify optimal solutions. This brief summarizes the results of a behavioral diagnosis that reveals “Facility-based providers do not consistently follow best practices for the detection and management of complications during childbirth.” Low perception of risk of postpartum hemorrhage, limited review of compliance with best practices, consequences of current practices, and resource scarcity can negatively affect provider decision-making and clinical practice.
A Unique Type Of Loneliness: Infertility In Nineteenth-Century America, Abigail Butler
A Unique Type Of Loneliness: Infertility In Nineteenth-Century America, Abigail Butler
Theses and Dissertations from 2020
Many diaries and letters written by nineteenth-century Americans display the aching for parenthood and pain of loss due to miscarriage. Though some women felt joy or relief when they recognized they had miscarried or were not pregnant, infertility negatively affected the everyday lives of many men and women in the nineteenth century. Infertility not only disturbed their personal beliefs of family and their role in society, but could cause marital discord, feeling outcast from society, and could lead to other health problems. Women in slavery faced even more serious consequences that included being sold away from their family and/or receiving …
Image, Industry, And Ink: Communication Of Tattoo Policies By Human Resource Professionals, Sabrina A. Fuller
Image, Industry, And Ink: Communication Of Tattoo Policies By Human Resource Professionals, Sabrina A. Fuller
Theses and Dissertations
Despite growing popularity, tattoos have historically been taboo in workplace environments. Those with unconcealable tattoos, especially white-collar workers and women, suffer from a perceived lack of professionalism (Dean, 2010; Hawkes, Senn, & Thorn, 2004). Tattooed individuals often struggle between individual desires and the impression expected in work environments. Meanwhile organizations strike a balance between communicating the organization’s values and employee expression of personal values. This study qualitatively investigates how values and tattoo policies are communicated in organizations, and whether value dissonance influences those communication process. Using a modified version of the Schwartz Value Survey (2006) and semi-structured interviews, the values …
The Effects Of Long-Term Memory Prioritization On Attention During Visual Search, Joshua Hoelter
The Effects Of Long-Term Memory Prioritization On Attention During Visual Search, Joshua Hoelter
Theses and Dissertations
Attention has traditionally been divided into a dichotomy, however mounting evidence suggests a third attention process is at work, one that shows attention capture because of previous experiences with a stimulus, not its physical properties. In line with this, items that have been paired with a rewarding or aversive outcome, items held in working memory, and items incidentally retrieved from long term memory have all been shown to capture attention in an obligatory fashion similar to bottom-up attentional processes. More recent work into how items in working memory capture attention, has demonstrated that items can attain a special status that …
Medical Provider Reactions To An Adolescent Chronic Pain Complaint And A Dismissive Interaction, Eva Igler
Medical Provider Reactions To An Adolescent Chronic Pain Complaint And A Dismissive Interaction, Eva Igler
Theses and Dissertations
Childhood chronic pain impacts approximately 15-33% of children and adolescents and can significantly impact physical and psychosocial functioning. Children and adolescents with chronic pain have a decreased ability to participant in normal childhood activities and are more likely to have sleep difficulties, anxiety and depressive symptoms, and sedentary behavior. The etiology underlying chronic pain can be particularly difficult to diagnose because often, it does not have a clear physiological etiology and assessment relies almost solely on patient report. This often leads to under-treatment of pain and can lead to pain dismissal, particularly by medical providers. The literature regarding diagnosis and …

by
María E. Sotomayor
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2020
Under the Supervision of Professor Merry Wiesner-Hanks
Since the middle of the twentieth century, Puerto Rico has had the highest, or nearly the highest, rate of sterilization in the world. The reasons for this have been examined from many perspectives, but how this has affected Puerto Rican women has rarely been discussed nor have their voices been heard. This study focuses on the long-term effects of female sterilization on Puerto Rican women, and their perception about their options for contraceptive …

Stability And Predictive Value Of Intellectual Functioning In Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Beginning In The Preschool Years, Gregor Nathanael Pau Schwarz
Theses and Dissertations
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple aspects of cognitive functioning, including intellectual functioning, attention, and executive functioning. The predictive value of intellectual functioning (IF) in the preschool years for IF in the school- age and early adolescent years has not been examined in youth with NF1. In this study, the reliability and predictive value of preschool IF for school-age IF were examined using both bivariate correlation and more complex linear mixed models. The participants were 55 youth with NF1 from ages 3 to 13 years. Intellectual functioning was measured with the Differential Ability Scales …

Post-Secondary Employment And Education Outcomes Of Young Adults Reporting Both Vision And Hearing Impairments In The High School Longitudinal Study Of 2009, Emily M. Lund
JADARA
This article reports the post-secondary education and work activities of 43 young adults who reported a history of both hearing and vision disabilities (i.e., deafblindness [DB] in Wave 4 of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Most of the sample reported having worked, attended post-secondary education, or both since completing secondary education. Approximately half of the sample still lived with their parents, and most reported receiving financial support from their parents. Thus, although engagement in work and education was relatively high, most participants had not achieved financial independence.

Application Of Self-Efficacy Training In Group Aural Rehabilitation: An Interprofessional Collaborative Model, Stephen D. Roberts, Nancy A. Delich
JADARA
Few studies have explored self-efficacy training with persons with hearing loss (PHLs), yet alone with their communication partners (CPs). The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine the impact of self-efficacy training as a framework for an Interprofessional Psychosocial Group Aural Rehabilitation (IPGAR) workshop with PHLs and their CPs. Four PHLs and their four CPs consented to participate in the IPGAR workshop that employed interventions including short lectures, psychosocial exercises, communication strategies training, speech perception training, adaptive/stress reduction exercises, and group discussions relevant to mutually established shared goals for each couple. The participants reported improved communication abilities in the …
Intergenerational Continuity Of Abuse: The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse History In Adolescent Mothers And Children’S Experiences Of Maltreatment, Karli Kolsut
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
Introduction: Previous research has identified maternal history of child abuse as a predictor of their child’s experiences, otherwise known as an intergenerational continuity of abuse (ICA). Adolescent mothers have been identified as having a higher prevalence of childhood sexual, emotional, and physical abuse histories, placing their children at high risk. A prior study with the current sample found that 66% of adolescent mothers had been a victim of childhood sexual, physical, or emotional abuse and of these, 78.1% of their children reported having a history of abuse at age 18. Method: Utilizing data from the 18-year-long Notre Dame Adolescent Parenting …

Need For Diversity In Elected Decision-Making Bodies: Economics-Related Analysis, Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
On a qualitative level, everyone understands the need to have diversity in elected decision-making bodies, so that the viewpoint of each group be properly taken into account. However, when only the usual economic criteria are used in this election -- e.g., in the election of company's board -- the resulting bodies often under-represent some groups (e.g., women). A frequent way to remedy this situation is to artificially enforce diversity instead of strictly following purely economic criteria. In this paper, we show the current seeming contradiction between economics and diversity is caused by the imperfection of the use economic models: in …
